Assessment of Community Awareness and Screening of Chagas Disease in the Latin American Community of Greater New Orleans.

Chagas disease is a public health problem in the Americas, from the southern United States (USA) to Argentina. In the USA, less than 1% of domestic cases have been identified and less than 0.3% of total cases have received treatment. Little is known about affected immigrant Latin American communities. A prospective study was conducted to assess knowledge about Chagas disease among the Latin American community living in the Greater New Orleans area. Participants answered a baseline questionnaire, viewed a short educational video presentation, completed a post-presentation questionnaire, and were screened with an FDA-approved blood rapid diagnostic test (RDT). A total of 154 participants from 18 Latin American countries (n = 138) and the USA (n = 16) were enrolled and screened for Trypanosoma cruzi infection. At baseline, 57% of the participants knew that Chagas disease is transmitted through an insect vector, and 26% recognized images of the vector. Following the administration of an educational intervention, the participants' knowledge regarding vector transmission increased to 91% and 35% of participants were able to successfully identify images of the vector. Five participants screened positive for T. cruzi infection, indicating a 3.24% [95%CI: 1.1-7.5%] prevalence of Trypanosoma cruzi infection within the Latin American community of the New Orleans area. Results highlight the urgent need for improving access to education and diagnostics of Chagas disease.

Los cambios cognitivos, tanto funcionales como estructurales presentes en el envejecimiento, son complejos y variados. En un sentido general, se ha encontrado asociado a esta etapa del ciclo vital un declive de gran parte de las funciones cerebrales; en relación a ello un estudio realizado por Román y Sánchez (1998) demostró que no sólo se produce un deterioro, sino que también se mantienen o se potencializan otros procesos cognitivos. Aunque las alteraciones se presentan en la mayoría de las funciones, es de especial interés exponer aquí, aquellas que se involucran con los procesos mnésicos; teniendo en cuenta que se ven afectados en el adulto mayor.

En el texto el Malestar en la cultura , Freud, con el propósito de esclarecer la búsqueda humana en la obtención de la felicidad, destaca que existen sufrimientos que amenazan al hombre, sufrimientos que pueden advenir en tres direcciones: de su propio cuerpo, del mundo externo y de sus relaciones con los otros hombres, siendo esta última la forma más penosa de todas. El malestar en la civilización está representado por el malestar en los lazos sociales. Y en las escuelas, en los niños, aparece el fenómeno del desinterés por el aprendizaje, como forma de denunciar ese malestar. El problema es complejo y se tratará de hacer un recorrido, más o menos juicioso, de lo que la teoría psicoanalítica indica. Muchas veces, la pregunta que padres y docentes se hacen es: ¿Por qué éste niño no aprende?; tal vez, lo implícito de éste interrogante, sería: ¿Qué aprende un niño?

Many times, the question that parents and teachers ask is: Why does this child not learn ?; perhaps, the implicit in this question would be: What does a child learn?

El objetivo de este ciclo de ensayos tiene que ver con la psicología y el arte, en cualquiera de sus manifestaciones; he escogido la literatura para hacer una aproximación de algo que ha torturado al hombre desde su nacimiento, y es el amor, o al menos el concepto que se tiene de este. Es bueno aclarar que sobre una producción de arte como en este caso la literatura, es imposible hacer un análisis, pero que nos sirve para tomar como ejemplo algún tema tratado por el autor. En este caso retomé dos libros que me llevan a pensar acerca de lo que me he propuesto redactar, uno se llama " el perfume " de Partick Sünskind , y el otro, "del amor y otros demonios" de García Márquez.

The objective of this cycle of essays has to do with psychology and art, in any of its manifestations; I have chosen literature to make an approximation of something that has tortured man since his birth, and it is love, or at least the concept of it. It is good to clarify that on an art production as in this case the literature, it is impossible to make an analysis, but that it serves us to take as an example some subject treated by the author. In this case I resumed two books that lead me to think about what I have proposed to write, one is called "the perfume" of Partick Sünskind, and the other, "of love and other demons" by García Márquez.
