RESUMO

Artificial intelligence (AI) radar technology offers several advantages over other technologies, including low cost, privacy assurance, high accuracy, and environmental resilience. One challenge faced by AI radar technology is the high cost of equipment and the lack of radar datasets for deep-learning model training. Moreover, conventional radar signal processing methods have the obstacles of poor resolution or complex computation. Therefore, this paper discusses an innovative approach in the integration of radar technology and machine learning for effective surveillance systems that can surpass the aforementioned limitations. This approach is detailed into three steps: signal acquisition, signal processing, and feature-based classification. A hardware prototype of the signal acquisition circuitry was designed for a Continuous Wave (CW) K-24 GHz frequency band radar sensor. The collected radar motion data was categorized into non-human motion, human walking, and human walking without arm swing. Three signal processing techniques, namely short-time Fourier transform (STFT), mel spectrogram, and mel frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCCs), were employed. The latter two are typically used for audio processing, but in this study, they were proposed to obtain micro-Doppler spectrograms for all motion data. The obtained micro-Doppler spectrograms were then fed to a simplified 2D convolutional neural networks (CNNs) architecture for feature extraction and classification. Additionally, artificial neural networks (ANNs) and 1D CNN models were implemented for comparative analysis on various aspects. The experimental results demonstrated that the 2D CNN model trained on the MFCC feature outperformed the other two methods. The accuracy rate of the object classification models trained on micro-Doppler features was 97.93%, indicating the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

RESUMO

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the treatment outcomes of epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI) therapy alone or in combination with locoregional brain therapy for advanced EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients with brain metastases. Material and methods: A retrospective study involving 72 advanced EGFR-mutant NSCLC patients with brain metastases at the Vietnam National Cancer Hospital were conducted. Patients were divided into 2 groups: EGFR-TKI (erlotinib) monotherapy and EGFR-TKI combined with locoregional therapy (γ knife surgery - GKS or whole-brain radiation therapy). Evaluation criteria included clinical and laboratory characteristics, central nervous system (CNS) progression time, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), T790M mutation rate, and adverse events. Results: Epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor monotherapy patients had better performance status (PS), fewer CNS symptoms, and significantly fewer brain metastases (p < 0.05). Median PFS and OS were 11 and 25 months, respectively, in both groups. Patients with PS 0-1 had longer median PFS (15 months) than those with PS 2 (7 months) (p = 0.039). Exon 19 deletion patients in both groups had longer median OS (26 months) than those with L858R exon 21 (15 months) (p = 0.023). Patients with T790M mutation who received osimertinib after progression had longer median OS (41 months vs. 23 months, p = 0.0001). Median time to CNS progression was 13.9 months (48 patients). Longer time to CNS progression correlated with longer OS (R2 = 0.89). Conclusions: Epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor therapy, with or without locoregional therapy, is effective for advanced EGFR-mutant NSCLC patients with brain metastases. Exon 19 deletion patients had better prognosis.

RESUMO

The real-time monitoring of food freshness in refrigerators is of significant importance in detecting potential food spoiling and preventing serious health issues. One method that is commonly reported and has received substantial attention is the discrimination of food freshness via the tracking of volatile molecules. Nevertheless, the ambient environment of low temperature (normally below 4 °C) and high humidity (90% R.H.), as well as poor selectivity in sensing gas species remain the challenge. In this research, an integrated smart gas-tracking device is designed and fabricated. By applying pump voltage on the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) membrane, the oxygen concentration in the testing chamber can be manually tailored. Due to the working principle of the sensor following the mixed potential behavior, distinct differences in sensitivity and selectivity are observed for the sensor that operated at different oxygen concentrations. Typically, the sensor gives satisfactory selectivity to H2S, NH3, and C2H5OH at the oxygen concentrations of 10%, 30%, and 40%, respectively. In addition, an acceptable response/recovery rate (within 24 s) is also confirmed. Finally, a refrigerator prototype that includes the smart gas sensor is built, and satisfactory performance in discriminating food freshness status of fresh or semi-fresh is verified for the proposed refrigerator prototype. In conclusion, these aforementioned promising results suggest that the proposed integrated smart gas sensor could be a potential candidate for alarming food spoilage.

RESUMO

Day-old male chick culling is one of the world's most inhumane problems in the poultry industry. Every year, seven billion male chicks are slaughtered in laying-hen hatcheries due to their higher feed exchange rate, lower management than female chicks, and higher production costs. This study describes a novel non-invasive method for determining the gender of chicken eggs. During the incubation period of fourteen days, four electrodes were attached to each egg for data collection. On the last day of incubation, a standard polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based chicken gender determination protocol was applied to the eggs to obtain the gender information. A relationship was built between the collected data and the egg's gender, and it was discovered to have a reliable connection, indicating that the chicken egg gender can be determined by measuring the impedance data of the eggs on day 9 of incubation with the four electrodes set and using the self-normalization technique. This is a groundbreaking discovery, demonstrating that impedance spectroscopy can be used to sex chicken eggs before they hatch, relieving the poultry industry of such an ethical burden.

RESUMO

This study proposes a flexible and stretchable 3D polymer film with photonic crystals for the visible detection of spoiled milk. Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) was used as the substrate for the photonic crystal structure. The back barrier layer with a regular array of nanohemispheres of anodic aluminum oxide film was used as a template for electroforming a nickel mold. The nanohemisphere array was then nanoimprinted onto the TPU substrate to form a strain-controllable photonic crystal (SCPC) structure on it. Food spoilage can be easily detected by the structural color change caused by the gas it produces. Experimental results confirmed that the structural color change of the fabricated SCPC TPU film occurred when the elongation (ΔL) of the film reached 0.2 mm (1.2 %). Furthermore, spoiled milk detection experiments showed that the proposed SCPC TPU film is a highly intelligent and cost-effective biosensor for detecting spoiled food in a container.

RESUMO

The label-free biosensor has emerged as an effective tool for the purpose of early detection of causative pathogens such as Escherichia coli as a preventive measure. In this study, a biorecognition-element-free interdigitated microelectrode (IDµE) sensor is designed and developed with this in mind, with good reliability and affordability. Results show that the designed sensor can identify E. coli with good selectivity using an impedance and capacitance of 7.69 MHz. At its optimum impedance of 1.3 kHz, the IDµE sensor can reliably quantify E. coli in a range of measurement (103.2~106 cfu/mL), linearity (R2 = 0.97), sensitivity (18.15 kΩ/log (cfu/mL)), and limit of detection (103.2 cfu/mL). In summary, the IDµE sensor developed possesses high potential for industrial and clinical applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Inflammatory skin diseases were the most common problem in dermatology. This study aimed to develop a circuit by using a simple method for noninvasive, objective, and real-time skin inflammation screening. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sprague-Dawley rats were used in this study. The rats were chemically induced to suffer from skin inflammation at the back of their left-hand side while the right-hand side of their back remained untreated serving as a control. Impedance (Z) spectrum of the rat's skin was recorded. RESULTS: Two characteristic frequencies (4.5 and 48.3 kHz) were found. At the two frequencies, the impedance of inflammatory skin tissue (ZIST ) was found to be significantly (P < .05) smaller than that of normal healthy skin tissue (ZNHST ). Moreover, the ratio of the impedance measured at 4.5 kHz (Zf = 4 .5 kHz ) to the impedance measured at 48.3 kHz (Zf = 48.3 kHz ), that is, Zf = 4.5 kHz /Zf = 48.3 kHz , was capable of skin inflammation screening. It was observed that the inflammatory skin tissue (IST) had the smaller value of Zf = 4 .5 kHz /Zf = 48.3 kHz (value < 8.5) and normal healthy skin tissue (NHST) had the higher value of Zf = 4 .5 kHz /Zf = 48.3 kHz (value ≈ 10) which almost remained constant. CONCLUSION: A circuit was developed which was used for measuring the skin impedance accurately at the two characteristic frequencies for skin inflammation screening.

RESUMO

In the current work, we report the on-chip fabrication of a low-temperature H2S sensor based on p-type Co3O4 nanofibers (NFs) using the electrospinning method. The FESEM images show the typical spider-net like morphologies of synthesized Co3O4 NFs with an average diameter of 90 nm formed on the comb-like electrodes. The EDX data indicate the presence of Co and O elements in the NFs. The XRD analysis results confirm the formation of single-phase cubic spinel nanocrystalline structures (Fd3 m) for the synthesized Co3O4 NFs. The Raman results are in agreement with the XRD data through the presence of five typical vibration modes of the nanocrystalline Co3O4. The gas sensing properties of the fabricated Co3O4 NF sensors are tested to 1 ppm H2S within a temperature range of 150 °C to 450 °C. The results indicate a highest sensor response to 1 ppm H2S with the gas response of aproximately 2.1 times and the gas response/recovery times of 75 s/258 s at a low temperature of 250 °C. The fabricated sensor also demonstrates good selectivity and a low detection limit of 18 ppb. The overall results suggest a simple and effective fabrication process for the p-type Co3O4 NF sensor for practical applications in detecting H2S gas at low temperature.

RESUMO

In Vietnam, little is elucidated in scientific literatures about the mental health of caregivers of people with cancer. We conducted a cross-sectional study to report the situation and correlates of self-reported psychological distress among caregivers of cancer patients in Vietnam in 2019. Multiple logistic and linear regression analyses were performed. A total of 16.5% of the study participants had psychological distress. Respondent's mean score of negative emotion was 7.6 ± 2. Educational level and type of support were significantly associated with having psychological distress among caregivers. Gender, occupation, financial difficulty, treatment belief and social support significantly correlated to psychological distress level of caregivers.

RESUMO

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is a global health problem that features a very high mortality rate. The UL16 binding protein 2 (ULBP2) is a new biomarker for PC detection. This study develops a simple, reliable, and inexpensive immunosensor for the detection of the ULBP2 antigen while also investigating the effects of an array configuration of connected sensors and zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles on the immunosensor's sensitivity. The ULBP2 antibody was immobilized onto the screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) surfaces of three different sensors: a simple SPCE (ULBP2-SPCE); an SPCE array, which is a series of identical SPCE connected to each other at different arrangements of rows and columns (ULBP2-SPCE-1x2 and ULBP2-SPCE-1x3); and an SPCE combined with ZnO nanoparticles (ULBP2-ZnO/SPCE). Impedance spectrum measurements for the immunosensors to ULBP2 antigen were conducted and compared. According to the result, the array configurations (ULBP2-SPCE-1x2 and ULBP2-SPCE-1x3) show an improvement of sensitivity compared to the ULBP2-SPCE alone, but the improvement is not as significant as that of the ULBP2-ZnO/SPCE configuration (ULBP2-ZnO/SPCE > ULBP2-SPCE: 18 times larger). The ULBP2-ZnO/SPCE immunosensor has a low limit of detection (1 pg/mL) and a high sensitivity (332.2 Ω/Log(pg/mL)), excellent linearity (R2 = 0.98), good repeatability (coefficients of variation = 5.03%), and is stable in long-term storage (retaining 95% activity after 28 days storage). In an array configuration, the immunosensor has an increased signal-to-noise ratio (ULBP2-SPCE-1x3 > ULBP2-SPCE: 1.5-fold) and sensitivity (ULBP2-SPCE-1x3 > ULBP2-SPCE: 2.6-fold). In conclusion, either the modification with ZnO nanoparticles onto the sensor or the use of an array configuration of sensors can enhance the immunosensor's sensitivity. In this study, the best immunosensor for detecting ULBP2 antigens is the ULBP2-ZnO/SPCE immunosensor.

RESUMO

Thyroid nodule is a common disease in clinical practice. The diagnosis of malignant thyroid tumors determines the treatment strategy. Among a number of methods have claimed to help evaluating thyroid nodules, ultrasound is a usable one in spite of several disadvantages (dependent on the physician/technician, incomparable, etc.) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) accompanied by quantitative apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) is a promising diagnostic tool. This study was designed to investigate the usefulness of ADC cut-off values and the protocol of thyroid MRI derived from quantitative diffusion weighted imaging (DWI) in differentiating benign and malignant thyroid nodules. The study was conducted on 93 patients with 128 thyroid nodules, diagnosed and underwent surgery at Hanoi Medical University Hospital. All the patients took thyroid MRI with different b levels (from 200 to 800). ADC value was calculated to each b level, and the statistical tests were conducted with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS-Windows and Mac version 20) and STATA 12. The mean ADC with all the b ranging from 200 to 800 of malignant groups was significantly higher than the group of benign lesions (p from <0.001 to 0.01). We chose b = 500 as a standard b-value in the protocol of thyroid MRI. The ADC cut-off point for distinguishing malignant from benign thyroid lesions: 1.7 × 10-3 mm2/s with high accuracy (87.1%, 95% CI: 79.59-92.07%). The study revealed that quantitative diffusion weighted MRI with ADC measurement could potentially quantitatively differentiate between benign and malignant thyroid nodules.

RESUMO

The length of single crystalline nanowires (NWs) offers a perfect pathway for electron transfer, while the small diameter of the NWs hampers thermal losses to tje environment, substrate, and metal electrodes. Therefore, Joule self-heating effect is nearly ideal for operating NW gas sensors at ultralow power consumption, without additional heaters. The realization of the self-heated NW sensors using the "pick and place" approach is complex, hardly reproducible, low yield, and not applicable for mass production. Here, we present the sensing capability of the self-heated networked SnO2 NWs effectively prepared by on-chip growth. Our developed self-heated sensors exhibit a good response of 25.6 to 2.5 ppm NO2 gas, while the response to 500 ppm H2, 100 ppm NH3, 100 ppm H2S, and 500 ppm C2H5OH is very low, indicating the good selectivity of the sensors to NO2 gas. Furthermore, the detection limit is very low, down to 82 parts-per-trillion. As-obtained sensing performance under self-heating mode is nearly identical to that under external heating mode. While the power consumption under self-heating mode is extremely low, around hundreds of microwatts, as scaled-down the size of the electrode is below 10 µm. The selectivity of the sensors can be controlled simply by tuning the loading power that enables simple detection of NO2 in mixed gases. Remarkable performance together with a significantly facile fabrication process of the present sensors enhances the potential application of NW sensors in next generation technologies such as electronic noses, the Internet of Things, and smartphone sensing.

RESUMO

The on-chip growth and surface-functionalization have been recently regarded as promising techniques for large-scale fabrication of high performance nanowires gas sensors. Here we demonstrate a good NO2 gas-sensing performance of the tungsten oxide nanowires (TONWs) sensors realized by scalable on-chip fabrication and RuO2-functionalization. The gas response (Rg/Ra) of the RuO2-functionalized TONWs to 5 ppm of NO2 was 186.1 at 250 °C, which increased up to ∼18.6-fold compared with that of the bare TONWs. On the contrary, the responses of the bare and functionalized sensors to 10 ppm of NH3, 10 ppm of H2S and 10 ppm of CO gases were very low of about 1.5, indicating the good selectivity. In addition, the TONW sensors fabricated by the on-chip growth technique exhibited a good reversibility up to 7 cycles switching from air-to-gas with a response of 19.8 ± 0.033 (to 1 ppm of NO2), and this value was almost the same (about 19.5 ± 0.027) for 11 cycles after three months storage in laboratory condition. The response and selectivity enhancement of RuO2-functionalzied TONWs sensors was attributed to the variation of electron depletion layer due to the formation of RuO2/TONWs Schottky junctions and/or the promotion of more adsorption sites for NO2 gas molecule on the surface of TONWs, whereas the good reversibility was attributed to the formation of the stable monoclinic WO3 from the single crystal of monoclinic W18O49 after annealing at 600 °C.

RESUMO

Decoration of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of semiconducting metal oxide nanowires (NWs) to enhance material characteristics, functionalization, and sensing abilities has attracted increasing interests from researchers worldwide. In this study, we introduce an effective method for the decoration of Pd NPs on the surface of SnO2 NWs to enhance CO gas-sensing performance. Single-crystal SnO2 NWs were fabricated by chemical vapor deposition, whereas Pd NPs were decorated on the surface of SnO2 NWs by in situ reduction of the Pd complex at room temperature without using any linker or reduction agent excepting the copolymer P123. The materials were characterized by advanced techniques, such as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, scanning transmission electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The Pd NPs were effectively decorated on the surface of SnO2 NWs. As an example, the CO sensing characteristics of SnO2 NWs decorated with Pd NPs were investigated at different temperatures. Results revealed that the gas sensor exhibited excellent sensing performance to CO at low concentration (1-25ppm) with ultrafast response-recovery time (in seconds), high responsivity, good stability, and reproducibility.

RESUMO

We prepared an aminothiourea-derived Schiff base (DA) as a fluorescent chemosensor for Hg(2+) ions. Addition of 1 equiv of Hg(2+) ions to the aqueous solution of DA gave rise to an obvious fluorescence enhancement and the subsequent addition of more Hg(2+) induced gradual fluorescence quenching. Other competing ions, including Pb(2+), Cd(2+), Cr(3+), Zn(2+), Fe(2+), Co(3+), Ni(2+), Ca(2+), Mg(2+), K(+) and Na(+) , did not induce any distinct fluorescence changes, indicating that DA can selectively detect Hg(2+) ions in aqueous solution.

RESUMO

This study describes a novel type of interdigitated arrays (IDA), microfabricated by electropolymerizing structured Poly(1,8-diaminonaphthalene)/functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (PDAN/CNT) thin film onto a silicon chip for square wave voltammetry (SWV) multi-element heavy metal ion detection. The structure of PDAN/CNT was characterized by Raman, FE-SEM and AFM techniques. Analysed experiments reveal that the uptake of Hg(2+) by PDAN/CNT is quite specific and it can be used advantageously for electrochemical sensing of Hg(2+) thanks to original feature of (Hg(2+)/Hg(2)(2+)) redox potential with the respect to that of PDAN/CNT. As-developed IDA type electrode can extend its utility in other sensing applications.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Food change due to cooking temperature and unrecognized heat-formed chemical carcinogens may impact on the risk of stomach and colo-rectal cancers. To test this hypothesis a case-control study was performed. METHODS: A total of 670 cases of stomach and colo-rectal cancers matched with 672 hospital controls for sex and -/+5 years age admitted to three hospitals in Hanoi city in the North Viet Nam from October 2006 to September 2007 were the subjects. Five levels of food change due to cooking temperature were based on food color; white, pale yellow, yellow, dark yellow, and burnt. We asked study subjects to themselves report which of these five colors was their preferable intake before the onset of disease. The present study included; fried fishes-meats-eggs-potato-tofu; grilled foods; roasted foods; sugar, bread, heated wheat, and biscuits. These were cooked at temperatures as high as from 165 to 240 degrees C, based on the literature. Adjusted estimation of odds ratio was conducted controlling for possible confounding factors using STATA 8.0. RESULTS: A high intake of roasted meats, bread and biscuit significantly increased the risk of cancer as much as OR= 1.63, 95%CI= 1.04-2.54; OR= 1.40, 95%CI= 1.03-1.90; OR= 1.60, 95%CI= 1.03-2.46 with probabilities for trend = 0.029, 0.035, and 0.037, respectively. For exposure among controls: 529 (79%) were not exposed at all to roasted meats; 449 (67%) were not exposed at all to bread; and 494 (74%) were not exposed at all to biscuit. CONCLUSIONS: Observation of food change due to cooking temperature based on color is practically feasible for detecting associations with risk of developing cancer.

RESUMO

The present work aimed to provide a basis for examination of intake of selected food items determined with a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire (SQFFQ) and planned-food selection (PFS). From February to July of 2003, ninety one cancer patients and 90 matched (same sex and age within 5 years) non-cancer patients were directly interviewed by trained interviewers using the designed questionnaire at the inpatient-department of Viet Duc hospital, Ha Noi City, Viet Nam. Study subjects consumed more SQFFQ-food items than PFS-food items, so that the latter method might not accurately reflect dietary habits regarding estimation of nutrient intake, especially vitamins. Because these are beneficial factors acting against cancer development at many sites, the absence of food items selected by SQFFQ may result in a poor database regarding possible confounding factors. For futher clarification we then focused on vitamin C contributions of Vietnamese food and analyzed data of the National Nutritional Household Survey in 2000: 7,686 households throughout the country (vitamin C intake status) and 158 households with 741 persons of the population of Hanoi city (individual food items contributing to vitamin C). Direct interview using a validated questionnaire with an album of current Vietnamese food items-recipes and weighing checks was conducted to obtain information regarding all types of food intake over the last 24-hours. Contribution analysis using the Nutritive Composition Table of Vietnamese Foods, revision 2000, and stepwise regression analysis was applied. Average intake adjusted by ages of vitamin C per person per day was estimated. In total, the study subjects were found to currently consume 184 food items. Average intake of vitamin C was 72.5 mg per person per day at the national level: 57.9% from leafy vegetables, 33.4% from fresh fruits, and 6.4% from non-leafy vegetables. For vitamin C contribution, the highest 25 food items contributed to a cumulative 95.3% of vitamin C intake with a cumulative R2=0.99.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The International Collaborative Epidemiological Study of Host and Environmental Factors for Stomach and Colorectal Cancers in Southeast Asian Countries (SEACs) has been conducted in Viet Nam from 2003 to 2008 on a case-control basis. For further effective primary prevention, we examined gastric and colorectal cancer mortality nationwide in eight regions of Viet Nam in 2005-06. METHODS: Both demographic data and lists of all deaths in 2005-06 were obtained from all 10,769 commune health stations in Viet Nam. Five indicators included name, age, sex, date of death and cause of death was collected for each case. We selected only communes having the list of deaths with clear cause for each case and crude mortality rate for all causes from 300-600/100,000 as published by the Ministry of Health for a reasonable accuracy and completeness. Obtained data for all causes, all cancers, stomach and colorectal cancer deaths as well as demographic information were processed using Excel software and exported to STATA 8.0 for estimation of world age-standardized cancer mortality rates per 100,000. RESULTS: Data were available for 1,246 gastric cases, (819 male and 427 female) with age-standardized mortality rates from 12.7 to 31.3 per 100,000 in males and from 5.9 to 10.3 per 100,000 in females in the 8 regions of the country. For colorectal cancers, 542 cases (268 male and 274 female) gave mortality rates from 4.0 to 11.3 per 100,000 in males and from 3.0 to 7.8 per 100,000 in females. DISCUSSION: Stomach cancer mortality in males in the region of North East in the North Viet Nam (2005-06) was higher than that in Japan (2002) (31.3 versus 28.7 per 100,000) while colorectal cancer in Viet Nam was lower. While prevalence of Helicobacter pyloris infection in Viet Nam was from 70-75% in both males and females, the stomach cancer rate in males was significantly higher than in females, 31.3 versus 6.8 per 100,000, suggesting an influence of other environmental risk factors. Whether protective factors are operating against colorectal cancer in Viet Nam now needs to be explored.
