RESUMO

Coupling qubits to a superconducting resonator provides a mechanism to enable long-distance entangling operations in a quantum computer based on spins in semiconducting materials. Here, we demonstrate a controllable spin-photon coupling based on a longitudinal interaction between a spin qubit and a resonator. We show that coupling a singlet-triplet qubit to a high-impedance superconducting resonator can produce the desired longitudinal coupling when the qubit is driven near the resonator's frequency. We measure the energy splitting of the qubit as a function of the drive amplitude and frequency of a microwave signal applied near the resonator antinode, revealing pronounced effects close to the resonator frequency due to longitudinal coupling. By tuning the amplitude of the drive, we reach a regime with longitudinal coupling exceeding 1 MHz. This mechanism for qubit-resonator coupling represents a stepping stone towards producing high-fidelity two-qubit gates mediated by a superconducting resonator.

RESUMO

Unwanted interaction between a quantum system and its fluctuating environment leads to decoherence and is the primary obstacle to establishing a scalable quantum information processing architecture. Strategies such as environmental and materials engineering, quantum error correction and dynamical decoupling can mitigate decoherence, but generally increase experimental complexity. Here we improve coherence in a qubit using real-time Hamiltonian parameter estimation. Using a rapidly converging Bayesian approach, we precisely measure the splitting in a singlet-triplet spin qubit faster than the surrounding nuclear bath fluctuates. We continuously adjust qubit control parameters based on this information, thereby improving the inhomogenously broadened coherence time (T2*) from tens of nanoseconds to >2 µs. Because the technique demonstrated here is compatible with arbitrary qubit operations, it is a natural complement to quantum error correction and can be used to improve the performance of a wide variety of qubits in both meteorological and quantum information processing applications.

RESUMO

Two level systems that can be reliably controlled and measured hold promise as qubits both for metrology and for quantum information science. Since a fluctuating environment limits the performance of qubits in both capacities, understanding environmental coupling and dynamics is key to improving qubit performance. We show measurements of the level splitting and dephasing due to the voltage noise of a GaAs singlet-triplet qubit during exchange oscillations. Unexpectedly, the voltage fluctuations are non-Markovian even at high frequencies and exhibit a strong temperature dependence. This finding has impacts beyond singlet-triplet qubits since nearly all solid state qubits suffer from some kind of charge noise. The magnitude of the fluctuations allows the qubit to be used as a charge sensor with a sensitivity of 2 × 10(-8)e/sqrt[Hz], 2 orders of magnitude better than a quantum-limited rf single electron transistor. Based on these measurements, we provide recommendations for improving qubit coherence, allowing for higher fidelity operations and improved charge sensitivity.

RESUMO

Quantum computers have the potential to solve certain problems faster than classical computers. To exploit their power, it is necessary to perform interqubit operations and generate entangled states. Spin qubits are a promising candidate for implementing a quantum processor because of their potential for scalability and miniaturization. However, their weak interactions with the environment, which lead to their long coherence times, make interqubit operations challenging. We performed a controlled two-qubit operation between singlet-triplet qubits using a dynamically decoupled sequence that maintains the two-qubit coupling while decoupling each qubit from its fluctuating environment. Using state tomography, we measured the full density matrix of the system and determined the concurrence and the fidelity of the generated state, providing proof of entanglement.

RESUMO

This research investigated the biotransformation of IMPA, the neutralization product of the nerve agent Sarin, by a microbial consortia. As mandated by the Chemical Weapons Convention signed by 132 countries in 1993, all chemical warfare agents are to be destroyed within ten years of ratification. Technologies must be developed to satisfy this commitment. This paper presents data from a biodegradation kinetics study and background information on the biological transformation of IMPA. Microbial transformation of organophosphate nerve agents and organophosphate pesticide intermediates can be incorporated into a treatment process for the fast and efficient destruction of these similar compounds. Sarin (isopropyl methylphosphonofluoridate), also known as GB, is one of several highly neurotoxic chemical warfare agents that have been developed over the past 50 to 60 years. Four mixed cultures were acclimated to the Sarin hydrolysis product, isopropyl methylphosphonic acid (IMPA). Two of these cultures, APG microorganisms and SX microorganisms, used IMPA as the sole phosphorus source. Extended exposure to IMPA improved the cultures' abilities to degrade IMPA to form methylphosphonic acid (MPA) and inorganic phosphate. The presence of free phosphate in the reactor suppressed the degradation of IMPA. IMPA did not inhibit either cultural consortia within the tested concentration range (0 to 1250 mg/L). The numax was 120.9 mg/L/day for the SX microorganisms and 118.3 mg/L/day for the APG microorganisms. Initial IMPA concentrations of 85 to 90 mg/L were degraded to nondetectable levels within 75 h. These results demonstrate the potential for biodegradation to serve as a complementary treatment process for the destruction of stockpiled Sarin.

RESUMO

The microbial degradation of thiodiglycol, the primary hydrolysis product of sulfur mustard, by a pure culture of Alcaligenes xylosoxydans ssp. xylosoxydans (SH91) was accomplished in laboratory scale stirred tank reactors. This is a major component of the overall biodegradation process proposed for the complete mineralization of sulfur mustard. Several configurations were evaluated for degradation efficiency including batch, repeated batch, continuous stirred tank reactor (CSTR), and two-stage series CSTR. The repeated batch reactor provided the highest degradation rate of thiodiglycol. Further, this method degraded thiodiglycol in the liquid broth to below the detection limits (0.03 mM). Both batch and repeated batch experiments were simulated by an unstructured mathematical model. Simulation results were in agreement with the experimental data, particularly at low TDG concentration (around 30 mM). This study demonstrates the degradation of thiodiglycol using bioreactors and, more generally, is an experimental study of bioreactor designs for the degradation of growth-inhibitory substances.

RESUMO

Organophosphorus acid (OPA) anhydrolase enzymes have been found in a wide variety of prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. Interest in these enzymes has been prompted by their ability to catalyze the hydrolysis of toxic organophosphorus cholinesterase-inhibiting compounds, including pesticides and chemical nerve agents. The natural substrates for these enzymes are unknown. The gene (opaA) which encodes an OPA anhydrolase (OPAA-2) was isolated from an Alteromonas sp. strain JD6.5 EcoRI-lambda ZAPII chromosomal library expressed in Escherichia coli and identified by immunodetection with anti-OPAA-2 serum. OPA anhydrolase activity expressed by the immunopositive recombinant clones was demonstrated by using diisopropylfluorophosphate (DFP) as a substrate. A comparison of the recombinant enzyme with native, purified OPAA-2 showed they had the same apparent molecular mass (60 kDa), antigenic properties, and enzyme activity against DFP and the chemical nerve agents sarin, soman, and O-cyclohexyl methylphosphonofluoridate. The gene expressing this activity was found in a 1.74-kb PstI-HindIII fragment of the original 6.1-kb EcoRI DNA insert. The nucleotide sequence of this PstI-HindIII fragment revealed an open reading frame of 1,551 nucleotides, coding for a protein of 517 amino acid residues. Amino acid sequence comparison of OPAA-2 with the protein database showed that OPAA-2 is similar to a 647-amino-acid sequence produced by an open reading frame which appears to be the E. coli pepQ gene. Further comparison of OPAA-2, the E. coli PepQ protein sequence, E. coli aminopeptidase P, and human prolidase showed regions of different degrees of similarity or functionally conserved amino acid substitutions. These findings, along with preliminary data confirming the presence of prolidase activity expressed by OPAA-2, suggest that the OPAA-2 enzyme may, in nature, be used in peptide metabolism.

RESUMO

An environmentally benign method for the mineralization of sulfur mustard has been proposed involving chemical hydrolysis of sulfur mustard to thiodiglycol, and then the biological degradation of thiodiglycol to generate biomass and gaseous carbon dioxide. Alcaligenes xylosoxidans (SH91) was isolated based on its ability to utilize thiodiglycol as a sole carbon source. This article compares different biological reactor designs and experimentally assesses their relative effectiveness in degrading thiodiglycol using pure cultures of SH91. The reactor configurations studied are batch, continuous stirred-tank reactor (CSTR), and CSTR with cell recycle. From the results, it is clear that the CSTR with cell recycle offers superior performance for a given residence time or volume. These pure culture data are necessary for accurate design of a pilot-scale system where mixed cultures will be employed because of a possible incomplete chemical hydrolysis step.

RESUMO

A highly active organophosphorus acid anhydrolase from Alteromonas undina was purified to homogeneity and found to be composed of a single polypeptide chain with a molecular weight of 53,000. With diisopropylfluorophosphate as a substrate, the purified enzyme has a specific activity of approximately 575 mumol/min/mg of protein. The enzyme has optimum activity at pH 8.0 and 55 degrees C and is stimulated by sulfhydryl reducing agents and manganese. It is capable of rapidly hydrolyzing a wide range of nerve agents and several chromogenic phosphinates.

RESUMO

Previously, a G-type nerve agent degrading enzyme activity was found in a halophilic bacterial isolate designated JD6.5. This organism was tentatively identified as an unknown species of the genus Alteromonas. In order to determine whether this type of enzyme activity was common in other species of Alteromonas, a screening program was initiated. A number of Alteromonas species and five halophilic bacterial isolates were cultured and their crude cell extracts screened for hydrolytic activity against several organophosphorus chemical agents and other related compounds. The samples were also screened for cross-reactivity with a monoclonal antibody raised against the purified enzyme from JD6.5 and for hybridization with a DNA probe based on its N-terminal amino acid sequence A wide spectrum of activities and reactivities were seen, suggesting a significant heterogeneity between the functionally similar enzymes that are present in these bacterial species. Enzymes of the type described here have considerable potential for the decontamination and demilitarization of chemical warfare agents.

RESUMO

This paper describes the development of a Programme of Care for elderly people in Northern Ireland. The problems of the elderly were previously identified, and a classification system was designed in key areas which allocated groups of individuals with similar needs to particular services. It was thus possible to quantify the resources required to meet the future needs of elderly people in Northern Ireland. The major implications for the Health and Social Services were then stressed on the basis of certain assumptions. Generally, resources are currently being channelled in the right direction but considerable expansion of resources is necessary in the future especially in community care. In showing one method of planning services for the elderly people and the possible results, this study also offers a methodology to assist the planning process in general.

RESUMO

This paper presents the results of a survey on persons over the age of 65 in Northern Ireland. One of the aims of this research was to identify and measure the needs of the elderly population in order to develop a Programme of Care. It would seem logical that the problems of the elderly tend to increase with age. Since the population is becoming older and given the commitment to community care, this will have serious implications for the National Health and Social Services. The present survey was carried out using a questionnaire to extract details concerning the individuals' mental state, ability for self-care and household duties, mobility, accommodation, social activities, general health, strain imposed on others and current support from the statutory services. The results for each category were then presented for 5 age-groups: 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84 and 85+. Specific problems in relation to home help provision and social facilities such as day care are also discussed.
