RESUMO

We demonstrate simultaneous control of both the phase and amplitude of light using a conjugate gradient minimisation-based hologram calculation technique and a single phase-only spatial light modulator (SLM). A cost function, which incorporates the inner product of the light field with a chosen target field within a defined measure region, is efficiently minimised to create high fidelity patterns in the Fourier plane of the SLM. A fidelity of F = 0.999997 is achieved for a pattern resembling an LG10 mode with a calculated light-usage efficiency of 41.5%. Possible applications of our method in optical trapping and ultracold atoms are presented and we show uncorrected experimental realisation of our patterns with F = 0.97 and 7.8% light efficiency.

RESUMO

This study is a replication of the experiment by Lange, Houran, Harte, and Havens (1996 on contextual variables, in which hallucinations appear to be affected by the environmental context. These contextual variables are influential in the reporting of haunting and poltergeist-like episodes. This study extended the previous study by adding new factors of time of day, climactic conditions, and emotional feelings. These were analyzed for a different sample, looking for further congruency between experiential content and the context. The sample (N=8431 were reports found on the Internet and in one book. The Lange, et al. study was replicated in that contextual variables were identified in 99.2% of the reports, the content of the reports was judged to be consistent with the nature of the contextual variables in 58.8% of the reports, and contextual variables were related to the percipients' state of arousal and the modalities of experience.

RESUMO

To gain insight into the process of development in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), we sought to identify genes that were differentially expressed at gastrulation. A polymerase chain reaction-based differential screening strategy allowed for the isolation of an Atlantic salmon nucleoside diphosphate kinase cDNA (nm23). Structural characterisation showed a high degree of homology with a large number of previously isolated nucleoside diphosphate kinases (NM23s), both prokaryote and eukaryote, though it represents the first teleost nucleoside diphosphate kinase identified. Highest similarities were found with the type 1 and type 2 NM23 isoforms of mammals. Phylogenetic analysis indicates that the duplication event that gave rise to these isoforms occurred after the splitting of tetrapods and fish, suggesting that the salmon NM23 represents a more ancestral isoform. The position of the salmon sequence on the phylogenetic tree indicates that the salmon genome is expected to have at least three copies of genes from the nm23 gene family. Northern blot analysis showed a single transcript of approximately 0.7 kb in both embryonic and adult tissues. Examination of the temporal pattern of expression of salmon nucleoside diphosphate kinase during embryonic development revealed that this gene is first expressed at the time of gastrulation. Nucleoside diphosphate kinases are thought to have a vital role in regulatory processes such as signal transduction, proliferation and differentiation. Taken together, these results suggest that nucleoside diphosphate kinases have an important role to play in early embryogenic development in vertebrates.

RESUMO

This paper describes how the multi-energy sensor array has been refitted to meet the needs of measuring geomagnetic and other types of electromagnetic phenomena in an environment. This portable laptop computer system was designed to measure the interaction of multiple frequencies with the psychological and physiological processes that underlie human exposure to electromagnetic fields across the spectra. New sensors and analytical software have been implemented in the new configuration.

RESUMO

The presence of a haemoglobin protein which does not exhibit a Bohr effect has been found only in fish living in fast flowing waters. We report the cloning of the first non-Bohr effect beta-globin cDNA from an adult Atlantic salmon kidney bank. Nucleotide sequence analysis of this cDNA shows that the predicted beta-globin peptide comprises 147 amino acids with a calculated molecular mass of 15 975 Da and an overall amino acid homology of 40 to 50% to higher vertebrates and 60-90% to fish sequences. This sequence confirms the important amino acid residues which are changed thus causing loss of the Bohr effect [Powers, D.A. and Edmunson, A.B. (1972) Multiple hemoglobins of catostomid fish. J. Biol. Chem. 247, 6686-6693; Brunori, M. (1975) Molecular adaptation to physiological requirements: the hemoglobin system of trout. Curr. Topics Cell. Regul. 9, 1-39]. This loss allows the haemoglobin protein to have a higher oxygen affinity, as it does not release oxygen when the pH of the surrounding environment decreases, which is an important ability for the fish in times of stress.

RESUMO

The content of perceived apparitions, e.g., bereavement hallucinations, cannot be explained entirely in terms of electromagnetically induced neurochemical processes. It was shown that contextual variables influential in hallucinatory and hypnotic states also structured reported haunting experiences. As predicted, high congruency was found between the experiential content and the nature of the contextual variables. Further, the number of contextual variables involved in an experience was related to the type of experience and the state or arousal preceding the experience. Based on these findings we argue that a more complete explanation of haunting experiences should take into account both electromagnetically induced neurochemical processes and factors related to contextual mediation.

RESUMO

Some patients with a congenitally shortened lower limb can be fitted with a total contact socket of one piece construction, dispensing with the need for removable panels or split socket construction. This gives advantages in weight, strength and cosmesis. The technique is described and compared with those conventionally used.
