RESUMO

A 30-year retrospective review of 497 cases of transient synovitis of the hip involving 475 children allowed full characterization of the syndrome. Femoral head measurements of 118 patients at follow-up of 6 months showed no significant dimensional changes. Three cases of Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease (2.5%) were found in follow-up, as well as a case of osteoid osteoma of the femoral neck and two cases of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. Recurrent synovitis with a benign prognosis occurred in 19 patients. In spite of a generally anticipated good prognosis in the vast majority of cases, radiographic assessment at 6 months after the initial episode is recommended.

RESUMO

The spinal nerve injection study (SNIS) is a diagnostic test for the evaluation of sciatica. SNIS consists of selective infiltration of nerve root with local Xylocaine anesthesia. The most common indication is in the postlaminectomy patient with persistent or recurrent sciatica and peridural scarring causing myelograms or CT scans to be difficult to interpret. Of 105 patients with SNIS, 55 subsequently had surgical exploration of the suspected lesion. In patients with a diagnostic or highly suggestive SNIS, an accurate diagnosis was made in 43 (93%); myelograms in the same group had an accuracy of 24%. At follow-up evaluations ranging from 12 to 60 months (average, 20 months), 40 (73%) of the patients were improved by further surgical treatment.

RESUMO

Phase conjugation by degenerate four-wave mixing in the 4-microm region in germanium has been observed for both single-line and multiline radiation. By using single-line output of a DF laser at 3.8 microm, X3 has been measured to be 4 X 10(-1) esu. Phase conjugation of multiline laser output has been achieved with an efficiency of 0.03%, a level that is consistent with the susceptibility found for single-line phase conjugation and the assumption of independent conjugation of each line of the multiline output.
