BACKGROUND: Edible and medicinal herbs1 (EMHs) refer to a class of substances with dual attribution of food and medicine. These substances are traditionally used as food and also listed in many international pharmacopoeias, including the European Pharmacopoeia, the United States Pharmacopoeia, and the Chinese Pharmacopoeia. Some classical formulas that are widely used in traditional Chinese medicine include a series of EMHs, which have been shown to be effective with obvious characteristics and advantages. Notably, these EMHs and Chinese classical prescriptions2 (CCPs) have also attracted attention in international herbal medicine research because of their low toxicity and high efficiency as well as the rich body of experience for their long-term clinical use. PURPOSE: Our purpose is to explore the potential therapeutic effect of EMHs with immune-inflammatory modulation for the study of modern cancer drugs. STUDY DESIGN: In the present study, we present a detailed account of some EMHs used in CCPs that have shown considerable research potential in studies exploring modern drugs with immune-inflammatory modulation. METHODS: Approximately 500 publications in the past 30 years were collected from PubMed, Web of Science and ScienceDirect using the keywords, such as natural products, edible and medicinal herbs, Chinese medicine, classical prescription, immune-inflammatory, tumor microenvironment and some related synonyms. The active ingredients instead of herbal extracts or botanical mixtures were focused on and the research conducted over the past decade were discussed emphatically and analyzed comprehensively. RESULTS: More than ten natural products derived from EMHs used in CCPs are discussed and their immune-inflammatory modulation activities, including enhancing antitumor immunity, regulating inflammatory signaling pathways, lowering the proportion of immunosuppressive cells, inhibiting the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines, immunosuppressive factors, and inflammatory mediators, are summarized. CONCLUSION: Our findings demonstrate the immune-inflammatory modulating role of those EMHs used in CCPs and provide new ideas for cancer treatment in clinical settings.

Aqueous nickel-zinc (Ni-Zn) batteries have received increasing research interests because of their reliable safety and economical-friendliness. However, the retarded ionic diffusion, low capacity and limited stability of traditional Ni-based cathodes greatly impedes the practical application of Ni-Zn batteries. Herein, two metal organophosphonate materials of Ni methylphosphonate (Ni-MPA) and Ni phenylphosphonate (Ni-PPA) directly grown on Ni foam are constructed successfully through one step solvothermal technique. These two self-supported Ni organophosphonates featured hybrid two-dimensional (2D) structures consisting of alternating inorganic and organic layers, where the inorganic layers are formed by six-coordinated Ni2+ bridged by oxygen atoms and capped by organophosphonate groups, availing to provide rich open redox reaction sites, rapid ion diffusion and structural flexibility. The research results reveal that the organic groups in phosphonic acid ligands have important influence on their electrochemical properties. Consequently, the Ni-MPA electrode exhibits a higher specific capacity of 2.27 mAh/cm2 compared to that of the Ni-PPA electrode (1.1 mAh/cm2) at 3.0 mA/cm2; however, it demonstrates a more rapid transformation rate into Ni(OH)2 in an alkaline solution. Furthermore, the constructed Ni-MPA//Zn battery can deliver an impressive areal energy density of 2.95 mWh/cm2, good rate performance as well as a long-term cycling stability.

Concrete structures under wind and earthquake loads will experience tensile and compressive stress reversals. It is very important to accurately reproduce the hysteretic behavior and energy dissipation of concrete materials under cyclic tension-compression for the safety evaluation of concrete structures. A hysteretic model for concrete under cyclic tension-compression is proposed in the framework of smeared crack theory. Based on the crack surface opening-closing mechanism, the relationship between crack surface stress and cracking strain is constructed in a local coordinate system. Linear loading-unloading paths are used and the partial unloading-reloading condition is considered. The hysteretic curves in the model are controlled by two parameters: the initial closing stress and the complete closing stress, which can be determined by the test results. Comparison with several experimental results shows that the model is capable of simulating the cracking process and hysteretic behavior of concrete. In addition, the model is proven to be able to reproduce the damage evolution, energy dissipation, and stiffness recovery caused by crack closure during the cyclic tension-compression. The proposed model can be applied to the nonlinear analysis of real concrete structures under complex cyclic loads.

Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma is a well-known herbal medicine with a wide range of pharmacological functions that has been used throughout Chinese history. This review presents a comprehensive introduction to this herb and its classical prescriptions. The article discusses the resources and distribution of species, methods of authentication and determination chemical composition, quality control of the original plants and herbal medicines, dosages use, common classical prescriptions, indications, and relevant mechanisms of the active content. Pharmacokinetic parameters, toxicity tests, clinical trials, and patent applications are discussed. The review will provide a good starting point for the research and development of classical prescriptions to develop herbal medicines for clinical use.

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are an important class of enzymes in the body that function through the extracellular matrix (ECM). They are involved in diverse pathophysiological processes, such as tumor invasion and metastasis, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, periodontal disease, osteogenesis imperfecta, and diseases of the central nervous system. MMPs participate in the occurrence and development of numerous cancers and are closely related to immunity. In the present study, we review the immunomodulatory role of MMPs in colitis-associated cancer (CAC) and discuss relevant clinical applications. We analyze more than 300 pharmacological studies retrieved from PubMed and the Web of Science, related to MMPs, cancer, colitis, CAC, and immunomodulation. Key MMPs that interfere with pathological processes in CAC such as MMP-2, MMP-3, MMP-7, MMP-9, MMP-10, MMP-12, and MMP-13, as well as their corresponding mechanisms are elaborated. MMPs are involved in cell proliferation, cell differentiation, angiogenesis, ECM remodeling, and the inflammatory response in CAC. They also affect the immune system by modulating differentiation and immune activity of immune cells, recruitment of macrophages, and recruitment of neutrophils. Herein we describe the immunomodulatory role of MMPs in CAC to facilitate treatment of this special type of colon cancer, which is preceded by detectable inflammatory bowel disease in clinical populations.

The rapid colorimetric detection of neomycin sulfate has been achieved using polyvinyl pyrrolidone shell coated gold nanoparticle (Au@PVP NPs) sol. We also observed that, the aggregation of Au@PVP NPs, possibly caused by the hydrogen bonds formed between neomycin sulfate and PVP shell, generates a new surface plasmon resonance absorption in the wavelength of 600 ~ 700 nm. The proposed method showed an excellent performance towards the determination of neomycin sulfate in wide linear range from 0.01 ~ 10 µM with a correlation coefficient of 0.99 and low detection limit of 1 nM. After extracted with trichloroacetic acid and treated with hot chloroform, neomycin sulfate in the tilapia fish samples was detected with satisfied recovery. Additionally, the high selectivity of Au@PVP NPs sol towards neomycin sulfate has been achieved even in presence of common interfering agents. This method has the advantages of high sensitivity, rapidity, specificity, low cost and no complicated pretreatment procedure.

Cancer is a serious disease with an increasing number of reported cases and high mortality worldwide. Gastrointestinal cancer defines a group of cancers in the digestive system, e.g., liver cancer, colorectal cancer, and gastric cancer. Coptidis Rhizoma (C. Rhizoma; Huanglian, in Chinese) is a classical Chinese medicinal botanical drug for the treatment of gastrointestinal disorders and has been shown to have a wide variety of pharmacological activity, including antifungal, antivirus, anticancer, antidiabetic, hypoglycemic, and cardioprotective effects. Recent studies on C. Rhizoma present significant progress on its anticancer effects and the corresponding mechanisms as well as its clinical applications. Herein, keywords related to C. Rhizoma, cancer, gastrointestinal cancer, and omics were searched in PubMed and the Web of Science databases, and more than three hundred recent publications were reviewed and discussed. C. Rhizoma extract along with its main components, berberine, palmatine, coptisine, magnoflorine, jatrorrhizine, epiberberine, oxyepiberberine, oxyberberine, dihydroberberine, columbamine, limonin, and derivatives, are reviewed. We describe novel and classic anticancer mechanisms from various perspectives of pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, and pharmaceutics. Researchers have transformed the chemical structures and drug delivery systems of these components to obtain better efficacy and bioavailability of C. Rhizoma. Furthermore, C. Rhizoma in combination with other drugs and their clinical application are also summarized. Taken together, C. Rhizoma has broad prospects as a potential adjuvant candidate against cancers, making it reasonable to conduct additional preclinical studies and clinical trials in gastrointestinal cancer in the future.

This work describes the preparation of aripiprazole sustained-release microcrystals for intramuscular injection, through recrystallization, drying, wet grinding, and solidification steps, which had a great impact on the product quality. Here, we evaluated the crystal form of the drug in each step by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), demonstrating that there is no change in the crystal form of aripiprazole monohydrate (H1) during grinding and freeze-drying. Microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) data showed that freeze-drying had no effect on the morphology of milled H1, and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) results showed that the freeze-dried formulation had acceptable water content. In particular, in this study, a similarity factor fitting was applied to determine the similarity of the particle size cumulative distribution curve, and the similarity factor value (99.00) showed that there was no change in the particle size distribution before and after freeze-drying. A two-chamber transmembrane method was used to investigate the in vitro release of the aripiprazole sustained-release microcrystal (ALSI) and commercial preparations (Abilify Maintena®). The similarity factor fitting of in vitro release profiles and drug cumulative release curves in vivo yielded similarity factor values of 98.00 and 95.43, respectively, indicating similar in vitro release and in vivo bioavailability of rats between the ALSI and Abilify Maintena®. A single-dose administration could produce long-term effects for a month. For a microcrystalline suspension, in addition to the conventional quality control indicators, the similarity of the cumulative particle size distribution, the in vitro release profile, and the similarity of the drug release percentage in vivo can be used to reflect product quality and process control.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) on quality of life (QOL) and psychological health of breast cancer survivors and patients. METHODS: A total of 1289 references were examined from an overall literature search in PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews. Randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of CBT compared with a range of comparators in cancer survivors. We assessed the effect of CBT by using the standardized mean difference as effect size. RESULTS: Among 1289 abstracts and 292 full-text articles reviewed, 10 studies were included. At the posttreatment period, the pooled effect size for CBT on QOL was 0.57 (95% CI, 0.44 to 0.69; P < .001), on depression was -1.11 (95% CI, -1.28 to -0.94; P < .001), on stress was -0.40 (95% CI, -0.53 to -0.26; P < .001), on anxiety was -1.10 (95% CI, -1.27 to -0.93; P < .001), and on hyperarousal cluster of symptoms was -0.18 (95% CI, -0.30 to -0.05; P < .001). The QOL was considered statistically medium effect sizes. The depression and anxiety were considered statistically large effect sizes. CONCLUSIONS: Cognitive behavior therapy is an effective therapy for psychological symptoms of cancer survivors and patients, with meaningfully clinical effect sizes. These findings suggested that CBT should be used as the intervention for breast cancer survivors and patients when possible.

PURPOSE: Progesterone (PRG) was selected as a model drug to develop a long-acting injection system for poorly water-soluble drugs. METHODS: Microspheres with high density-low porosity were prepared by hot-melt extrusion (HME) combined with wet-milling as the representative formulation, and a microcrystal suspension was also studied as a comparison. The morphology, particle size and distribution, polymorphism, drug distribution, density and porosity were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, laser diffraction particle size analyzer, power X-ray diffraction and DSC respectively. The in vivo performance of the different formulations within 7 days after intramuscular injection was evaluated in male SD rats. RESULTS: The drug-loading rate of the microspheres could be as high as 40%. The average initial burst release of the microspheres (PLGA lactide:glycolide = 75:25) was only 6.7% much lower than that of the microsuspension (25.7%) and a sustained release was exhibited for at least 7 days. The release mechanism was speculated to be as follows. The microspheres are a drug depot with drug microcrystals in the PLGA matrix which is a layer by layer honeycomb structure. CONCLUSIONS: Microspheres prepared by HME combined with wet-milling could achieve a long-term sustained release effect as a novel long-acting formulation strategy.

Many formulation and manufacturing processes can lead to morphological and crystalline transitions in many polycrystalline drugs, changing the properties of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) such as solubility and physical stability which influence their therapeutic effects and safety and so limit their usefulness. Here, we report significant changes in crystal forms and morphology, including the shape and size of particles during the manufacture of off-white aripiprazole (APZ) dry powders used for long-acting and injectable suspensions. With the optimal top-down approach, powders were prepared by recrystallizing uniform monohydrous APZ (MA) and polycrystalline anhydrous APZ (AA) form III, characterized by thermal analysis, PXRD, and FT-IR. However, powders involving MA (MAP) with a lower mean size (2.126 µm), narrower distribution (span = 1.90), and higher stability compared with AA dry powders (AAP) were found to exhibit dehydration behavior and morphological changes after completion of the preparation processes based on the results of thermal analysis. In the case of APZ powders, we wished to obtain more information to guide in the industrial production and experimental design of suspensions in the future.
