RESUMO

Materials analysis and characterization can provide important information as evidence in legal proceedings. The potential of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for the discrimination of glass fragments for forensic applications is presented here. The proposed method is based on the fact that glass materials can be characterized by their unique spectral fingerprint. Taking advantage of the multielement detection capability and minimal to no sample preparation of LIBS, we compared glass spectra from car windows using linear and rank correlation methods. Linear correlation combined with the use of a spectral mask, which eliminates some high-intensity emission lines from the major elements present in glass, provides effective identification and discrimination at a 95% confidence level.

High retention of inhaled glucocorticoids in the airways means prolonged anti-inflammatory action and low delivery into the serum. The objective of this study was to investigate the retention in and distribution of inhaled fluticasone propionate (FP) between central and peripheral human lung tissue and serum in vivo. In 17 patients undergoing lung resection surgery, a single 1.0 mg dose of FP was inhaled at varying time-points (range 2.8-21.7 h) preoperatively. Peripheral and central lung tissue was obtained, and blood was drawn simultaneously. FP concentrations in central lung tissue were approximately three to four times higher than peripheral lung tissue concentrations, which in turn, exceeded those found in serum by 10 times. FP was detectable up to 21 and 16 h, respectively, after inhalation, with drug levels falling almost in parallel in peripheral lung tissue and in serum. The results of this study demonstrate that fluticasone propionate is retained in lung tissue for a long time. Serum concentrations after a single inhaled dose are low. Retention of high concentrations of fluticasone propionate in the airways may promote high topical anti-inflammatory activity.

The influence of the spectral bandwidth of the spectrometer on the performance of the spectrometer is of great importance in atomic absorption spectrometry using continuum source (CS-AAS). For a theoretical analysis of the detection of small absorbances two cases have to be taken into account: as long as the limiting noise of the signal is given by the detector noise an increase in spectral bandwidth of the spectrometer implies an improvement in the limit of detection. In contrast, if the noise of the signal is dominated by the photon shot noise the detection limit should become independent of the spectral bandwidth. In this case the spectral bandwidth of the spectrometer should be chosen equal to the bandwidth of the absorption line to avoid spectral interferences. Theoretical calculations are presented for the dependence of the characteristic mass on the spectral bandwidth in case of CS-AAS measurements. The results are compared with experimental measurements for six different elements using continuum source as well as line sources. The investigations were done using a double echelle monochromator (DEMON) which offers a high spectral resolution lambda/Deltalambda of about 140,000.

To determine the characteristics and reproducibility of circadian rhythms of airway responsiveness to histamine and methacholine and their relationship to airway tone in patients with mild asthma, we studied nine subjects with complaints of nighttime awakening due to dyspnea and/or cough at least once a week. Their mean age was 31.4 yr (range 17-65) and their mean daytime FEV1 was 99 +/- 14 (SD) % predicted. Forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) and the provocative concentrations of histamine and methacholine necessary to decrease FEV1 by 20% (PC20FEV1) were determined every 4 h for 13 consecutive measurements. Three subjects were measured with histamine, three with methacholine, and three with both histamine and methacholine. Data were evaluated on an individual basis. PC20FEV1 to histamine and methacholine showed significant and reproducible circadian variations in all cases (P less than 0.01 each) with a mean amplitude of 1.00 +/- 0.17 (SD) doubling concentrations for histamine and 1.35 +/- 0.29 doubling concentrations for methacholine. The amplitude of PC20FEV1 was significantly larger (P less than 0.05) and the time of maximum responsiveness was significantly earlier (P less than 0.05) with methacholine compared with histamine. FEV1 showed significant (P less than 0.05) circadian variations in three of nine subjects, and peak expiratory flow rate showed variations in two subjects. Correlation between the variations of FEV1 and PC20FEV1 was significant (P less than 0.05) in 5 of 12 cases.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
