RESUMO

Similar reactions of 2,6-dipicolinoylbis(N,N-diethylthiourea) (H2L(a)) with: (i) Ni(NO3)2·6H2O, (ii) a mixture of Ni(NO3)2·6H2O and AgNO3, (iii) a mixture of Ni(OAc)2·4H2O and PrCl3·7H2O and (iv) a mixture of Ni(OAc)2·4H2O and BaCl2·2H2O give the binuclear complex [Ni2(L(a))2(MeOH)(H2O)], the polymeric compound [NiAg2(L(a))2]∞, and the heterobimetallic complexes [Ni2Pr(L(a))2(OAc)3] and [Ni2Ba(L(a))3], respectively. The obtained assemblies can be used for the build up of supramolecular polymers by means of weak and medium intermolecular interactions. Two prototype examples of such compounds, which are derived from the trinuclear complexes of the types [MLn(III)(L)2(OAc)3] and [MBa(L)3], are described with the compounds {[CuDy(III)(L(a))2(p-O2C-C6H4-CO2)(MeOH)4]Cl}∞ and [MnBa(MeOH)(L(b))3]∞, H2L(b) = 2,6-dipicolinoylbis(N,N-morpholinoylthiourea).

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to compare an event analysis and a trend analysis for the detection of progression in glaucomatous visual field loss. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Excluding initial fields (Octopus, Haag-Streit AG, Köniz, Switzerland), baseline was defined as the average result of the second and third examinations. Eyes with at least 6 additional fields entered the study. The event analysis used the method of the Collaborative Normal Tension Glaucoma Study, and the trend analysis was based on a point-wise linear regression analysis. RESULTS: Of 251 glaucoma patients, 235 left eyes and 225 right eyes qualified for the study. Using the event analysis, 44 series suggested a progressive damage, while the point-wise regression approach disclosed only 14 progressing series. In 9 eyes, the two approaches were concordant. Among the latter, 1 - 5 additional fields were necessary in 7 series to disclose progression using the trend analysis. In one series, the event analysis showed progression 7 examinations later. CONCLUSIONS: The point-wise linear regression analysis classified fewer cases as progressing than the event analysis and determined progression later.

RESUMO

A survey was conducted to ascertain to what extent dietitians use techniques cited in the literature considered to affect adherence by patients with non-insulin dependent (Type II) diabetes. A survey instrument listing techniques related to changing behavior, the counseling process, and content of teaching was developed and mailed to 500 members of the ADA Diabetes Care and Education Practice Group. Responses were received from 39% of the sample. For a majority of techniques, data analysis showed statistical association between frequency of use, perceived importance, and adequacy of practitioner training. Dietitians regularly used only 40% of the cited techniques related to changing behavior and the counseling process, but they said most of the items were important. Only half of the items related to the content of teaching were rated as important, and dietitians felt prepared to use only 70% of them. Most dietitians did not teach concepts related to glucose utilization, energy metabolism, and the metabolic role of insulin in diabetes. Those findings suggest that dietitians do not regularly use many techniques considered effective in obtaining dietary adherence of patients with diabetes. Since other studies show compliance is directly influenced by skills of the provider, dietitians could improve cost-effective health care by developing further professional expertise in the area of counseling patients with diabetes.
