RESUMO

Thermochromic vanadium dioxide (VO2)-based smart radiator devices (SRDs) display emittance variation with changes in temperature, making them very promising for energy-efficient thermal control of spacecrafts in general, and nanosatellites in particular. However, the high solar absorptance of the VO2-based SRDs remains too high for their intended application. Based on an approach combining optical simulation and experimental work, I demonstrate that an additional top stack layer alternating between high and low refractive indices made of a-Si(25 nm)/SiO2(67 nm) reduces the solar absorptance of a VO2-based SRD by 35% (from 0.43 to 0.28) while keeping the emittance performance of the SRD within the requirements for the intended application (low-temperature emittance εL = 0.35, high-temperature emittance εH = 0.81 and emittance tuneability with temperature Δε = 0.46). I also discuss factors to consider while designing additional top stack layers alternating between high and low refractive indices to further decrease the SRD's solar absorptance without affecting its emittance performance.

RESUMO

Holey graphene, consisting of graphene sheets with in-plane nanopores, has recently attracted more attention as it expands graphene applications to other fields inaccessible by the pristine graphene. To ensure an effective implementation of holey graphene in the market, it is crucial to explore new preparation methods that are simple, cost effective, eco-friendly, versatile, and scalable. While ball milling of graphite in presence of exfoliating agents was found very effective in the preparation of graphene (doped and undoped) and graphene-composites, this technique remains unexplored for the preparation of holey graphene. In the present work, Nitrogen-doped multilayer holey graphene sheets were prepared by an all-solid, one-step procedure based on high-energy ball milling of graphite as the starting material in presence of melamine in a shaker-type mill for 1 hour under ambient conditions. Melamine acted simultaneously as an exfoliating agent to enhance the exfoliation of graphene layers and a diluent to protect graphite against the continuous fragmentation into amorphous carbon during the high-energy "shock" mode of ball milling. The high-energy "shock" mode of ball milling of graphite in presence of melamine induced the formation of multilayer defective graphene as an intermediate product before being converted into N-doped multilayer holey graphene after the removal of the in-plane defects during the milling process. The characterization of the final product confirmed the formation of N-doped multilayer holey graphene with a content in nitrogen as high as 12.96 at.%, making it promising for energy storage and energy conversion applications.

RESUMO

The complex interplay among several active degrees of freedom (charge, lattice, orbital, and spin) is thought to determine the electronic properties of many oxides. We report on combined ultrafast electron diffraction and infrared transmissivity experiments in which we directly monitored and separated the lattice and charge density reorganizations that are associated with the optically induced semiconductor-metal transition in vanadium dioxide (VO2). By photoexciting the monoclinic semiconducting phase, we were able to induce a transition to a metastable state that retained the periodic lattice distortion characteristic of the semiconductor but also acquired metal-like mid-infrared optical properties. Our results demonstrate that ultrafast electron diffraction is capable of following details of both lattice and electronic structural dynamics on the ultrafast time scale.
