RESUMO

The pudu (Pudu puda), which is the smallest deer in the world and inhabits central and southern Chile and Argentina, is a ruminant and a browsing herbivore. The aim of this study was to provide a reference for interpretation of the normal anatomy of the pudu's gastrointestinal tract as imaged by abdominal computed tomography (CT). For the study, one adult female pudu was used. After a 24-h fast, the pudu was anaesthetized and positioned in sternal recumbency at the CT table. Image acquisition began immediately after intravenous injection of contrast media (MD-76(®); 370 mgI/ml) into the cephalic vein. Injection of contrast material was administered as a biphasic protocol. First, a manual bolus of contrast material was injected at a rate of 4 ml/s. Then, an additional continuous infusion injection (0.1 ml/min) was performed for adequate opacification of vascular structures. Transverse images of 5 mm thickness and 5 mm interval were obtained with a fourth-generation CT scanner, from the ninth thoracic vertebra (T9) until the first sacral (S1) vertebrae. CT images were labelled and compared with anatomical reference images for ruminants. Structures that were identified in the abdominal cavity included the stomach with its four compartments (rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasum), the small and large intestines, liver, spleen, kidneys and some major blood vessels (aorta, caudal vena cava). The distal loop of the ascending colon, the transverse colon, the pancreas and lymph nodes could not be identified. The resulting CT images provide a reference for normal cross-sectional abdominal anatomy of the adult pudu.

RESUMO

[reaction--see text] The synthesis of new phosphonites with a chiral paracyclophane backbone is described. The rhodium complexes derived from the phosphonites bearing biphenoxy and binaphthoxy substituents are highly active and highly selective catalysts for the asymmetric hydrogenation of dehydroamino acids and esters.

RESUMO

This paper examines the social thought of University of Wisconsin professors Richard T. Ely, John R. Commons, and Edward A. Ross during World War I. Like many of their fellow scholars, these three were actively involved in the pro-war effort. Although their support for the war was strongly conditioned by personal and occupational considerations, the impact of their wartime service was not restricted to those realms. Their social thought, which they impressed into service explaining and justifying the war, was itself altered in subtle and sometimes surprising ways by the forceful positions they took on the political, economic, and racial significance of the conflict.

RESUMO

The validity of a developmentally based life-stress model of depression was evaluated in 88 clinic-referred youngsters. The model focused on (a) the role of child-environment transactions, (b) the specificity of stress-psychopathology relations, and (c) the consideration of both episodic and chronic stress. Semistructured diagnostic and life-stress interviews were administered to youngsters and their parents. As predicted, in the total sample child depression was associated with interpersonal episodic and chronic stress, whereas externalizing disorder was associated with noninterpersonal episodic and chronic stress. However, the pattern of results differed somewhat in boys and girls. Youngsters with comorbid depression and externalizing disorder tended to experience the highest stress levels. Support was obtained for a stress-generation model of depression, wherein children precipitate stressful events and circumstances. In fact, stress that was in part dependent on children's contribution distinguished best among diagnostic groups, whereas independent stress had little discriminative power. Results suggest that life-stress research may benefit from the application of transactional models of developmental psychopathology, which consider how children participate in the construction of stressful environments.

RESUMO

The relationship between personality pathology and depression has been the focus of increasing attention, but few investigators have examined this issue prospectively or in adolescent community samples. The present study used both self report and interviewer assessments of personality disorder symptomatology and depression in a sample of 155 late adolescent women followed over three years. Personality pathology cluster and total scores demonstrated moderate to fairly high degrees of stability, indicating endurance of these traits in late adolescence. As predicted, Axis II symptoms were associated with concurrent depressive symptomatology. Overall, self-reported personality disorder symptoms, as well as those specifically in Clusters A and B, predicted interviewer-rated depression over two years beyond the contribution of initial depression, indicating that subclinical Axis II symptoms are a risk factor for subsequent depressive symptomatology.

RESUMO

The effects of depression and Axis I comorbidity on subsequent self-generated life stress were examined in a longitudinal sample of 134 late adolescent women. The results indicated that specific forms of psychopathology constitute a risk factor for future self-generated episodic stress, even when controlling for prior chronic stress. Comorbid depression had a particularly salient effect in the prediction of stress related to interpersonal conflicts. The effects of family psychopathology and sociotropy were mediated through participant psychiatric status, whereas autonomy made an independent contribution to the prediction of episodic stress. These results support C. Hammen's (1991b) stress generation model in a community sample, demonstrating how individuals with depression play a role in the creation of stress, and also refine prior work by showing that only the comorbid form of depression is associated with subsequent conflict-related stress.

RESUMO

This longitudinal study of 137 female high school seniors investigated the relationship of attachment cognitions, current psychological functioning, and psychological functioning 12 months later. Attachment cognitions, assessed with the Revised Adult Attachment Scale and the Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment, were significantly associated with current symptomatology. The Revised Adult Attachment Scale, in interaction with initial symptomatology, predicted depression, substance abuse, eating disorders, and personality disorders 12 months later. The Inventory of Parent and Peer Attachment parent subscales predicted eating disorder and personality disorder symptomatology, whereas the peer subscales predicted substance abuse, eating disorder, and personality disorder symptomatology.

RESUMO

Sixteen subjects hospitalized for treatment of cocaine dependence were administered a battery of neuropsychological tests within 72 h of last cocaine use and again approximately 2 weeks later. Twenty-one non-cocaine using control subjects, matched for age, gender, ethnicity and education, also received neuropsychological testing. Abstinence from mood altering substances during the 2-week study period was verified for both groups on three occasions using quantitative urine analysis. The results suggest that recent cocaine use is associated with impairment in memory, visuospatial abilities, and concentration during the acute phase of withdrawal, independent of withdrawal-related depression. Furthermore, many of these deficits appear to persist at least 2 weeks beyond cessation of cocaine use.

RESUMO

This chapter examines the neuroendocrine effects of acute exposure to and withdrawal from alcohol and cocaine, with special emphasis on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. We present the results from two preliminary controlled inpatient studies that document HPA dysfunction during acute exposure to alcohol and cocaine and during withdrawal from alcohol. We discuss the methodological approach of these studies in comparison to related attempts in the literature to use measures of thyroid and prolactin regulation to predict risk of relapse to alcohol and cocaine use, respectively. Our data and the results of related studies are presented in the context of a proposed index of HPA axis dysfunction that may provide a useful clinical measure of susceptibility to relapse during protracted abstinence from alcohol or cocaine.

RESUMO

Right ventricular function was assessed in 15 patients using right ventricular pressure-volume loops. Right ventricular pressure using a micromanometer-tipped catheter, thermodilution cardiac output and gated blood pool scintigrams were simultaneously obtained. To help isolate the right ventricle, a slant hole collimator was used. The measurements were repeated during dobutamine infusion, which was titrated so there was minimal change in systemic pressure and heart rate. The right ventricular pressure-volume loop resembles the usual left ventricular loop except that the isovolumic contraction phase is often not as distinct, and right-sided ejection may continue well beyond right ventricular peak systolic pressure. Systolic but not diastolic function improved with dobutamine administration. There was no significant difference in right ventricular systolic function (ejection fraction, stroke work index, stroke volume index and cardiac index) or in end-diastolic volume index between patients without (Group I) and with (Group II) significant right coronary artery stenosis. However, there was a small but significant difference in right ventricular end-diastolic pressure (5.3 +/- 2.5 and 8.1 +/- 1.8 mm Hg [p less than 0.05]) for Group I and II, respectively. Thus, the right ventricular pressure-volume loop can be used to graphically display right ventricular function and improvement in contractility with dobutamine. The right ventricular isovolumic contraction phase and ejection phase differ from those in the usual left ventricular loop. Although there was a small difference in right ventricular end-diastolic pressure in patients with and without right coronary artery stenosis, the right ventricular pressure-volume loop did not provide additional discriminatory information between these two groups of patients.

RESUMO

Two cases are reported in which bone imaging with 99mTc-labeled phosphate compounds revealed localized areas of decreased uptake corresponding to osteolytic metastases on bone radiographs. These "cold" bone lesions, although infrequent, should be considered to avoid false negative interpretations.
