RESUMO

In this work, we present the focusing of a Damon-Eshbach wave in a Ni80Fe20 film by a shaped, discrete transition of the film thickness. We devised an algorithm to determine the required shape of a spin-wave lens. Due to the anisotropy three geometries qualify as plano-convex lenses. One lens geometry has been realized experimentally and the emitted spin-wave pattern is investigated by time-resolved scanning Kerr microscopy.

RESUMO

We investigate metamaterials based on arrays of rolled-up gold/(In)GaAs microrolls. By finite-integration-technique simulations we show that these arrays interact resonantly with the magnetic component of an electromagnetic field and exhibit a negative effective permeability at terahertz frequencies. We find a strong dependence of the resonance frequency on small variations in the winding number n. We show that this dependence can be removed, if desired, by applying an additional slit into the metal layer of the tube.

RESUMO

We investigate the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons on silver tubes with finite-difference time-domain simulations. These surface plasmon polaritons exhibit azimuthal whispering gallery modes with quality factors in the hundreds. We show that the high quality factors arise from the coupling of the surface plasmon modes to photonic modes inside the tube. We examine the influence of a gain material on the quality factors and find that for material data of rhodamine 6G, the quality factors are enhanced significantly up to values of 3000.

RESUMO

Spin-wave excitations (magnons) are investigated in a one-dimensional (1D) magnonic crystal fabricated out of Ni80Fe20 nanowires. We find two different magnon band structures depending on the magnetic ordering of neighboring wires, i.e., parallel and antiparallel alignment. At a zero in-plane magnetic field H the modes of the antiparallel case are close to those obtained by zone folding of the spin-wave dispersions of the parallel case. This is no longer true for nonzero H which opens a forbidden frequency gap at the Brillouin zone boundary. The 1D stop band gap scales with the external field, which generates a periodic potential for Bragg reflection of the magnons.

RESUMO

We have investigated spin-wave excitations in rolled-up Permalloy microtubes using microwave absorption spectroscopy. We find a series of quantized azimuthal modes which arise from the constructive interference of Damon-Eshbach-type spin waves propagating around the circumference of the microtubes, forming a spin-wave resonator. The mode spectrum can be tailored by the tube's radius and number of rolled-up layers.

RESUMO

We report on optical modes in rolled-up microtube resonators that are excited by PbS nanocrystals filled into the microtube core. Long ranging evanescent fields into the very thin walled microtubes cause strong emission of the nanocrystals into the resonator modes and a mode shift after a self-removal of the solvent. We present a method to precisely control the number, the energy and the localization of the modes along the microtube axis.

RESUMO

We propose and realize a novel concept of a self-organized three-dimensional metamaterial with a plasma frequency in the visible regime. We utilize the concept of self-rolling strained layers to roll up InGaAs/GaAs/Ag multilayers with multiple rotations. The walls of the resulting tubes represent a radial superlattice with a tunable layer thickness ratio and lattice constant. We show that the plasma frequency of the radial superlattice can be tuned over a broad range in the visible and near infrared by changing the layer thickness ratio in good agreement with an effective metamaterial description. Finite difference time domain simulations reveal that the rolled-up radial superlattices can be used as hyperlenses in the visible.

RESUMO

We report on the direct observation of confined acoustic phonons in the photoluminescence spectra of single CdSe-CdS-ZnS nanocrystals, whose ligands were exchanged to poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) before they were embedded in a PEO matrix. Modeling a nanocrystal as an elastic sphere, the confined acoustic modes can be assigned to purely radial vibrations: the breathing mode and its two first radial harmonics. In addition to acoustic modes, we also observe longitudinal optical modes of the core material and, remarkably, also of both shell materials.

RESUMO

We investigated the optical phonon excitations of laterally aligned nanorod arrays by resonant Raman scattering. We observed a strong suppression of the surface-optical phonon modes in the closely packed aligned arrays and a small asymmetry in the longitudinal-optical phonon peak with respect to the rod alignment orientation. These observations can be explained by the spatial distribution of the potential of the different phonon modes derived from the first principles calculations.

RESUMO

We have studied the spin dynamics of microscopic permalloy rings at GHz frequencies. Increasing the irradiation power, we observe first nonlinear spin dynamics and second microwave-assisted switching (MAS). We explore the MAS phase diagram as a function of microwave power and frequency f and, in particular, extract the critical microwave field hc(f). Its frequency dependence reflects characteristic eigenfrequencies from both the linear and nonlinear spin-wave spectrum. By comparing hc(f) with the different susceptibilities, we gain insight into the microscopic processes which might be the basis of a predictive theory of MAS.

RESUMO

We investigated CdTe nanocrystal tetrapods of different sizes by resonant inelastic light scattering at room temperature and under cryogenic conditions. We observe a strongly resonant behavior of the phonon scattering with the excitonic structure of the tetrapods. Under resonant conditions we detect a set of phonon modes that can be understood as confined longitudinal-optical phonons, surface-optical phonons, and transverse-optical phonons in a nanowire picture.
