Background: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) has a serious impact on the prognosis of patients with spontaneous intracranial hemorrhage (sICH). However, the use of prophylactic heparin remains controversial. Objectives: This study investigated the safety and timing of prophylactic heparin for VTE in patients with sICH. Design: This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) reporting guidelines. Methods: Two authors systematically searched Web of Science, Cochrane Library, Embase, and PubMed to find all published research before June 2023. The incidence of deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and mortality were set as primary endpoints. Results: This meta-analysis included seven randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and five observational studies involving a total of 4419 sICH patients in the heparin (n = 2808) and control (n = 1183) groups. Among these patients, 205 received early heparin administration, while 223 received late heparin administration. The results suggested that, compared to the control group, patients in the heparin group had a lower incidence of VTE [odds ratio (OR), 0.47; 95% CI, 0.31-0.71; p < 0.001], DVT (OR, 0.53; 95% CI, 0.33-0.85; p = 0.009), pulmonary embolism (OR, 0.31 95% CI, 0.15-0.65; p = 0.002), and mortality (OR, 0.70; 95% CI, 0.54-0.90; p = 0.006), but there were no statistical differences in hematoma enlargement, extracranial hematoma, and major disability (p > 0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in DVT, mortality, hematoma enlargement, and extracranial hemorrhage between the early heparin group (<24-48 h) and the late heparin group (p > 0.05). Conclusion: In patients with sICH, prophylactic use of heparin may be beneficial because it reduces the incidence of VTE and mortality without increasing the risk of additional bleeding. In addition, early prophylactic use of heparin appears to be safe. However, large-scale RCTs are lacking to support this evidence.

There were no significant differences in blood clot in a deep vein, mortality, hematoma enlargement, and extracranial hemorrhage between the early and late heparin groups. What do the findings mean? This study suggests that prophylactic use of heparin may be beneficial in patients with spontaneous bleeding in the brain, and that early prophylactic use of heparin appears to be safe.

BACKGROUND: Absent in melanoma 2 (AIM2) participates in neuroinflammation. Here, the prognostic significance of serum AIM2 was explored in severe traumatic brain injury (sTBI). METHODS: A total of 135 sTBI patients and 80 healthy controls were recruited in this prospective cohort study. Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and AIM2 levels were measured. Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) and Rotterdam computed tomography (CT) classification were recorded as the severity indicators. Prognostic parameters were posttraumatic six-month extended Glasgow outcome scale (GOSE) scores and poor outcome (GOSE scores of 1-4). RESULTS: As opposed to controls, there were significantly elevated serum AIM2 levels after sTBI. Serum AIM2 levels were independently correlated with serum CRP levels, GCS scores, Rotterdam CT scores, GOSE scores and poor outcome. Also, serum AIM2 levels were efficiently predictive of poor outcome under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve. Under the restricted cubic spline, serum AIM2 levels were linearly correlated with risk of poor outcome. Using subgroup analysis, serum AIM2 levels did not significantly interact with other indices, such as age, gender, alcohol drinking, cigarette smoking, etc. Also, combination model, in which serum AIM2, GCS scores and Rotterdam CT scores were merged, was outlined using nomogram and performed well under calibration curve, ROC curve and decision curve. CONCLUSIONS: Raised serum AIM2 levels after sTBI, in intimate correlation with systemic inflammation and trauma severity, are independently discriminative of posttraumatic six-month neurological outcome, substantializing serum AIM2 as an inflammatory prognostic biomarker of sTBI.

Most of microbe cells spend the majority of their times in quiescence due to unfavorable environmental conditions. The study of this dominant state is crucial for understanding the basic cell physiology. Retained recovery ability is a critical property of quiescent cells, which consists of two features: how long the cells can survive (the survivability) and how fast they can recover (the recovery activity). While the survivability has been extensively studied under the background of chronological aging, how the recovery activity depends on the quiescent time and what factors influence its dynamics have not been addressed quantitatively. In this work, we systematically quantified both the survivability and the recovery activity of long-lived quiescent fission yeast cells at the single cell level under various nutrient conditions. It provides the most profound evolutionary dynamics of quiescent cell regeneration ability described to date. We found that the single cell recovery time linearly increased with the starvation time before the survivability significantly declined. This linearity was robust under various nutrient conditions and the recovery speed was predetermined by the initial nutrient condition. Transcriptome profiling further revealed that quiescence states under different nutrient conditions evolve in a common trajectory but with different speed. Our results demonstrated that cellular quiescence has a continuous spectrum of depths and its physiology is greatly influenced by environmental conditions.

In this work, Lewis acids (FeCl3, AlCl3) and bases (Na2CO3, Na2SO3) were incorporated into a neutral deep eutectic solvent (DES, choline chloride/glycerin) to intensify the lignocellulose fractionation. The efficiency of fractionation in terms of the maximum delignification rate (89.7 %) and well-pleasing cellulose saccharification (100 %) could be achieved by the Lewis acid-mediated DES. An in-depth insight of the evolution of lignin structure revealed that Lewis acid-mediated DES could cleave the ß-O-4 linkages efficiently to achieve a high yield lignin fragments. Meanwhile, the lignin fragments with the enhanced amphiphilic properties facilitate the preparation of lignin nanospheres (LNSs) via the self-assembly process. The resultant LNSs extracted by Lewis acid-mediated DES exhibited an excellent thermal stability, and enhanced antibacterial capacity, which were associated with the phenolic OH content. However, the extracted lignin by Lewis base-mediated DES was mainly attributed to the cleavage of lignin-carbohydrate complexes bond, especially the lignin-carbohydrate ester bond, which retained more ether bonds and a relatively complete structure. This study illuminated the different mechanisms of lignin extraction and the structural evolution of lignin from Lewis acid/base-mediated DES, and provided guidance to select suitable fractionation techniques for upgrading the downstream products.

To improve the electrochemical properties of lignocellulose-derived carbon, wheat straw was hydrothermally processed at different temperatures followed by KOH activation for the preparation of porous carbons. Their physical, chemical, and electrochemical properties were analyzed to clarify the effects of hydrothermal processing. The results indicated that high-temperature hydrothermal processing fragmented the wheat straw and increased the heteroatoms content to make the hydrochars more conducive to activation, thereby improving the specific surface area, N-heteroatoms and phenolic hydroxyl groups of activated carbons. A maximum specific surface area of 2034.4 m2 g-1 was achieved by HAC-300 (the activated carbon derived from hydrothermally processed wheat straw at 300 °C) with more N-heteroatoms and phenolic hydroxyl groups. Correspondingly, the excellent electrochemical performance of the three-electrode supercapacitor device assembled by HAC-300 showed a specific capacitance of 286.95 F g-1 at 0.5 A g-1, representing an improvement of 89.5 % over than that of the original wheat straw without hydrothermally processing. Its symmetric supercapacitor also realized a good capacitance retention of 95.8 % after 10,000 cycles at 5 A g-1, suggesting the excellent cycling stability of the porous carbon from the hydrothermally processed wheat straw.

BACKGROUND: Annexin A1 might be neuroprotective and serum annexin A1 concentrations were markedly declined after severe traumatic brain injury. We determine dthe ability of serum annexin A1 to assess severity and predict prognosis after aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). METHODS: We included 157 aSAH patients and 157 healthy subjects. Serum annexin A1 measurements were measured. A poor outcome was designated as Glasgow outcome scale score of 1-3. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was applied to identify predictors of a poor 6-month outcome. RESULTS: Serum annexin A1 concentrations were significantly lower in patients than in controls. Annexin A1 concentrations were strongly correlated with the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons scale (WFNS) score, Hunt-Hess score, Glasgow coma scale score and modified Fisher score. A total of 59 patients (37.6%) experienced a poor outcome. Serum annexin A1, WFNS score and modified Fisher score emerged as the 3 independent predictors for a poor outcome after aSAH. Under ROC curve analysis, serum annexin A1 had a fair accuracy to predict a poor outcome, AUC of serum annexin A1 concentration was equivalent to those of WFNS score and modified Fisher score and AUC of combination of the 3 factors significantly exceeded that of each one alone. CONCLUSIONS: Annexin A1 may be involved in the occurrence and progression of secondary brain injury after aSAH. Detection of serum annexin A1 may have certain ability for assessment of severity and prediction of long-term prognosis following aSAH.

BACKGROUND: Substance P (SP) is implicated in brain inflammation. We clarified relationship between serum SP concentrations and functional outcome of acute intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH). METHODS: We quantified admission serum SP concentrations in 106 ICH patients. The primary outcome measure was a poor outcome at 90 days (modified Rankin Scale score ≥ 3) after onset. RESULTS: Patients with a poor outcome compared with the rest had substantially higher serum SP concentrations. The area under the curve for serum SP concentrations with regard to discriminating a poor outcome was 0.795 (95% CI, 0.706 to 0.867). Serum SP concentrations >449 pg/ml predicted the risk of a poor outcome with 63.0% sensitivity and 78.9% specificity, and were independently associated with a poor outcome (odds ratio, 5.437; 95% CI, 2.156 to 13.715). There were the positive associations between serum SP concentrations, National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale score (r = 0.480), hematoma volume (r = 0.464) and serum C-reactive protein concentrations (r = 0.398). CONCLUSIONS: Higher serum SP concentrations in the acute phase of ICH were intimately associated with aggravated inflammation response, rising severity and increased risk of a poor functional outcome, suggesting that serum SP could be an inflammatory prognostic factor for ICH.
