RESUMO

UNLABELLED: Inphase and out-of-phase magnetic resonance imaging is a robust and fast method which can provide similar vertebral bone marrow fat estimation as (1)H proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy, indicating that this technique is a potentially useful tool in both research and clinical practice. INTRODUCTION: The importance of evaluating bone marrow fat lies in the fact that osteoporosis and obesity, two disorders of body composition, are growing in prevalence. Bone fat mass can be reliably assessed using proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy ((1)H MRS), but this method is technically demanding and needs advanced post-processing unlike inphase and out-of-phase magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which is a robust and fast method. METHODS: We compared vertebral bone marrow fat (BMF) content assessed by inphase and out-of-phase MRI and (1)H MRS using a 1.5-T MRI scanner in mothers (n = 34, aged 49.4 years), fathers (n = 31, aged 53.1 years) and their daughters (n = 40, aged 20.3 years) who participated in the CALEX family study. Signal intensity on the inphase and out-of-phase MRI was analyzed from the same location and size of the single-voxel (1)H MRS measurement. RESULTS: Positive correlations were found between (1)H MRS and inphase and out-of-phase MRI in the axial plane (r = 0.746, p < 0.001) and sagittal plane (r = 0.804, p < 0.001). The mean differences between (1)H MRS and inphase and out-of-phase MRI in the axial and sagittal planes were relatively small, at 4.13 and 2.67 %, and the agreement between techniques was 89.4 and 93.2 %, respectively. Girls had a significantly lower vertebral BMF than mothers and fathers with both methods (for all, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that inphase and out-of-phase MRI can provide similar vertebral BMF estimation as (1)H MRS, indicating that this technique is a potentially useful tool in both research and clinical practice.

RESUMO

Adequate motor skills are essential for children participating in age-related physical activities, and gross motor skills may play an important role for maintaining sufficient level of physical activity (PA) during life course. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between gross motor skills and PA in children when PA was analyzed by both metabolic- and neuromuscular-based methods. Gross motor skills (KTK--Körperkoordinationstest für Kinder and APM inventory--manipulative skill test) of 84 children aged 5-8 years (53 preschoolers, 28 girls; 31 primary schoolers, 18 girls) were measured, and accelerometer-derived PA was analyzed using in parallel metabolic counts and neuromuscular impact methods. The gross motor skills were associated with moderate-to-high neuromuscular impacts, PA of vigorous metabolic intensity, and mean level of PA in primary school girls (0.5 < r < 0.7, P < 0.05), and with high impacts in preschool girls (0.3 < r < 0.5, P < 0.05). In preschool boys, moderate impacts, light-to-vigorous PA, and mean level of PA were associated with gross motor skills (0.4 < r < 0.7, P < 0.05). In conclusion, the result emphasizes an important relationship between gross motor skills and PA stressing both metabolic and neuromuscular systems in children. Furthermore, PA highly stressing neuromuscular system interacts with gross motor proficiency in girls especially.

RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to compare the effect of terbutaline Turbuhaler (0.5 mg qid) with that of albuterol chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) inhaler (0.2 mg qid) in middle-aged and elderly patients with obstructive lung disease. The study was performed as an open cross-over (2 x 2 weeks) and randomized study in 85 patients. A significant increase in PEF was seen after inhalation from both devices (P less than .001). Baseline PEF values before inhalation were higher with Turbuhaler than with the CFC inhaler both in the mornings and in the evenings. Fifty-six percent of the patients preferred terbutaline Turbuhaler and 26% albuterol CFC inhaler (P = .004).

RESUMO

We studied the effect of regular inhalations of low-dose and high-dose fenoterol and low-dose and high-dose combinations of fenoterol and ipratropium bromide in maintenance treatment of 120 adults with moderately severe asthma. We used a double-blind, randomized, parallel group design comparing 12 weeks of treatment with four regimens: fenoterol, 100 micrograms/dose; fenoterol, 200 micrograms/dose; fenoterol, 50 micrograms; and ipratropium, 20 micrograms/dose in a single inhaler (Berodual) and fenoterol, 100 micrograms and ipratropium, 40 micrograms/dose in a single inhaler (Duovent). During the baseline and active treatment period the patients recorded PEFR in the morning and evening, symptoms and use of a rescue inhaler. Changes in twice daily peak expiratory flow rates or asthma symptoms did not show any significant differences among the four treatment regimens during the 12 weeks compared with the baseline period. Use of the rescue inhaler did not differ among the four groups during the active treatment. The patients' assessment of the efficacy of the active treatment favored the low-dose fenoterol and low-dose combination. More side effects were recorded in the high-dose combination group during the first 4 weeks compared with the other groups. We conclude that in maintenance therapy of chronic asthma high doses of fenoterol alone or in combination with ipratropium bromide offer no clinical advantage over low doses. On the contrary, the low-dose fenoterol and the low-dose combination are better accepted and tolerated by the patients.

RESUMO

Maximal oxygen uptake (max VO2) in leg and arm work, succinate dehydrogenase activity (SDH) and percentage of slow twitch fibers (%ST fibers) in M. vastus lateralis (VL), M. gastrocnemius c.l. (GL) and M. deltoideus (D) were studied in 89 athletes practising 11 different sport events. It was found that maximal oxygen uptake correlated positively with %ST fibers and SDH activity in M. VL. The SDH activity and %ST fibers in M. VL correlated also with one another. The results suggest that oxidative capacity of the muscles is not the limiting factor for maximal oxygen uptake. The role of the oxidative capacity of the muscles might be important during submaximal work of long duration and when a relatively small muscle mass is activated (long-distance running). MaxVO2 might be the most important determinant of performance when large muscle mass is activated during maximal work of a duration from several minutes up to 1 h (cross-country skiing).

RESUMO

Significance of the genetic component in determining the interindividual variation observed in skeletal muscle fibre composition and enzyme activities was investigated in 31 pairs of male and female monozygous (MZ) and dizygous (DZ) twins, whose ages ranged in all but one pair (11 years) from 15 to 24 years. Percent distribution of slow twitch muscle fibres and activities of Ca2+ and Ng2+ stimulated ATPases, creatine phosphokinase, myokinase, phosphorylase, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and distribution of its isozyme LDH-1 were all analyzed in biopsy samples taken from the vastus lateralis muscle. The data disclosed that in contrast to DZ twins the MZ twins of both sexes had an essentially identical muscle fibre composition. Calculation of the heritability estimate for this parameter gave the values of 99.5% and 92.8%, respectively for males and females. In contrast to the fibre composition presence of a significant genetic component was not observed in any of the enzyme activities studied. It was concluded that there is a predominant genetic influence on the skeletal muscle fibre composition in man, and thus also on the potential capacity of the muscles to perform work.
