RESUMO

Quantum chemistry and time-resolved spectroscopy are applied to rationalize how singlet fission (SF) is affected by systematic chemical modifications introduced into phenazinothiadiazoles (PTD). Substitution of the terminal aromatic ring of TIPS-tetracene by a thiadiazole group leads to a considerable change in the relative energies of its S1 and T1 states. Thus, in contrast to TIPS-tetracene, SF becomes exothermic for various PTD derivatives, which show S1-2T1 energy differences as high as 0.15 eV. This enables SF in PTD as corroborated by femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and TD-DFT calculations. The latter report T-T spectra consistent with thin film UV-vis femtosecond transient absorption of PTDs at long delays. TD-DFT calculations also show that the S1-T1 energy gap can be rationally tuned by introducing N atoms into the aromatic scaffold and by the halogenation of one side ring of the PTD. In addition, the specific S1-to-1(T1T1) electronic coupling depends on the crystal morphology and the electronic properties simultaneously. Thus, both of them govern the strength and the interplay between direct and superexchange couplings, which in the most favorable cases accelerate SF to rate constants beyond (100 fs)-1. Remarkably, direct coupling was found to contribute considerably to the total effective coupling and even to dominate it for some PTDs investigated here. A quantum yield of 200% is obtained on the early picosecond time scale for all compounds studied here, which is reduced to 100% due to triplet-triplet annihilation after a few nanoseconds.

Femtosecond pump-depletion-probe experiments were carried out in order to shed light on the ultrafast excited-state dynamics of triisopropylsilylethynyl (TIPS)-pentacene and two nitrogen-containing derivatives, namely, diaza-TIPS-pentacene and tetraaza-TIPS-pentacene. Measurements performed in the visible and near-infrared spectral range in combination with rate model simulations reveal that singlet fission proceeds via the extremely short-lived intermediate (1)TT state, which absorbs in the near-infrared spectral region only. The T1 → T3 transition probed in the visible region shows a rise time that comprises two components according to a consecutive reaction (S1 → (1)TT → T1). The incorporation of nitrogen atoms into the acene structure leads to shorter dynamics, but the overall triplet formation follows the same kinetic model. This is of particular importance, since experiments on tetraaza-TIPS-pentacene allow for investigation of the triplet state in the visible range without an overlapping singlet contribution. In addition, the pump-depletion-probe experiments show that the triplet absorption in the visible (T1 → T3) and near-infrared (T1 → T2) regions occurs from the same initial state, which was questioned in previous studies. Furthermore, an additional ultrafast transfer between the excited triplet states (T3 → T2) is identified, which is also in agreement with the rate model simulation. By applying depletion pulses, which are resonant with higher vibrational levels, we gain insight into internal vibrational energy redistribution processes within the triplet manifold. This additional information is of great relevance regarding the study of loss channels within these materials.

Clinical risk assessment involves absolute risk measures, but information on modifying risk and preventing cancer is often communicated in relative terms. To illustrate the potential impact of risk factor modification in model-based risk assessment, we evaluated the performance of the IBIS Breast Cancer Risk Evaluation Tool, with and without current body mass index (BMI), for predicting future breast cancer occurrence in a prospective cohort of 665 postmenopausal women. Overall, IBIS's accuracy (overall agreement between observed and assigned risks) and discrimination (AUC concordance between assigned risks and outcomes) were similar with and without the BMI information. However, in women with BMI > 25 kg/m(2), adding BMI information improved discrimination (AUC = 63.9 % and 61.4 % with and without BMI, P < 0.001). The model-assigned 10-year risk difference for a woman with high (27 kg/m(2)) versus low (21 kg/m(2)) BMI was only 0.3 % for a woman with neither affected first-degree relatives nor BRCA1 mutation, compared to 4.5 % for a mutation carrier with three such relatives. This contrast illustrates the value of using information on modifiable risk factors in risk assessment and in sharing information with patients of their absolute risks with and without modifiable risk factors.

The influence of the carbon to nitrogen substitution on the photoinduced dynamics of TIPS-pentacene was investigated by ultrafast transient absorption measurements on spin-coated thin films in the visible and in the near-infrared spectral region. A global target analysis was performed to provide a detailed picture of the excited-state dynamics. We found that the chemical modification has a high impact on the triplet formation and leads to shorter dynamics; hence it speeds up the singlet fission process. A faster relaxation from the singlet into the triplet manifold implies a higher efficiency because other relaxation channels are avoided. The air-stable aza-derivatives have the potential to exceed the energy conversion efficiency of TIPS-pentacene.

The photocycle of the proton acceptor complex mutant D227N of the bacterial retinal protein proteorhodopsin is investigated employing steady state pH-titration experiments in the UV-visible range as well as femtosecond-pump-probe spectroscopy and flash photolysis in the visible spectral range. The evaluation of the pH-dependent spectra showed that the neutralization of the charge at position 227 has a remarkable influence on the ground state properties of the protein. Both the pK(a) values of the primary proton acceptor and of the Schiff base are considerably decreased. Femtosecond-time-resolved measurements demonstrate that the general S(1) deactivation pathway; that is, the K-state formation is preserved in the D227N mutant. However, the pH-dependence of the reaction rate is lost by the substitution of Asp227 with an asparagine. Also no significant kinetic differences are observed upon deuteration. This is explained by the lack of a strongly hydrogen-bonded water in the vicinity of Asp97, Asp227, and the Schiff base or a change in the hydrogen bonding of it (Ikeda et al. (2007) Biochemistry 46, 5365-5373). The flash photolysis measurements prove a considerably elongated photocycle with pronounced pH-dependence. Interestingly, at pH 9 the M-state is visible until the end of the reaction cycle, leading to the conclusion that the mutation does not only lower the pK(a) of the Schiff base in the unphotolyzed ground state but also prevents an efficient reprotonation reaction.
