RESUMO
The effects of a single 100 mg dose of medroxyprogesterone acetate (MPA) on human sleep were investigated using healthy young male adults. After a baseline night recording, two consecutive MPA nights and the following two withdrawal nights were recorded. The total sleep time was reduced after the 2nd MPA night and the decrease was significant on the 1st withdrawal night. The time of intrasleep awakening increased after the 2nd MPA night. Stage 1 sleep increased significantly on the 2nd MPA and 1st withdrawal nights. Stage 4 sleep decreased and the sleep latency gradually increased after the MPA administration. REM sleep reduced slightly on the 1st withdrawal night. These results indicate that MPA has a mild arousal action on human sleep and that the action may be pronounced a few days after administration of MPA.

Fundamental and clinical studies on imipenem/cilastatin sodium (MK-0787/MK-0791) were carried out and the results obtained were summarized below. The transfer of MK-0787/MK-0791 into female genital organ tissues was found to be satisfactory. The transfer of MK-0787/MK-0791 into umbilical arterial blood, umbilical venous blood and amniotic fluid was relatively good. A dose of 1,000 mg/1,000 mg per day of MK-0787/MK-0791 was given to each of 6 gynecology patients for 5-22 days and satisfactory clinical effect was obtained in 5 patients out of 6 patients. No notable side effects or abnormal laboratory findings were observed except for a moderate in elevation in S-GOT/S-GPT in 1 case.

Clinical effect was studied for aztreonam (AZT) on 2 patients being treated for malignant tumors. One-two grams of AZT was administered b.i.d. by intravenous drip infusion for 6-7 days. In case 1 with pyometra, there were excellent improvements in WBC, CRP and fever pattern. Unfavorable BUN and S-Cr. values were found, but these were considered to be side effects due to cisplatin. These improved finally, and clinical effect was also excellent. Case 2, a urinary tract infection + prophylactic postoperative administration case, was treated in combination with another drug presuming mixed infection and AZT was shown to be effective clinically and overall. No side effects in cases 1 or 2 were considered to be due to AZT.

We performed cytological examinations on 863 of the 969 patients (89.3%). In the final diagnosis, 4 patients had carcinoma in situ (0.5%) and 1 patient had microinvasive carcinoma (0.1%). Therefore, it is important to perform cytological examinations on infertility out-patient s, and conduct routine cytological examinations when infertility treatment is being continued over long periods. The detection rate for the 18 patients who required detailed examination did not differ between primary and secondary infertility, or with the period of infertility or the factor causing infertility. The follow up after conization should be done carefully, and the patient should be encouraged to become pregnant as early as possible. Unlike fertile women, in infertile women, conization should be performed, even in the case of carcinoma in situ, provided: There is a specialist well-experienced in cytology, colposcopy, and histology; the patient and family are fully satisfied with the physician's explanation; the physician can maintain good contact with the patient and family and continue to provide adequate follow up treatment, and the lesion is in the ectocervix, and the whole lesion can be removed by conization without leaving intact foci.
