BACKGROUND: Although exercise benefits female cancer survivors, clinical decision-making regarding timing, frequency, duration, and intensity is lacking. Optimizing exercise interventions in this population is necessary. This study aimed to describe existing digital home-based exercises and to assess their effectiveness at improving physical health in female cancer survivors upon completion of therapy. DESIGN: We conducted a systematic review using articles from Web of Science, Embase and Medline (Ovid). We included intervention studies examining the effects of digital home-based exercise programs on post-treatment recovery in female cancer survivors. Rob2 and ROBIN I were used to assess quality of studies. Quality-of-life, fatigue score, and physical performance were assessed using meta-analysis. RESULTS: This study involved 1578 female cancer survivors in 21 interventions. Following guidelines and supervised exercise with coaches led to better outcomes than interventions without guidelines, programs without coaches, or lower intensity exercise. Exercise led to significant improvement in some physical performance outcomes. Significant improvements were seen in physical performance outcomes, including the 6-min walk test, metabolic equivalent task, and number of steps per day. CONCLUSION: Providing cancer survivors with standard guidelines for home-based, coach-supervised, vigorous exercise on digital platforms could improve their physical function, health, and quality-of-life.

Although organ transplantation is associated with significant survival rates and cost benefits, postoperative complications still occur. Gastrointestinal complications, including those involving the stomach and intestines, account for 1-6% of posttransplant complications, with intestinal perforation specifically accounting for approximately 9%, depending on the center. In Vietnam, there are no comprehensive reports on these complications. Therefore, we report three clinical cases of gastrointestinal perforation following transplantation. Three cases of intestinal perforation are described in this case series. In 2023, a 16-year-old female patient who underwent heart transplantation for congenital heart disease was diagnosed with intestinal perforation on the 12th day. The patient required continued blood filtration support after surgery. In 2018, six days after liver transplantation, a 56-year-old male patient was diagnosed with intestinal perforation, which was subsequently repaired, and the ends of his intestines were removed. The patient was discharged in stable condition after 30 days. In 2017, five days after kidney transplantation, a 46-year-old female patient was diagnosed with intestinal perforation, which was repaired, and the perforation site was left open. The patient was discharged in stable condition after 40 days. Intestinal perforation is a relatively rare, but not uncommon, complication. Early diagnosis is challenging due to nonspecific clinical symptoms and signs. Considering the possibility of intestinal perforation and obtaining early abdominal computed tomography imaging can help prevent delayed diagnosis.

Since the rapid expansion of antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV, transmitted drug resistance (TDR) has become a major concern in Vietnam. HIV services there are transitioning to be covered by social insurance. Access to pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is being expanded to tackle the growing HIV epidemic among men who have sex with men. Therefore, a cross-sectional study was conducted at 10 ART facilities in Northern Vietnam from 9th December 2019 to 9th June 2022 to investigate the prevalence and pattern of TDR among ART-naïve people living with HIV (PLWH). TDR mutations were defined according to the World Health Organization 2009 List of Mutations for Surveillance of Transmitted Drug Resistant HIV Strains. Mutation transmission dynamics and TDR clusters were investigated via phylogenetic analysis. We enrolled 391 ART-naïve PLWH. The overall TDR prevalence was 4.6%, with an annual prevalence of 6.0% in 2019/2020, 4.8% in 2021, and 1.3% in 2022. TDR mutations to non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (2.8%), including K103N were the most common. Less commonly, the protease inhibitor-associated mutation M46I and mutations to nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, including M184V/ I, were observed. CRF01_AE was the most common subtype (77.0%). CRF07_BC (14.3%), which had been rare in Vietnam, was also observed. No genetic association was observed between HIV-1 sequences with TDR mutations. In conclusion, the overall prevalence of TDR was stably low in this region. The phylogenetic tree suggests that TDR clusters have not formed. Continuous monitoring of HIV TDR and strains is crucial to maintaining ART and PrEP efficacy.

ZnO nanomaterials have been extensively used as photocatalysts for the removal of pollutants in aqueous environments. This study explores the enhanced photocatalytic performance of porous ZnO coral-like nanoplates synthesized via a one-pot wet-chemical method and subsequent annealing treatment. Characterization through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) measurements confirmed the nanoplates' porous structure, single-crystal structure, 100 nm thickness, and 80 nm pore size. These unique structural characteristics of the ZnO coral-like nanoplates enabled effective photodegradation of the organic dye rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. Under simulated sunlight, the ZnO photocatalyst exhibited exceptional performance, achieving a 97.3% removal rate of RhB after 210 minutes of irradiation. The prepared ZnO photocatalyst also showed remarkable photostability and regeneration capability for RhB photodegradation with a decreased efficiency of less than 15% after eight testing cycles. The potential mechanism of the ZnO photocatalyst toward RhB degradation was also studied and is discussed in detail.

Background: Afatinib is indicated for advanced-stage non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR) and uncommon mutations. However, real-world studies on this topic are limited. This study aimed to evaluate afatinib as first-line therapy for locally advanced and metastatic NSCLC with uncommon EGFR mutations. Patients and methods: A retrospective study included 92 patients with advanced NSCLC with uncommon and compound EGFR mutations, treated with afatinib as first-line therapy. Patients were followed up and evaluated every 3 months or when symptoms of progressive disease arose. The endpoints were objective response rate (ORR), time-to-treatment failure (TTF), and adverse events. Results: The G719X EGFR mutation had the highest occurrence rate (53.3% for both monotherapy and the compound). By contrast, the compound mutation G719X-S768I was observed at a rate of 22.8%. The ORR was 75%, with 15.2% of patients achieving complete response. The overall median TTF was 13.8 months. Patients with the G719X EGFR mutation (single and compound) had a median TTF of 19.3 months, longer than that of patients with other mutations, who had a median TTF of 11.2 months. Patients with compound EGFR mutations (G719X and S768I) demonstrated a median TTF of 23.2 months compared to that of 12.3 months for other mutations. Tolerated doses of 20 or 30 mg achieved a longer median TTF of 17.1 months compared to 11.2 months with 40 mg. Median TTF differed between patients with and without brain metastasis, at 11.2 and 16.9 months, respectively. Rash (55.4%) and diarrhea (53.3%) were the most common adverse events, primarily grades 1 and 2. Other side effects occurred at a low rate. Conclusion: Afatinib is effective for locally advanced metastatic NSCLC with uncommon EGFR mutations. Patients with G719X, compound G719X-S768I mutations, and tolerated doses of 20 or 30 mg had a longer median TTF than those with other mutations.

Background: Honey is a nutritious food made by bees from nectar and sweet deposits of flowering plants and has been used for centuries as a natural remedy for wound healing and other bacterial infections due to its antibacterial properties. Honey contains a diverse community of bacteria, especially probiotic bacteria, that greatly affect the health of bees and their consumers. Therefore, understanding the microorganisms in honey can help to ensure the quality of honey and lead to the identification of potential probiotic bacteria. Methods: Herein, the bacteria community in honey produced by Apis cerana was investigated by applying the next-generation sequencing (NGS) method for the V3-V4 hypervariable regions of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene. In addition, lactic acid bacteria (LAB) in the honey sample were also isolated and screened for in vitro antimicrobial activity. Results: The results showed that the microbiota of A. cerana honey consisted of two major bacterial phyla, Firmicutes (50%; Clostridia, 48.2%) and Proteobacteria (49%; Gammaproteobacteria, 47.7%). Among the 67 identified bacterial genera, the three most predominant genera were beneficial obligate anaerobic bacteria, Lachnospiraceae (48.14%), followed by Gilliamella (26.80%), and Enterobacter (10.16%). Remarkably, among the identified LAB, Lactobacillus kunkeei was found to be the most abundant species. Interestingly, the isolated L. kunkeei strains exhibited antimicrobial activity against some pathogenic bacteria in honeybees, including Klebsiella spp., Escherichia coli, Enterococcus faecalis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. This underscores the potential candidacy of L. kunkeei for developing probiotics for medical use. Taken together, our results provided new insights into the microbiota community in the A. cerana honey in Hanoi, Vietnam, highlighting evidence that honey can be an unexplored source for isolating bacterial strains with potential probiotic applications in honeybees and humans.

Acetone is a well-known volatile organic compound that is widely used in different industrial and domestic areas, but it can cause dangerous effects on human health. Thus, the fabrication of highly sensitive and selective sensors for recognition of acetone is incredibly important. Here, we prepared the SnO2/Pd-NiO (SPN) nanowires-based gas sensor for the detection of acetone, in which, the amount of Pd nanoparticles were varied to enhance the performance of the devices. We demonstrated that the acetone gas sensing performance of the SPN device was significantly enhanced, showing increases of 3.72 and 6.53 folds compared to pristine SnO2 and NiO sensors, respectively. The Pd-NiO 0.01% wt Pd SPN sensor (SPN-1) exhibited an excellent response (Ra/Rg = 14.88) toward 500 ppm acetone gas. The SPN-1 sensor also showed a fast gas response time of 11/150 seconds with 500 ppm Acetone at 450 °C, while the recovery time was 468/526 seconds. Additionally, the sensor showed good selectivity toward acetone over other reducing gases, such as NH3, CH4, and VOCs. With those results, the SPN-1 sensor shows superiority compared to sensors based on pure materials.

Some candidates of a new circulating recombinant form (CRF) of HIV-1 were found in northern Vietnam in our previous study. We succeeded in near full-length sequencing using MinION with plasma samples from 12 people living with HIV. Three of the samples were CRF109_0107, which was recently reported in China. Three others were the newly identified CRF127_07109, while six of them were considered to be CRF127_07109-related unique recombinant forms (URFs). The time to the most recent common ancestor of CRF127_07109 was estimated to be between 2015 and 2019. Our findings showed that CRF127_07109 and related URFs were generated recently in northern Vietnam, rather than migrated independently to northern Vietnam.

Objectives: To understand antibiotic prescribing and influencing factors to inform antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) interventions to reduce unwanted consequences of antibiotic use in hospitals in Vietnam, a lower-middle-income country in Asia. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study of doctors at three tertiary hospitals using non-probability convenience sampling, through a paper-based (Hospitals 1 and 2) or electronic (Hospital 3) survey. Questions included items on perceptions regarding antibiotic resistance and AMS, prescribing practices, knowledge, demographics and training. We used principal components analysis and mixed-effects models to examine practices and identify influencing factors. Results: Among 314 surveyed participants, 61%, 57% and 59% in Hospitals 1, 2 and 3, respectively, felt certain about the appropriateness of their antibiotic prescriptions. In total, 9% reported sometimes prescribing antibiotics when not needed to meet patients' expectations, and 13% reported doing so to avoid perceived complications. Higher prescribing confidence was found among those with positive perceptions about AMS (P < 0.0001), whereas negative perceptions about colleagues' practices reduced this confidence (P < 0.0001). Individual preference for branded antibiotics was associated with more unnecessary prescribing whereas having higher prescribing confidence decreased the habits of prescribing when not needed. Conclusions: This study provides important implications for design of hospital interventions to address influencing factors on antibiotic prescribing in Vietnam and similar resource-limited settings. Specific interventions should target improving knowledge through education and training for doctors, enhancing the support from the AMS team, and promoting guidelines and policies for appropriate antibiotic use in hospital.

Vaccinations can serve as an important preventive measure against the porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) virus that currently threatens the swine industry. This study focuses on the development of a fusion protein vaccine, FliC99-mCOE, which combines the N-terminus of flagellin (FliC99) with a modified core neutralizing epitope (mCOE) of PEDV. In silico immunoinformatic analysis confirmed the construct's non-toxic, non-allergenic, and highly antigenic nature. Molecular docking and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations demonstrated FliC99-mCOE's strong binding to the TLR-5 immunological receptor. Repeated exposure simulations and immunological simulations suggested enhanced cell-mediated immunity. Both FliC99-mCOE and an inactivated PEDV vaccine were produced and tested in mice. The results from cell proliferation, ELISA, and neutralization assays indicated that FliC99-mCOE effectively stimulated cellular immunity and neutralized PEDV. We conclude that the FliC99-mCOE fusion protein may serve as a promising vaccine candidate against PEDV.

Phytochemical investigation of the trunks from Gnetum latifolium led to the isolation of a novel phenolic glucoside, 2E-2,4-di-(3,4-dihydroxyphenyl)but-2-en-1-yl-O-ß-D-glucopyranoside (1), along with five known stilbene derivatives (2-6). Their structures were determined mainly using high-resolution electrospray ionisation mass spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopic analyses, followed by comparisons of observed spectral data with reported values. The novel compound 1 in G. latifolium was found to be useful as a chemotaxonomic marker. Biological evaluation revealed that compound 6 had remarkable inhibitory effects on nitric oxide production, with a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 4.85 ± 0.20 µM, which was much higher than that of the positive control dexamethasone (IC50 = 14.20 ± 0.54 µM).

Cuprous oxide/copper/cupric oxide nanoparticles were synthesized through a hybrid process involving anodic dissolution and a controlled redox reaction between NaOH and glucose in the solution. The study demonstrates the structural manipulation of the material by varying the reaction components within the solution. Morphology, structural analyses using SEM (Scanning Electron Microscope), EDX (Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy), TEM (Transmission Electron Microscope), FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy), XRD (X-ray diffraction), and XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) unveiled the tunability of the material's structure based on the reaction components. Nitrogen adsorption analysis employing the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) equation confirmed the material's porosity, while Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) measurements provided insights into the materials' hydrodynamic size and zeta potential. The results demonstrated that by increasing the glucose/NaOH ratio during the reaction, the different structures and morphologies of the distinct products were obtained from the clustering of small nanoparticles to cubic shape and flower-like structure. Antibacterial activity tests conducted on various bacterial strains showed a correlation between the morphology and structure of the material and its antibacterial properties. The highest substantial antibacterial efficacy against all tested bacterial strains at a dosage of 100 µg/L was obtained for the samples with clustering morphology, whereas the remaining materials showed no discernible antibacterial effect against one of the studied bacteria. The results also demonstrated that the sample with a clustering structure exhibited superior antibacterial properties when dispersed in water containing dimethylsulfoxide.

Caffeoylquinic acids (CQAs) are well-known antioxidants. However, a key aspect of their radical scavenging activity - the mechanism of action - has not been addressed in detail thus far. Here we report on a computational study of the mechanism of activity of CQAs in scavenging hydroperoxyl radicals. In water at physiological pH, the CQAs demonstrated ≈ 104 times higher HOO˙ antiradical activity than in lipid medium (k(lipid) ≈ 104 M-1 s-1). The activity in the aqueous solution was determined by the hydrogen transfer mechanism of the adjacent hydroxyl group (O6'-H) of the dianion states (Γ = 93.2-95.2%), while the single electron transfer reaction of these species contributed 4.8-6.8% to the total rate constants. The kinetics estimated by the calculations are consistent with experimental findings in water (pH = 7.5), yielding a kcalculated/kexperimental = 2.4, reinforcing the reliability and precision of the computational method and demonstrating its utility for evaluating radical reactions in silico. The results also revealed the pH dependence of the HOO˙ scavenging activity of the CQAs; activity was comparable for all compounds below pH 3, however at higher pH values 5CQA reacted with the HOO˙ with lower activity than 3CQA or 4CQA. It was also found that CQAs are less active than Trolox below pH 4.7, however over pH 5.0 they showed higher activity than the reference. The CQAs had the best HOO˙ antiradical activity at pH values between 5.0 and 8.6. Therefore, in the physiological environment, the hydroperoxyl antiradical capacity of CQAs exhibits similarity to renowned natural antioxidants including resveratrol, ascorbic acid, and Trolox.

Rubiadin (RBD), an anthraquinone derivative, is obtained from Rubia cordifolia, a plant species classified under the Rubiaceae family. Rubiadin has proven beneficial properties, such as anticancer, neuroprotective, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic activity. The antioxidant activity of this molecule was suggested by some experimental results but has not been clearly established thus far. In this study, we employ DFT calculations to comprehensively assess the mechanism and kinetics of the HO•/HOO• radical scavenging activity of this compound in relation to solvents. RBD showed moderate HO• radical scavenging activity, with rate constants of 2.95 × 108 and 1.82 × 1010 M-1 s-1 in lipid and polar media, respectively. In the aqueous solution, the compound exhibited remarkable superoxide anion radical scavenging activity (k = 4.93 × 108 M-1 s-1) but modest HOO• antiradical activity. RBD also showed promising antiradical activity against a variety of radicals (CCl3O•, CCl3OO•, NO2, SO4•-, and N3•), while experimental and computational results confirmed that RBD has moderate activity in DPPH/ABTS•+ assays. Thus, RBD is predicted to be a good, albeit selective, radical scavenger.

Rosmarinic acid (RA) is reported in separate studies to be either an inducer or reliever of oxidative stress, and this contradiction has not been resolved. In this study, we present a comprehensive examination of the radical scavenging activity of RA using density functional theory calculations in comparison with experimental data. In model physiological media, RA exhibited strong HO• radical scavenging activity with overall rate constant values of 2.89 × 1010 and 3.86 × 109 M-1 s-1. RA is anticipated to exhibit excellent scavenging properties for HOO• in an aqueous environment (koverall = 3.18 × 108 M-1 s-1, ≈2446 times of Trolox) following the hydrogen transfer and single electron transfer pathways of the dianion state. The neutral form of the activity is equally noteworthy in a lipid environment (koverall = 3.16 × 104 M-1 s-1) by the formal hydrogen transfer mechanism of the O6(7,15,16)-H bonds. Chelation with RA may prevent Cu(II) from reduction by the ascorbic acid anion (AA-), hence blocking the OIL-1 pathway, suggesting that RA in an aqueous environment also serves as an OIL-1 antioxidant. The computational findings exhibit strong concurrence with the experimental observations, indicating that RA possesses a significant efficacy as a radical scavenger in physiological environments.

Δ4-3-Oxosteroid 5ß-reductase (AKR1D1) deficiency typically causes severe cholestasis occurs in newborns, leading to death unless patients are treated with primary bile acids. However, we encountered an AKR1D1 deficiency patient treated with only ursodeoxycholic acid who had cholestasis until about 1 year of age but then grew up healthy without further treatment. We also have been following other healthy patients with AKR1D1 mutation who have never developed cholestasis and have not been treated. However, reports are few, involving 3 patients. To better understand and clinically manage a diverse group of patients with AKR1D1 mutation who do not develop potentially fatal cholestasis in the neonatal period, ongoing accumulation and study of informative cases is needed.

A functional ternary substrate was developed for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensing systems. MnO2 nanosheets were synthesized by a simple and controllable hydrothermal method, followed by the integration of graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets. Subsequently, MnO2/GO nanostructures were decorated with plasmonic Ag nanoparticles (e-AgNPs). The MnO2/GO/e-Ag substrate could enhance the SERS sensing signal for organic chemicals without the assistance of chemical bonds between those analytes and the semiconductor within the ternary substrate, which have been proven to promote charge transfer and elevate the SERS enhancement in previous studies. Instead, GO nanosheets acted as a carpet also supporting the MnO2 nanosheets and e-AgNPs to form a porous structure, allowing the analytes to be well-adsorbed onto the ternary substrate, which improved the sensing performance of the SERS platform, compared to pure e-AgNPs, MnO2/e-Ag, and GO/e-Ag alone. The GO content in the nanocomposite was also considered to optimize the SERS substrate. With the most optimal GO content of 0.1 wt%, MnO2/GO/e-Ag-based SERS sensors could detect carbaryl, a pesticide, at concentrations as low as 1.11 × 10-8 M in standard solutions and 10-7 M in real tap water and cucumber extract.

Sumatranus lignans (SL) isolated from Cleistanthus sumatranus have demonstrated bioactivities, e.g., they were shown to exhibit immunosuppressive properties in previous research. Their structure suggests potential antioxidant activity that has not attracted any attention thus far. Consistently, a comprehensive analysis of the antioxidant activity of these compounds is highly desirable with the view of prospective medical applications. In this work, the mechanism and kinetics of the antiradical properties of SL against hydroperoxyl radicals were studied by using calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). In the lipid medium, it was discovered that SL reacted with HOO• through the formal hydrogen transfer mechanism with a rate constant of 101-105 M-1 s-1, whereas in aqueous media, the activity primarily occurred through the sequential proton loss electron transfer mechanism with rate constants of 102-108 M-1 s-1. In both lipidic and aqueous environments, the antiradical activity of compounds 6 and 7 exceeds that of resveratrol, ascorbic acid, and Trolox. These substances are therefore predicted to be good radical scavengers in physiological environments.

Crystal violet (CV) is an organic dye that is stabilized by the extensive resonance delocalization of electrons over three electron-donating amine groups. This prevents the molecule from being linked to a metal surface, and therefore, reduces the sensitivity of surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) sensors for this toxic dye. In this work, we improved the sensing performance of a silver-based SERS sensor for CV detection by modifying the active substrate. Molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) nanosheets were employed as a scaffold for anchoring electrochemically synthesized silver nanoparticles (e-AgNPs) through a single step of ultrasonication, leading to the formation of MoS2/Ag nanocomposites. As an excellent adsorbent, MoS2 promoted the adsorption of CV onto the surface of the substrate, allowing more CV molecules to be able to experience the SERS effect originating from the e-AgNPs. Hence, the SERS signal of CV was significantly enhanced. In addition, the effects of the MoS2 content of the nanocomposites on their SERS performance were also taken into account. Using MoS2/Ag with the most optimal MoS2 content of 10%, the SERS sensor exhibited the best enhancement of the SERS signal of CV with an impressive detection limit of 1.17 × 10-11 M in standard water and 10-9 M in tap water thanks to an enhancement factor of 2.9 × 106, which was 11.2 times higher than that using pure e-AgNPs.

The real-time monitoring of food freshness in refrigerators is of significant importance in detecting potential food spoiling and preventing serious health issues. One method that is commonly reported and has received substantial attention is the discrimination of food freshness via the tracking of volatile molecules. Nevertheless, the ambient environment of low temperature (normally below 4 °C) and high humidity (90% R.H.), as well as poor selectivity in sensing gas species remain the challenge. In this research, an integrated smart gas-tracking device is designed and fabricated. By applying pump voltage on the yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) membrane, the oxygen concentration in the testing chamber can be manually tailored. Due to the working principle of the sensor following the mixed potential behavior, distinct differences in sensitivity and selectivity are observed for the sensor that operated at different oxygen concentrations. Typically, the sensor gives satisfactory selectivity to H2S, NH3, and C2H5OH at the oxygen concentrations of 10%, 30%, and 40%, respectively. In addition, an acceptable response/recovery rate (within 24 s) is also confirmed. Finally, a refrigerator prototype that includes the smart gas sensor is built, and satisfactory performance in discriminating food freshness status of fresh or semi-fresh is verified for the proposed refrigerator prototype. In conclusion, these aforementioned promising results suggest that the proposed integrated smart gas sensor could be a potential candidate for alarming food spoilage.
