RESUMO

There is currently no well-accepted standard method for evaluation of developmental toxicity data. This paper presents one approach to the evaluation of developmental toxicity data. We initially identify some pertinent factors that influence the interpretation of animal data and summarize the literature pertaining to these factors. Such factors include the quality and quantity of data and the relationship between maternal and developmental toxicity. We proceed with a discussion of quantitative assessment of data and propose schemes for qualitative and quantitative developmental hazard assessments.

RESUMO

Data from 90 patients with a variety of hematologic malignant neoplasms were studied to determine the relation between changes in serum ferritin concentration and the clinical status of the patients. Patients with Hodgkin's disease, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, multiple myeloma, blastic crisis of chronic myelocytic leukemia, acute myeloblastic leukemia and acute lymphoblastic leukemia were found to have significantly elevated serum ferritin levels. Further study of serum ferritin concentration in certain hematologic malignant neoplasms might provide a valuable insight into the role of serum ferritin determination in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with malignant diseases.

RESUMO

Sixty-two adults with a current diagnosis of significant hypertension and accompanying moderate to severe anxiety were medicated with lorazepam or with placebo for a period of 4 weeks. The patients were assessed by 7 cardiologists under double-blind conditions and the results pooled. Symptoms of anxiety were quantified using a Global Physician Rating, the Hamilton Anxiety Scale and a Patient Self-Rating Scale. The symptoms of anxiety associated with hypertension were significantly relieved by lorazepam in comparison to placebo. Most lorazepam patients were controlled with 3 mg/day; except for 1 patient, side effects were mild and transient.
