RESUMO

PURPOSE: We evaluated the relationship between ocular surface clinical tests and quality of vision in patients with dry eye disease (DED). METHODS: In this study, 136 eyes of 72 dry eye patients were evaluated retrospectively using the ocular surface disease index (OSDI), measurement of tear film break-up time (TBUT), the Oxford score, Van Bijsterveld score, and Schirmer I test. Quality of vision was assessed with the optical quality analysis system (OQAS) using the objective scatter index (OSI) recorded over 20 seconds without blinking. Correlations between dry eye symptoms and signs, and OSI measurements were evaluated. RESULTS: The OSI and OSI standard deviation (OSI SD) were correlated with TBUT (r = -0.21, P = 0.013 and r = -0.18, P = 0.038, respectively), Oxford score (r = 0.31, P = 0.0002 and r = 0.18, P = 0.032, respectively), and the Van Bijsterveld score (r = 0.33, P = 0.0001 and r = 0.25, P = 0.003, respectively). The OSI also was correlated with the Schirmer test (r = -0.19, P = 0.025), OSDI (r = 0.17, P = 0.04), and the ocular symptoms subscale of the OSDI (r = 0.21, P = 0.01). OSI SD was correlated with the environmental triggers subscale of the OSDI (r = 0.21, P = 0.016). CONCLUSIONS: Quality of vision measured with the OQAS was correlated with dry eye symptoms and signs. The OQAS could be a useful tool to better evaluate visual function in patients with DED. TRANSLATIONAL RELEVANCE: The OQAS provides a better understanding of patient complaints about alteration of vision quality. It might be useful to integrate this objective system in severity assessments and follow-up of DED, especially for treatment evaluations.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To assess short-term functional and anatomical outcomes of refractory diabetic macular edema (DME) following a switch from ranibizumab or dexamethasone to aflibercept. METHODS: We included retrospectively eyes with persistent DME after at least 3 ranibizumab and/or one dexamethasone implant intravitreal injections (IVI). The primary endpoint was the mean change in visual acuity (VA) at month 6 (M6) after switching. RESULTS: Twenty-five eyes were included. Before switching to aflibercept, 23 eyes received a median of 9.5 ranibizumab, and among them, 6 eyes received one dexamethasone implant after ranibizumab and 2 eyes received only one dexamethasone implant. Baseline VA, before any IVI, was 52.9 ± 16.5 letters, and preswitch VA was 57.1 ± 19.6 letters. The mean VA gain was +8 letters (p = 0.01) between preswitch and M6. The mean central retinal thickness was 470.8 ± 129.9 µm before the switch and 303.3 ± 59.1 µm at M6 (p = 0.001). CONCLUSION: Switching to aflibercept in refractory DME results in significant functional and anatomical improvement. The study was approved by the France Macula Federation ethical committee (FMF 2017-138).

RESUMO

A series of triphenylenes with oligoethoxy chains of various length, TP6EOnM with n = 2, 3, 4, has been synthesised and purified by HPLC. The self-association of these disc-shaped molecules in dilute aqueous solutions (∼10(-7) to ∼4 × 10(-4) M) has been studied by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy. The free energy of association decreases as the length of the chains increases. As a result, for a given concentration, the average size of aggregate diminishes as the chain length increases. While the absorption properties of the monomer are identical for the three molecules, the extinction coefficients of solutions of the three triphenylenes at a given concentration are significantly different and are directly linked to the average size of the aggregates. The change of epsilon values upon aggregation could explain the trend generally observed with dyes for solar cells substituted with chains of increasing length showing increasing extinction coefficient values.
