RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of instruments designed for assessing sexual and reproductive health knowledge among adolescents. METHODS: Rapid review using the 2018 version of the COnsensus-based Standards for the selection of health Measurement Instruments (COSMIN) checklist. RESULTS: This review included fourteen studies from 1983-2022, identifying sixteen Patient-Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs), mainly using Likert scales and self-administration. The overall methodological quality was deemed "Inadequate" per COSMIN standards. Although studies often addressed reliability and structural validity, only five covered hypothesis testing. Responsiveness and interpretability were addressed in one study each, while criterion validity was neglected. Among the instruments, the Sexual Health Questionnaire (SHQ) was distinguished for its robustness in several areas including notable construct validity, explaining 68.25% of the variance, high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: 0.90), and reliable test-retest results over 7 weeks, confirmed by Wilcoxon nonparametric test. CONCLUSION: The study underscores the urgent need for standardised, comprehensive development and validation of the PROMs on sexual health in adolescents. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: This review highlights the urgent need for research to refine existing PROMs and develop new ones for assessing adolescent sexual and reproductive health knowledge, aligning with global educational commitments and advancing the field.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The use of nonpharmacological modalities in managing symptoms experienced by patients with cancer is increasingly important in providing holistic care. However, limited studies have reported on integrating nonpharmacological interventions to improve physical and psychological symptoms of women with gynecological cancer. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of a multimodal nursing intervention (MNI) on sleep quality, fatigue, and level of depression among Indonesian women with gynecological cancer. METHODS: The quasi-experimental nonequivalent group design involved 50 patients in 2 groups and used convenience sampling. An experimental group (n = 25) received MNI including progressive muscle relaxation and a counseling session; the control group received routine hospital care (n = 25). Sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), depression levels by the Beck Depression Inventory-II, and fatigue by the Piper Fatigue Scale (PFS). Pretest data were collected after 3 days of hospital admission; posttest data were gathered after the intervention. RESULTS: The PSQI ( P = .000), Beck Depression Inventory-II ( P = .008), and PFS ( P = .000) changed significantly in the intervention group; the PSQI ( P = .000) and PFS ( P = .000) in the control group changed significantly. The PSQI ( P = .00) and PFS ( P = .000) scores differed significantly between the 2 groups before and after the intervention. The effect size of the MNI for difference scores before and after the intervention was medium effect size. CONCLUSIONS: The role of nonpharmacological modalities in managing symptoms experienced by patients with cancer is increasingly important to providing holistic care. IMPLICATION FOR PRACTICE: Gynecology nurses can lead the implementation of MNI to decrease patient fatigue and depression and to increase sleep quality.

RESUMO

Background: Adolescent pregnancies are a global problem occurring in many countries. Adolescent pregnancy is a risk factor for stunting in children. Aim: This study was designed to develop and evaluation of nursing interventions to prevent stunting in children of adolescent mothers. Methods: A mixed-methods explanatory sequential design with two phases approach will be applied. Phase I is a qualitative phenomenology descriptive study that will be used. Participants will be adolescent pregnant women from several community health centers (Puskesmas) and healthcare staff in a community public center (Puskesmas) will be selected by purposive sampling. The study will be conducted at community health centers (Puskesmas) in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. Data will be gathered through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions and analyzed using thematic analysis. Subsequently, an experimental pre-post-test design with a control group will be used to measure the effectiveness of the nursing intervention on preventing stunting among adolescent mothers in the quantitative phase by behavior toward stunting prevention for adolescent pregnancy and the nutritional status of children. Conclusion: This study will provide insight from both adolescent mothers' and healthcare staff's perspectives on stunting prevention including nutrition of adolescent pregnancy and breastfeeding. We will evaluate the effectiveness and acceptability of nursing intervention in preventing stunting. This will contribute to the international literature on the use of healthcare staff at community health services (puskesmas) to achieve linear growth due to prolonged food insecurity and illnesses in childhood.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Premature birth may be associated with infant health problems and frequently requires in-hospital and then at-home specialized care. Studies investigating home-caring experiences of mothers of preterm infants in developing countries are limited. This study was to explore preterm mothers' experiences of caring practices at home 1 month after their infant's discharge from a neonatal unit. DESIGN AND METHOD: A descriptive qualitative study using in-depth interviews with eight purposively sampled mothers who had been discharged home from neonatal unit in one city in Indonesia. All interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using thematic analysis. RESULT: Three main themes emerged: (1) transition to independent motherhood, (2) focus on care of infant after discharge, and (3) barriers and enablers for care. The mothers managed their infant care at home by focusing on feeding and managing infant health problems. They faced on myth and culture as one of the barriers. CONCLUSIONS: Comprehensive discharge education for mothers of preterm infants and their families is required to enhance mothers' caring abilities and overcome barriers is sufficient. Nurses/midwives need to improve care related to the well-being of mothers and their infants in preparation for, and after, discharge from the neonatal unit.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Parental readiness is a requirement for discharge of the high-risk infant from the hospital. Currently, in Indonesia, there are no standard tools to measure parental readiness according to parents' perceptions. This study aimed to undertake cross-cultural adaptation and psychometric validation of the original version (English) of the Readiness for Hospital Discharge Scale (RHDS)-Parent into Bahasa Indonesia. DESIGN AND METHODS: The cross-cultural adaptation was comprised of seven steps: forward translation, forward translation review, blind-back translation, back translation review, pilot testing of the pre-final version with mothers of low birth weight (LBW) infants, expert panel for conceptual and content equivalence, and initial psychometric testing. In the fifth and sixth steps, content validity index was estimated. In the seventh step, exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and internal consistency reliability were conducted. In total, 146 mothers of LBW infants were included in the psychometric testing using convenience sampling. RESULTS: The 22 item Bahasa-RHDS-Parent emerged in a four-factor structure evident from EFA. This version has good reliability with Cronbach alpha values for knowledge and coping ability (0.92), physical-emotional readiness (0.89), pain and power (0.83), expected support (0.80) and 0.90 across the total Bahasa-RHDS-Parent. CONCLUSION: The Bahasa-RHDS-Parent presents good cross-cultural adaptation and initial psychometric properties for assessing parental readiness in parents with LBW infants before hospital discharge. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: This questionnaire can be used by nurses to measure readiness for discharge of parents of low birthweight babies. Further testing is needed with a larger sample and parents of children of other ages and conditions for instrument improvement.
