RESUMO
Historical evidence about toothdrawers in England can be supplemented by references to these men in popular contemporary literature. Poetic and dramatic sources from the late medieval period to the close of the 17th century have been examined to this end, with some attempt made to distinguish satire from historical fact.

In the recent exhumation of a predominantly Georgian population at Christ Church, Spitalfields, 12 skulls showed evidence of dental restorations or artificial teeth. These have been described in some detail and the findings discussed in the light of current knowledge about practical dentistry in England up to the year 1852.

The influence of the Huguenots upon the practice of dentistry in England has received so little attention that their contribution has been largely overlooked, even though the competence of one particular family, the Hemets, led to royal appointments for three successive generations. This paper seeks to begin to redress the balance by chronicling some of the activities of this family.

Throughout her life, Elizabeth I encountered problems with her teeth or lack of them. The anecdote involving Bishop Aylmer in 1578, Strype's account of which being rarely, if ever, quoted in full, and Hentzner's description of her two decades later are well-known, but are by no means the only references to her personal dental history. In a number of biographical studies, the saga of her toothache has been treated as no more than an amusing anecdote, but secondary sources show frequent errors, through either patchwork, imaginativeness or omission. This paper seeks to present a more comprehensive picture of Elizabeth's dental history, so primary sources, quoted as fully as possible, have been allowed to speak for themselves. No assessment has been attempted of the effects of the clinical circumstances upon political decisions or indecision.

Mechanisms of fatigue failure in polymers and the aims of fatigue testing have been examined, and factors affecting testing summarized. In the light of available work in several fields, parameters have been suggested for realistic flexural fatigue testing of denture base resins. A testing machine has been developed, with which the changes in properties of acrylic resin after fatigue in different environments can be studied. These changes developed gradually after 10(4) cycles and were related to the development of bulk crazing rather than to thermal effects. The amount of decay in the elastic modulus was not such that the material could have been said to have "failed".

Alternative resins to traditional denture base acrylic need to be assessed for both short- and long-term performance before their potential can be evaluated. Much dental materials testing is carried out on fresh material and a baseline of knowledge about the properties of aged material is incomplete. Studies have been carried out to examine the effects of thermal and environmental fluctuation on dental acrylic, with testing procedures reconsidered so as to resemble service conditions as closely as possible. Thermal cycling proved detrimental to the resin only when superimposed on intermittent partial drying out and resaturation.
