PURPOSE: In Europe, most medicines are taken orally and primarily packaged as single solid oral dosage forms (SODF) in blister chambers (alveoli) arranged on blister cards. Blister cards are constructed as multilayer laminates of aluminum (Al) foils and/or various plastic polymers bonded together, forming the alveoli, which are separated by more or less large gaps. We calculated the amount of packaging material (and thus waste) generated annually for the packaging of the most commonly prescribed SODF in Germany and estimated how much waste could be saved by rearranging the alveoli. METHODS: For this purpose, we analysed the SODF of the 50 most frequently prescribed medicines that were packaged in alveoli (N = 45; 13 of aluminum-aluminum blisters, 32 of mixed materials), measured and weighed their packaging material and content, calculated the annual amount of waste produced from them, and estimated how much waste could be saved if the alveoli were optimally positioned on the blister cards. In addition, we examined the variability of the blister packaging of eight groups of commonly prescribed generics of the same strength. RESULTS: Detailed analysis of the blister cards revealed that most of the material (69%) was used for the space between blisters and that aluminum-aluminum alveoli were more than four times larger than the packaged SODF. The (conservatively) estimated annual amount of composite waste generated for the primary packaging of these SODF was 3868 t (and extrapolated to the entire German pharmaceutical market 8533 t), of which an optimized arrangement of the blister chambers, i.e., a 2-mm sealing area around each alveolus and the arrangement of the SODF in 2 rows, would save approximately 37%. CONCLUSION: Considering that other ecological strategies are not yet mature, the optimal arrangement of blister chambers would be a captivatingly simple and, above all, immediately implementable strategy to avoid large amounts of avoidable waste.

BACKGROUND: Visual deterioration is a crucial point in minimally invasive surgery impeding surgical performance. Modern image processing technologies appear to be promising approaches for further image optimization by digital elimination of disturbing particles. To make them mature for clinical application, an experimental test environment for evaluation of possible image interferences would be most helpful. METHODS: After a comprehensive review of the literature (MEDLINE, IEEE, Google Scholar), a test bed for generation of artificial surgical smoke and mist was evolved. Smoke was generated by a fog machine and mist produced by a nebulizer. The size of resulting droplets was measured microscopically and compared with biological smoke (electrocautery) and mist (ultrasound dissection) emerging during minimally invasive surgical procedures. RESULTS: The particles resulting from artificial generation are in the range of the size of biological droplets. For surgical smoke, the droplet dimension produced by the fog machine was 4.19 µm compared with 4.65 µm generated by electrocautery during a surgical procedure. The size of artificial mist produced by the nebulizer ranged between 45.38 and 48.04 µm compared with the range between 30.80 and 56.27 µm that was generated during minimally invasive ultrasonic dissection. CONCLUSION: A suitable test bed for artificial smoke and mist generation was developed revealing almost identical droplet characteristics as produced during minimally invasive surgical procedures. The possibility to generate image interferences comparable to those occurring during laparoscopy (electrocautery and ultrasound dissection) provides a basis for the future development of image processing technologies for clinical applications.

A stable nonlinear optical point light source is investigated, based on field enhancement at individual, pointed gold nanocones with sub-wavelength dimensions. Exciting these cones with near-infrared, focused radially polarized femtosecond beams allows for tip-emission at the second harmonic wavelength (second harmonic generation, SHG) in the visible range. In fact, gold nanocones with ultra-sharp tips possess interesting nonlinear optical (NLO) properties for SHG and two-photon photoluminescence (TPPL) emission, due to the enhanced electric field confinement at the tip apex combined with centrosymmetry breaking. Using two complementary optical setups for bottom or top illumination a sharp tip SHG emission is discriminated from the broad TPPL background continuum. Moreover, comparing the experiments with theoretical calculations manifests that these NLO signatures originate either from the tip apex or the base edge of the nanocones, clearly depending on the cone size, the surrounding medium, and illumination conditions. Finally, it is demonstrated that the tip-emitted signal vanishes when switching from radial to azimuthal polarization.

We demonstrate that simulating plasmonic nanostructures by means of curved elements (CEs) significantly increases the accuracy and computation speed not only in the linear but also in the nonlinear regime. We implemented CEs within the discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method and, as an example of a nonlinear effect, investigated second-harmonic generation (SHG) at a silver nanoparticle. The second-harmonic response of the material is simulated by an extended Lorentz model (ELM). In the linear regime the CEs are ≈ 9 times faster than ordinary elements for the same accuracy, provide a much better convergence and show fewer unphysical field artifacts. For DG-SHG calculations CEs are almost indispensable to obtain physically reasonable results at all. Additionally, their boundary approximation has to be of the same order as their polynomial degree to achieve artifact-free field distributions. In return, the use of such CEs with the DG method pays off more than evidently, since the additional computation time is only 1%.

For two-dimensional (2D) arrays of metallic nanorods arranged perpendicular to a substrate several methods have been proposed to determine the electromagnetic near-field distribution and the surface plasmon resonances, but an analytical approach to explain all optical features on the nanometer length scale has been missing to date. To fill this gap, we demonstrate here that the field distribution in such arrays can be understood on the basis of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) that propagate along the nanorods and form standing waves. Notably, SPPs couple laterally through their optical near fields, giving rise to collective surface plasmon (CSP) effects. Using the dispersion relation of such CSPs, we deduce the condition of standing-wave formation, which enables us to successfully predict several features, such as eigenmodes and resonances. As one such property and potential application, we show both theoretically and in an experiment that CSP propagation allows for polarization conversion and optical filtering in 2D nanorod arrays. Hence, these arrays are promising candidates for manipulating the light polarization on the nanometer length scale.

RESUMO

Covalent tethering of macromolecules such as porphyrins to metal surfaces underpins bottom-up fabrication of systems intended for a variety of applications. Thiol linkages are especially useful but often need protection during macromolecule synthesis. By means of scanning tunneling microscopy, we directly observe the spontaneous deprotection of an acetyl-protected thioporphyrin upon contact with a silver surface, without the intervention of any solution-mediated chemistry.

We have studied reduction reactions for nitrogen fixation at Sellmann-type model complexes with Car-Parrinello simulation techniques. These dinuclear complexes are especially designed to emulate the so-called open-side FeMoco model. The main result of this work shows that in order to obtain the reduced species several side reactions have to be suppressed. These involve partial dissociation of the chelate ligands and hydrogen atom transfer to the metal center. Working at low temperature turns out to be one necessary pre-requisite in carrying out successful events. The successful events cannot be described by simple reaction coordinates. Complicated processes are involved during the initiation of the reaction. Our theoretical study emphasizes two experimental strategies which are likely to inhibit the side reactions. Clamping of the two metal fragments by a chelating phosphane ligand should prevent dissociation of the complex. Furthermore, introduction of tert-butyl substituents could improve the solubility and should thus allow usage of a wider range of (mild) acids, reductants, and reaction conditions.
