RESUMO
The prosthodontic treatment of patients with a history of temporomandibular disorders presents unique risk-management problems because of the varied nature, uncertain prognosis, and frequent recurrence of these disorders. Patients with temporomandibular disorders frequently require managed treatment over extended periods of time and may complicate the delivery and outcome of prosthodontic treatment. Informed consent is needed to protect both the patient and the prosthodontist because it facilitates proper communication, goal setting, and cooperation. The purpose of this article is to discuss the essential elements of informed consent and to present an informed consent program useful in the prosthodontic treatment of patients with temporomandibular disorders.

A temporomandibular disorder (TMD) conference was convened in 1982 by the president of the American Dental Association. One of the objectives was to develop guidelines for a brief screening history and examination relative to TMD in order to determine whether there is a need for a more comprehensive evaluation. Based on these guidelines and under the auspices of the American College of Prosthodontists, this article discusses a simplified TMD screening and examination form that requires minimum time for both the patient (history) and health care provider (examination) to complete. Succinct recommendations are also presented to enable the health care provider to quickly determine if a more detailed TMD history and examination are warranted.

After the extraction of a maxillary anterior tooth, a gingival deformity may occur due to the loss of the labial plate of bone. This often creates an esthetic problem in the construction of a fixed partial denture. In the past, various surgical techniques have been devised to eliminate this gingival defect. A technique using durapatite is discussed.
