RESUMO

Here, we prepared ionically crosslinked films using pectin extracted from agro-wastes, specifically ambarella peels (AFP) and jackfruit seed slimy sheath (JFS). Physiochemical properties of pectins, including moisture content, molecular weight (Mw), degree of esterification (DE), and galacturonic acid (GA), were analyzed. Optimal extraction was determined, i.e., citric acid concentration 0.3 M, time 60 min, solid/liquid ratio 1:25, and temperature 90 °C for AFP or 85 °C for JFS. Pectin yields under these conditions were 29.67 % ± 0.35 % and 29.93 ± 0.49 %, respectively. AFP pectin revealed Mw, DE, and GA values of 533.20 kDa, 67.08 % ± 0.68 %, and 75.39 ± 0.82 %, while JFS pectin exhibited values of 859.94 kDa, 63.04 % ± 0.47 %, and 78.63 % ± 0.71 %, respectively. The pectin films crosslinked with Ca2+, Cu2+, Fe3+, or Zn2+ exhibited enhanced tensile strength and Young's modulus, along with reduced elongation at break, moisture content, water solubility, water vapor permeability, and oxygen permeability. Structural analyses indicated metal ions were effectively crosslinked with carboxyl groups of pectin. Notably, the Cu2+-crosslinked film demonstrated superior water resistance, mechanical properties, and exhibited the highest antioxidant and antibacterial activities among all tested films. Therefore, the pectin films represent a promising avenue to produce eco-friendly food packaging materials with excellent properties.

RESUMO

In the process of solving the Traveling Salesman Problem (TSP), both Ant Colony Optimization and simulated annealing exhibit different limitations depending on the dataset. This article aims to address these limitations by improving and combining these two algorithms using the clustering method. The problems tackled include Ant Colony Optimization's susceptibility to stagnation, slow convergence, excessive computations, and local optima, as well as simulated annealing's slow convergence and limited local search capability. By conducting tests on various TSPLIB datasets, the algorithm proposed in this article demonstrates improved convergence speed and solution quality compared to traditional algorithms. Furthermore, it exhibits certain advantages over other existing improved algorithms. Finally, this article applies this algorithm to logistics transportation, yielding excellent results.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Fibrosis is a key determinant of clinical outcomes in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but time-dependent risk of mortality has not been reported in previous meta-analyses. We performed an updated time-to-event meta-analysis to provide robust estimates for all-cause and liver-related mortality in biopsy-confirmed NAFLD with comparisons between fibrosis stages. METHODS: Medline and Embase databases were searched to include cohort studies reporting survival outcomes by fibrosis stage in biopsy-proven NAFLD. Survival estimates were pooled using reconstructed individual participant data. Conventional meta-analysis was conducted to pool adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) using DerSimonian and Laird random effects model. RESULTS: A total of 14 articles involving 17,301 patients with NAFLD were included. All-cause mortality at 1, 5, and 10 years for stage 0 to 2 fibrosis was 0.1%, 3.3%, and 7.7% vs 0.3%, 20.6%, and 41.5% for stage 4 fibrosis. Compared with stage 0 fibrosis, all-cause mortality increased with fibrosis stage: stage 2; HR, 1.46 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08-1.98), stage 3; HR, 1.96 (95% CI, 1.41-2.72), and stage 4; HR, 3.66 (95% CI, 2.65-5.05). Risk for liver-related mortality increased exponentially as fibrosis stage increased: stage 2; HR, 4.07 (95% CI, 1.44-11.5), stage 3; HR, 7.59 (95% CI, 2.80-20.5), and stage 4; HR, 15.1 (95% CI, 5.27-43.4). Stage 3 to 4 fibrosis had a higher all-cause (HR, 3.32) and liver-related mortality (HR, 10.40) compared with stage 0 to 2 fibrosis, whereas stage 4 fibrosis had higher all-cause (HR, 2.67; 95% CI, 1.47-4.83) and liver-related mortality (HR, 2.57; 95% CI, 1.22-5.42) vs stage 3 fibrosis. CONCLUSIONS: Risk of all-cause and liver-related mortality increases substantially with fibrosis stage. These data have important implications for prognostication and trial design.

RESUMO

The theory of membrane anatomy has been widely used in the field of colorectal surgery. The key point to perform high quality total mesorectal excision (TME) and complete mesocolic excision (CME) is to identify the correct anatomical plane. Intraoperative identification of the various fasciae and fascial spaces is the key to accessing the correct surgical plane and surgical success. The landmark vessels refer to the small vessels that originate from the original peritoneum on the surface of the abdominal viscera during embryonic development and are produced by the fusion of the fascial space. From the point of view of embryonic development, the abdominopelvic fascial structure is a continuous unit, and the landmark vessels on its surface do not change morphologically with the fusion of fasciae and have a specific pattern. Drawing on previous literature and clinical surgical observations, we believe that tiny vessels could be used to identify various fused fasciae and anatomical planes. This is a specific example of membrane anatomical surgery.

RESUMO

Objective: To investigate the pathological changes of placenta in pregnant women with aortic dissection/aneurysm and their relationship with clinical features. Methods: The placental samples of 14 pregnant women with aortic dissection/aneurysm diagnosed from January 2012 to October 2021 and 10 normal placental samples of pregnant women from January 2021 to December 2021 at Beijing Anzhen Hospital Affiliated to Capital Medical University, Beijing, China were selected. Routine H&E staining and immunohistochemistry were used to analyze the histological features under light microscope. The clinical data were also analyzed. Results: The age of 14 pregnant patients with aortic dissection/aneurysm for placental examination ranged from 22 to 38 years (median, 28 years). The gestational ages ranged from 22 to 39 weeks (median, 34 weeks). The pregnancy of second trimester was noted in 2 cases, and the third trimester in 12 cases. All cases were singleton pregnancy. Seven cases were Stanford type A aortic dissection, 6 cases were Stanford type B aortic dissection, and one case was aortic root aneurysm. Four of the pregnant women underwent aortic dissection surgery after caesarean section, three underwent caesarean section after aortic dissection surgery, and seven underwent both caesarean section and aortic dissection procedures. Among the newborns, 2 cases were full-term birth, and 12 cases were premature birth. Twelve cases had alive newborns, and 2 cases stillbirths. Fetal/placental weight ratio (FPR)<10th percentile was in 5 cases and FPR>90th percentile in one case. Compared with the normal group, accelerated villus maturation and distal villus dysplasia were more frequently found in pregnancy with aortic dissection group (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in villi infarction and decidua vascular lesions between the two groups (P>0.05), nor was there correlation between the type of aortic dissection and distal villus dysplasia and accelerated villus maturation of placentas (P>0.05). The number of villous interstitial blood vessels in the placentas of pregnancy with aortic dissection group was significantly fewer than that in the normal control group (P<0.01). Conclusions: There are considerable pathological changes in the placentas of pregnant women with aortic dissection/aneurysm. The main histological features are accelerated villus maturation and distal villus dysplasia, which are manifestations of villous ischemia and hypoxia, and also a part of the placental pathological manifestations of maternal vascular dysperfusion.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION@#Musculoskeletal injuries are the most common reason for surgical intervention in polytrauma patients.@*METHODS@#This is a retrospective cohort study of 560 polytrauma patients (injury severity score [ISS] >17) who suffered musculoskeletal injuries (ISS >2) from 2011 to 2015 in National University Hospital, Singapore.@*RESULTS@#560 patients (444 [79.3%] male and 116 [20.7%] female) were identified. The mean age was 44 (range 3-90) years, with 45.4% aged 21-40 years. 39.3% of the patients were foreign migrant workers. Motorcyclists were involved in 63% of road traffic accidents. The mean length of hospital stay was 18.8 (range 0-273) days and the mean duration of intensive care unit (ICU) stay was 5.7 (range 0-253) days. Patient mortality rate was 19.8%. A Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score <12 and need for blood transfusion were predictive of patient mortality (p < 0.05); lower limb injuries, road traffic accidents, GCS score <8 and need for transfusion were predictive of extended hospital stay (p < 0.05); and reduced GCS score, need for blood transfusion and upper limb musculoskeletal injuries were predictive of extended ICU stay. Inpatient costs were significantly higher for foreign workers and greatly exceeded the minimum insurance coverage currently required.@*CONCLUSION@#Musculoskeletal injuries in polytrauma remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, and occur predominantly in economically productive male patients injured in road traffic accidents and falls from height. Increasing insurance coverage for foreign workers in high-risk jobs should be evaluated.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Shunxin decoction improves diastolic function in rats with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) by regulating the cyclic guanosine monophosphate-dependent protein kinase (cGMP-PKG) signaling pathway. METHODS: Except for control group 8 and sham surgery group 8, the remaining 32 male Sprague-Dawlay rats were developed into HFpEF rat models using the abdominal aorta constriction method. These rats in the HFpEF model were randomly divided into the model group, the Shunxin high-dose group, the Shunxin low-dose group, and the Qiliqiangxin capsule group. The three groups received high-dose Shunxin decoction, low-dose Shunxin decoction, and Qiliqiangxin capsule by gavage, respectively, for 14 d. After the intervention, the diastolic function of each rat was evaluated by testing E/A, heart index, hematoxylin-eosin staining, Masson, myocardial ultrastructure, and N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP). The Bioinformatics Analysis Tool for Molecular Mechanism of Traditional Chinese Medicine (BATMAN-TCM) software was used to predict targets for which Shunxin decoction acts on the cGMP-PKG pathway. Natriuretic peptide receptor A (NPRA) and guanylate cyclase (GC) were detected by immunohistochemistry, and eNOS, phosphodiesterase 5A (PDE5A), and cGMP-dependent protein kinase 1(PKG I) were determined by Western blotting. RESULTS: Compared to the model group, the thickness of the interventricular septum at the end of diastole (IVSd) and the thickness of the posterior wall at the end of diastole (PWd) of the Shunxin decoction high-dose group, Shunxin decoction low-dose group, and Qiliqiangxin capsule group were all significantly reduced ( < 0.01). Furthermore, Shunxin decoction high-dose group E/A value was decreased ( < 0.01). Compared to the model group, the expression of NPRA and GC increased in the Shunxin decoction low-dose group and the Qiliqiangxin capsule group ( < 0.01). Compared to the model group, the expressions of eNOS and PKG I increased ( < 0.05) in the Shunxin decoction high-dose group. The expression of PDE5A expression decreased in the myocardium of the Shunxin decoction high-dose group, Shunxin decoction low-dose group, and Qiliqiangxin capsule group compared to the model group ( < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Shunxin decoction can improve diastolic function in rats with HFpEF. It increases the expression of NPRA, GC, and eNOS in the myocardial cell cGMP-PKG signaling pathway, upregulates cGMP expression, decreases PDE5A expression to reduce the cGMP degradation. Thus, the cGMP continually stimulates PKG I, reversing myocardial hypertrophy and improving myocardial compliance in HFpEF rats.

RESUMO

Poliovirus (PV) can spread through neural pathway to the central nervous system and replicates in motor neurons, which leads to poliomyelitis. Enterovirus 71 (EV71), which is closely related to PV, is one of the causative agents of hand-foot-and-mouth disease and can cause severe neurological diseases similar to poliomyelitis. Since PV is similar to EV71 in its motor neurotoxicity, we tried to understand if the results obtained with PV are of general applicability to EV71 and other viruses with similar characteristics. Using microfluidic devices, we demonstrated that both PV capsid and the PV genome undergo axonal retrograde transport with human PV receptor (hPVR), and the transported virus replicated in the soma of hPVR-expressing motor neurons. Similar to PV in hPVR-transgenic (Tg) mice, neural pathway ensuring spreading of EV71 has been shown in adult human scavenger receptor class B, member 2 (hSCARB2)-Tg mice. We have validated this finding in microfluidic devices by showing that EV71 is retrogradely transported together with hSCARB2 to the cell body where it replicates in an hSCARB2-dependent manner.

RESUMO

Previous studies have indicated that chronic intermittent hypobaric hypoxia (CIHH) preconditioning can inhibit TNFα and other related inflammatory cytokines and exerts protective effect on intervertebral disc degeneration disease (IDD) in rats; however, the mechanism is still unclear. The present study aimed to explore the repair mechanisms of CIHH on IDD in rats. In the experiment, 48 adult SpragueDawley rats were selected and randomly divided into an experimental group (CIHHIDD), a degenerative group (IDD) and a control group (CON). The CIHHIDD group of rats (n=16) were treated with CIHH (simulated 3000 m altitude, 5 h per day, 28 days; PO2=108.8 mmHg) before disc degeneration surgery. The IDD group of rats (n=16) underwent tailvertebral intervertebral disc surgery to establish a model of intervertebral disc degeneration. The CON group of rats (n=16) did not receive any treatments. After surgery, the disc height index was calculated using Xray analysis of rat tail vertebrae, the degeneration process was observed and repair was evaluated by chemically staining degenerative intervertebral disc tissue slices. The expression levels of basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), TGFß1, Collagen I and Collagen II were measured in the intervertebral disc tissue using western blotting; while the expression levels of bFGF, TGFß1 and hypoxiainducible factor 1α (HIF1α) were measured in rat serum using ELISA. The results demonstrated that: i) The degree of intervertebral disc height degeneration in CIHHIDD rats was significantly lower compared with that in IDD rats (P<0.05); ii) the expression levels of bFGF, TGFß1 and HIF1α were higher in CIHHIDD rat serum compared with those in IDD rat serum (P<0.05); iii) optical microscopy revealed that the degree of disc degeneration was relatively mild in CIHHIDD rats; and iv) the protein expression levels of bFGF, TGFß1 and collagen II were increased in CIHHIDD rat intervertebral disc tissues compared with those of IDD rats, while the overexpression of collagen I protein was inhibited. Overall, after CIHH pretreatment, the expression levels of bFGF and TGFß1 were upregulated, which play notable roles in repairing degenerative intervertebral discs in rats.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Type 2 diabetes mellitus and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are closely related, and antidiabetic medications have been shown to be potential therapeutics in NAFLD. Using a network meta-analysis, we sought to examine the effectiveness of antidiabetic agents for the treatment of NAFLD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. METHODS: Medline and Embase were searched for randomized controlled trials relating to the use of antidiabetic agents, including sodium-glucose transport protein 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ) agonists, biguanides, sulfonylureas and insulin, on NAFLD in patients with diabetes. The p-score was used as a surrogate marker of effectiveness. RESULTS: A total of 14 articles were included in the analysis. PPARγ agonists were ranked as the best treatment in steatosis reduction, resulting in the greatest reduction of steatosis. There was statistical significance between PPARγ agonists [mean difference (MD): -6.02%, confidence interval (CI): -10.37% to -1.67%] and SGLT2 inhibitors (MD: -2.60%, CI: -4.87% to -0.33%) compared with standard of care for steatosis reduction. Compared with PPARγ agonists, SGLT2 inhibitors resulted in a statistical significant reduction in fibrosis (MD: -0.06, CI: -0.10 to -0.02). Body mass index reduction was highest in SGLT2 inhibitors and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists. Additionally, SGLT2 inhibitors were ranked as the best treatment for increasing high-density lipoprotein and reducing low-density lipoprotein. CONCLUSION: Glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists and SGLT2 inhibitors were suitable alternatives for the treatment of NAFLD in those with type 2 diabetes mellitus with a reduction in body mass index, fibrosis, and steatosis. SGLT2 inhibitors also have the added benefit of lipid modulation.

RESUMO

Methods@#We performed a retrospective review of 199 patients with surgically treated thoracolumbar fractures operated between January 2007 and January 2018. The potential risk factors for the development of AEs as well as the development of common complications were evaluated by univariate analysis, and a multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed to identify independent risk factors predictive of the above. @*Results@#The overall rate of AEs was 46.7%; 83 patients (41.7%) had nonsurgical AEs, whereas 24 (12.1%) had surgical adverse events. The most common AEs were urinary tract infections in 43 patients (21.6%), and hospital-acquired pneumonia in 21 patients (10.6%). On multivariate logistic regression, a Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity (TLICS) score of 8–10 (odds ratio [OR], 6.39; 95% confidence interval [CI], 2.33–17.51), the presence of polytrauma (OR, 2.64; 95% CI, 1.17–5.99), and undergoing open surgery (OR, 2.31; 95% CI, 1.09–4.88) were significant risk factors for AEs. The absence of neurological deficit was associated with a lower rate of AEs (OR, 0.47; 95% CI, 0.31–0.70). @*Conclusions@#This study suggests the presence of polytrauma, preoperative American Spinal Injury Association score, and TLICS score are predictive of AEs in patients with surgically treated thoracolumbar fractures. The results might also suggest a role for minimally invasive surgical methods in reducing AEs in these patients.

RESUMO

Background/Aims@#Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with the development of cardiovascular disease. While existing studies have examined cardiac remodeling in NAFLD, there has been less emphasis on the development of carotid atherosclerosis and stroke. We sought to conduct a meta-analysis to quantify the prevalence, risk factors, and degree of risk increment of carotid atherosclerosis and stroke in NAFLD. @*Methods@#Embase and Medline were searched for articles relating to NAFLD, carotid atherosclerosis, and stroke. Proportional data was analysed using a generalized linear mixed model. Pairwise meta-analysis was conducted to obtain odds ratio or weighted mean difference for comparison between patients with and without NAFLD. @*Results@#From pooled analysis of 30 studies involving 7,951 patients with NAFLD, 35.02% (95% confidence interval [CI], 27.36–43.53%) had carotid atherosclerosis with an odds ratio of 3.20 (95% CI, 2.37–4.32; P<0.0001). Pooled analysis of 25,839 patients with NAFLD found the prevalence of stroke to be 5.04% (95% CI, 2.74–9.09%) with an odds ratio of 1.88 (95% CI, 1.23–2.88; P=0.02) compared to non-NAFLD. The degree of steatosis assessed by ultrasonography in NAFLD was closely associated with risk of carotid atherosclerosis and stroke. Older age significantly increased the risk of developing carotid atherosclerosis, but not stroke in NAFLD. @*Conclusions@#This meta-analysis shows that a stepwise increment of steatosis of NAFLD can significantly increase the risk of carotid atherosclerosis and stroke development in NAFLD. Patients more than a third sufferred from carotid atherosclerosis and routine assessment of carotid atherosclerosis is quintessential in NAFLD.

RESUMO

Background/Aims@#Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is closely associated with diabetes. The cumulative impact of both diseases synergistically increases risk of adverse events. However, present population analysis is predominantly conducted with reference to non-NAFLD individuals and has not yet examined the impact of prediabetes. Hence, we sought to conduct a retrospective analysis on the impact of diabetic status in NAFLD patients, referencing non-diabetic NAFLD individuals. @*Methods@#Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 1999–2018 was used. Hepatic steatosis was defined with United States Fatty Liver Index (US-FLI) and FLI at a cut-off of 30 and 60 respectively, in absence of substantial alcohol use. A multivariate generalized linear model was used for risk ratios of binary outcomes while survival analysis was conducted with Cox regression and Fine Gray model for competing risk. @*Results@#Of 32,234 patients, 28.92% were identified to have NAFLD. 36.04%, 38.32% and 25.63% were non-diabetic, prediabetic and diabetic respectively. Diabetic NAFLD significantly increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), stroke, chronic kidney disease, all-cause and CVD mortality compared to non-diabetic NAFLD. However, prediabetic NAFLD only significantly increased the risk of CVD and did not result in a higher risk of mortality. @*Conclusions@#Given the increased risk of adverse outcomes, this study highlights the importance of regular diabetes screening in NAFLD and adoption of prompt lifestyle modifications to reduce disease progression. Facing high cardiovascular burden, prediabetic and diabetic NAFLD individuals can benefit from early cardiovascular referrals to reduce risk of CVD events and mortality.

RESUMO

Aldehyde dehydrogenases (ALDHs) are overexpressed in various types of cancers. One of the ALDH family genes, ALDH1A2, is aberrantly expressed in more than 50% of T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) cases. However, its molecular function and role in T-ALL pathogenesis are largely unknown. ChIP-seq and RNA-seq analyses showed that the oncogenic transcription factor TAL1 and its regulatory partners bind to the intronic regulatory element of the ALDH1A2 gene, directly inducing a T-ALL-specific isoform with enzymatic activity. ALDH1A2 was preferentially expressed in the TAL1-positive T-ALL subgroup. In T-ALL cell lines, depletion of ALDH1A2 inhibited cell viability and induced apoptosis. Interestingly, gene expression and metabolomic profiling revealed that ALDH1A2 supported glycolysis and the TCA cycle, accompanied by NADH production, by affecting multiple metabolic enzymes to promote ATP production. Depletion of ALDH1A2 increased the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS), while ROS levels were reduced by ALDH1A2 overexpression both in vitro and in vivo. Overexpression of ALDH1A2 accelerated tumor onset and increased tumor penetrance in a zebrafish T-ALL model. Taken together, our results indicate that ALDH1A2 protects against intracellular stress and promotes T-ALL cell metabolism and survival. ALDH1A2 overexpression enables leukemic clones to sustain a hyper-proliferative state driven by oncogenes.

RESUMO

Methods@#We conducted a retrospective analysis of 288 patients (246 for final analysis) who underwent MSTS between 2005–2015. Data collected were demographics and peri/postoperative clinical and radiological features. Early and late radiological AsCF were defined as presentation before and after 3 months, respectively. We analyzed patients with AsCF for risk factors and survival duration by performing competing risk regression analyses where AsCF was the event of interest, with SF and death as competing events. @*Results@#We observed AsCF in 41/246 patients (16.7%). The mean time to onset of AsCF after MSTS was 2 months (range, 1–9 months). Median survival of patients with AsCF was 20 and 41 months for early and late failures, respectively. Early AsCF accounted for 80.5% of cases, while late AsCF accounted for 19.5%. The commonest radiologically detectable AsCF mechanism was angular deformity (increase in kyphus) in 29 patients. Increasing age (p<0.02) and primary breast (13/41, 31.7%) (p<0.01) tumors were associated with higher AsCF rates. There was a non-significant trend towards AsCF in patients with a spinal instability neoplastic score ≥7, instrumentation across junctional regions, and construct lengths of 6–9 levels. None of the patients with AsCF underwent revision surgery. @*Conclusions@#AsCF after MSTS is a distinct entity. Most patients with early AsCF did not require intervention. Patients who survived and maintained ambulation for longer periods had late failure. Increasing age and tumors with a better prognosis have a higher likelihood of developing AsCF. RESUMO

Methods@#We conducted a retrospective analysis on 288 patients (246 for final analysis) who underwent MSTS between 2005–2015. Data collected were demographics and peri/postoperative clinical and radiological features. Early and late radiological SF were defined as presentation before and after 3 months from index surgery, respectively. Univariate and multivariate models of competing risk regression analysis were designed to determine the risk factors for SF with death as a competing event. @*Results@#We observed 14 SFs (5.7%) in 246 patients; 10 (4.1%) underwent revision surgery. Median survival was 13.4 months. The mean age was 58.8 years (range, 21–87 years); 48.4% were women. The median time to failure was 5 months (range, 1–60 months). Patients with SF were categorized into three groups: (1) SF when the primary implant was revised (n=5, 35.7%); (2) peri-construct progression of disease requiring extension (n=5, 35.7%); and (3) SFs that did not warrant revision (n=4, 28.5%). Four patients (28.5%) presented with early failure. SF commonly occurred at the implant-bone interface (9/14) and all patients had a spinal instability neoplastic score (SINS) >7. Thirteen patients (92.8%) who developed failure had fixation spanning junctional regions. Multivariate competing risk regression showed that preoperative Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group score was a significant risk factor for implant failure (adjusted sub-hazard ratio, 7.0; 95% confidence interval, 1.63–30.07; p7 and fixations spanning junctional regions were associated with SF. Majority of construct failures occurred at the implant-bone interface.

RESUMO

Methods@#We reviewed the evidence behind telemedicine and described our clinical protocol, patient selection criteria, and workflow for telemedicine. We discussed a simple methodology to convert pre-existing traditional clinic resources into telemedicine tools, along with future challenges. @*Results@#Our methodology was successfully and easily applied in our clinical practice, with a streamlined workflow allowing our spine surgery service to implement telemedicine as a consultation modality in line with the national recommendations of social distancing. @*Conclusions@#Telemedicine was well incorporated into our outpatient practice using the above workflow. We believe that the use of telemedicine via videoconferencing can become part of the new normal and a safe strategy for healthcare systems as both a medical and an economic countermeasure against COVID-19.
