RESUMO

Paracelsus was an adventurer in more than one way. We retrace the little that is known about his life and then focus on his adventures in the history of ideas, namely the scientific revolution he brought about for humoral pathology. Following the landmark study of Pagel (1982) we identify two of his conceptions of disease: diseases as fruits and diseases as minerals, discovered by a new science, a "scientia separationis". Paracelsus did not merely polemize against humoral pathology, but offered a new world view, a new paradigm, so that his endeavor can be characterized with Kuhn (1962) as a scientific revolution.

RESUMO

Applying the principles of evidence-based medicine in clinical practice is becoming more and more important for healthcare professionals in Germany. In this context Witten/Herdecke University has implemented an EbM Curriculum for medical students that is closely related to problem-based learning and clinical rotations within the scope of the six-year medical reform curriculum. Starting with the first semester, students will be able to acquire the necessary skills to search medical databases, to critically review the information retrieved according to EbM standards, to gather evidence for answering diagnostic or therapeutic questions during their clinical education and to ultimately participate in the development of clinical guidelines during their last year.

RESUMO

The present paper is intended to analyse the history of structural changes in the concept of health since the Enlightenment era. It will outline that health can be understood as a paradisiacal state of nature (Rousseau), as the result of the application of medical procedures and repair techniques (scientific medicine of the 19th and 20th century) or as a dissolving borderline concept (genetic enhancement techniques). The aim of medicine, i.e. health, must therefore be seen as a historically changeable concept. Given these changes in our understanding of health, ethical questions arise as to which concept of health ought to guide future medical practice.
