RESUMO

Poverty is a leading cause of numerous health and social inequities in the United States. Educators are increasingly searching for ways to create meaningful learning opportunities about poverty and its profound effect on individuals and communities. In this narrative, we explore our own perspectives as faculty who guide students through a simulated poverty experience. This essay unfolds primarily as a dialogue among us as we make sense of and clarify why we participate in the coordination and facilitation of poverty simulations on our campus and their anticipated benefits for future health care professionals and social service providers.

RESUMO

Poverty contributes to acute illness, chronic disease and health inequity among millions of Americans, yet health care providers often do not understand the daily experiences of those who live below the poverty line and how it affects their interactions with the health care system. In this narrative, we share healthcare students' stories and reflect on how they account for their experiences of participating in a poverty simulation. Their words come from reflection assignments, and when we read their words, that for a moment, many of our students understand that as a healthcare practitioner, they can make a difference in the life of someone living in poverty. We believe that this experience will inspire our students to make meaningful change as future healthcare professionals. We also believe that the impact on these students goes toward our collective goal as teachers of future healthcare providers to make a difference in our world.

RESUMO

Pedagogical foundations exist for incorporating technology in instruction; however, these foundations have not kept pace with technology's evolution. Through the use of Information Communication Technologies (ICTs), students now can share content directed at external audiences, i.e., audiences other than the instructor. These audiences are referred to as authentic audiences as they are public-facing and exist outside of the classroom. The existing literature offers evidence of student satisfaction with assignments directed at appealing to external audiences, however, the literature provides no comprehensive pedagogical rationale for assignments directed at authentic audiences wherein the goals are self-determined. The authors discuss the theory of heutagogy, the study of self-determined learning, as an approach for assessing assignments that utilize ICTs and are directed at authentic audiences. Finally, the authors offer an approach for the assessment of these assignments, including a rubric.

RESUMO

This historical study examines the early years of the federal program of services for children with physical disabilities in the United States (US) during the 1930s, known today as services for Children with Special Health Care Needs (CSHCN). Established as part of the Social Security Act (SSA) of 1935, the Crippled Children Services (CCS) program was one of the first medical programs for children supported by the federal government. Under the SSA, states and territories quickly developed state-level CCS programs during the late 1930s. The US Children's Bureau administered the program for the federal government and helped states to incorporate preventive services and interdisciplinary approaches to service provision into state-level CCS programs. Factors that influenced the implementation of these programs included the availability of matching state funds, the establishment of state programs for crippled children prior to the SSA, and the accessibility of qualified health care professionals and facilities. The early efforts of this federal program on behalf of children with disabilities can be seen in services for CSHCN today.
