We aimed to elucidate the toxic effects and biological activities of 3-phenoxybenzoic acid (3PBA) and its metabolite products.Numerous in silico methods were used to identify the toxic effects and biological activities of 3PBA, including PASS online, molecular docking, ADMETlab 2.0, ADMESWISS, MetaTox, and molecular dynamic simulation.Ten metabolite products were identified via Phase II reactions (O-glucuronidation, O-sulfation, and methylation).All of the investigated compounds were followed by Lipinski's rule, indicating that they were stimulants or inducers of hazardous processes.Because of their high gastrointestinal absorption and ability to reach the blood-brain barrier, the studied compounds' physicochemical and pharmacokinetic properties matched existing evidence of harmful effects, including haematemesis, reproductive dysfunction, allergic dermatitis, toxic respiration, and neurotoxicity.The studied compounds have been linked to the apoptotic pathway, the reproductivity system, neuroendocrine disruptors, phospholipid-translocating ATPase inhibitors, and JAK2 expression.An O-glucuronidation metabolite product demonstrated higher binding affinity and interaction with CYP2C9, CYP3A4, caspase 3, and caspase 8 than 3PBA and other metabolite products, whereas metabolite products from methylation were predominant and more toxic.Our in silico findings partly meet the 3Rs principle by minimizing animal testing before more study is needed to identify the detrimental effects of 3PBA on other organs (liver, kidneys).Future research directions may involve experimental validation of in silico predictions, elucidation of molecular mechanisms, and exploration of therapeutic interventions.These findings contribute to our understanding of the toxicological profile of 3PBA and its metabolites, which has implications for risk assessment and regulatory decisions.

This study applied an electro-Fenton process using chemically modified activated carbon derived from rubber seed shells loaded with α-FeOOH (RSCF) as catalyst to remove tetracycline residues from aquatic environment. Catalyst characteristics were evaluated using SEM, EDS, XRD, and XPS, showing successful insertion of iron onto the activated carbon. The effects of the parameters were investigated, and the highest treatment efficiency was achieved at pH of 3, Fe: H2O2 ratio (w/w) of 500:1, catalyst dose of 1 g/L, initial TCH concentration of 100 mg/L, and electric current of 150 mA, with more than 90% of TCH being eliminated within 30 min. Furthermore, even after five cycles of use, the treatment efficiency remains above 90%. The rate constant is calculated to be 0.218 min-1, with high regression coefficients (R 2 = 0.93). The activation energy (Ea) was found to be 32.2 kJ/mol, indicating that the degradation of TCH was a simple reaction with a low activation energy. These findings showed that the RSCF is a highly efficient and cost-effective catalyst for TCH degradation. Moreover, the use of e-Fenton process has the advantage of high efficiency, low cost thanks to the recyclability of the catalyst, and environmental friendliness thanks to less use of H2O2.

Surveillance of the SARS-CoV-2 genome has become a crucial technique in the management of COVID-19, aiding the pandemic response and supporting effective public health interventions. Typically, whole-genomic sequencing is used along with PCR-based target enrichment techniques to identify SARS-CoV-2 variants, which is a complicated and time-consuming process that requires central laboratory facilities. Thus, there is an urgent need to develop rapid and cost-effective tools for precise on-site detection and identification of SARS-CoV-2 strains. In this study, we demonstrate the rapid diagnosis of COVID-19 and identification of SARS-CoV-2 variants by amplification and sequencing of the entire SARS-CoV-2 S gene using isothermal enzymatic recombinase amplification combined with the advanced Oxford nanopore sequencing technique. The entire procedure, from sampling to sequencing, takes less than 8 hours and can be performed with limited resources. The newly developed method has noteworthy implications for examining the transmission dynamics of the virus, detecting novel genetic variants, and assessing the effect of mutations on diagnostic approaches, antiviral treatments, and vaccines.

Even though the influence of the printing direction on the mechanical properties of 3D-printed samples by fused filament fabrication is established in the literature, very little is known about mechanical and electrical coupling. In this study, electrically conductive polylactic acid filled with carbon black particles undergoes monotonic and repeated progressive tensile loading to better understand the influence of the printing direction on the electro-mechanical properties of three-dimensional-printed samples. The objective is to analyse the electro-mechanical behaviour of this composite for its potential application as an actuator. The classical laminate theory is also applied to evaluate the relevance of this theory in predicting the mechanical characteristics of this material. In addition, a comprehensive damage analysis is performed using acoustic emission, infrared thermography, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray microcomputed tomography imaging. Results show that the degradation of the mechanical and electrical properties is highly influenced by the printing direction. The appearance and development of crazes in 0° filaments are highlighted and quantified. The conclusions drawn by this study underline the interest in using longitudinal and unidirectional printing directions to improve the conductive path within the samples. Furthermore, the evolution of the resistance throughout the experiments emphasizes the need to control the implemented voltage in the design of future electro-thermally triggered actuators.

Acute Hepatopancreatic Necrosis Disease (AHPND) represents a significant challenge in the field of shrimp aquaculture. This disease is primarily caused by Vibrio parahaemolyticus strains harbouring the pVA1 plasmid encoding the PirAvp and PirBvp toxins. To combat this epidemic and mitigate its devastating consequences, it is crucial to identify and characterize the receptors responsible for the binding of these pathogenic toxins. Our studied discovered that Penaeus vannamei's Serine protease inhibitor 3 (PvSerpin3) derived from shrimp hepatopancreatic tissues could bind to recombinant PirAvp , confirming its role as a novel PirAvp -binding protein (PA BP). Through comprehensive computational methods, we revealed two truncated PirAvp -binding proteins derived from PvSerpin3 called Serpin3(13) and Serpin3(22), which had higher affinity to PirAvp than the full-length PvSerpin3. The PA BP genes were amplified from a cDNA library that was reversed from total RNA extracted from shrimp, cloned and expressed in Escherichia coli. Three PA BP inclusion bodies were refolded to obtain the soluble form, and the recovery efficacy was found to be 100% for Serpin3 and Serpin3(13), while Serpin3(22) had a recovery efficacy of roundly 50%. Co-Immunoprecipitation (co-IP) and dot blot assays substantiated the interaction of these recombinant PA BPs with both recombinant PirAvp and VPAHPND (XN89)-producing natural toxins.

The concept of three-dimensional stacking of device layers has attracted significant attention with the increasing difficulty in scaling down devices. Monolithic 3D (M3D) integration provides a notable benefit in achieving a higher connection density between upper and lower device layers than through-via-silicon. Nevertheless, the practical implementation of M3D integration into commercial production faces several technological challenges. Developing an upper active channel layer for device fabrication is the primary challenge in M3D integration. The difficulty arises from the thermal budget limitation for the upper channel process because a high thermal budget process may degrade the device layers below. This paper provides an overview of the potential technologies for forming active channel layers in the upper device layers of M3D integration, particularly for complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor devices and digital circuits. Techniques are for polysilicon, single crystal silicon, and alternative channels, which can solve the temperature issue for the top layer process.

Diabetes mellitus remains a major global health issue, and great attention is directed at natural therapeutics. This systematic review aimed to assess the potential of flavonoids as antidiabetic agents by investigating their inhibitory effects on α-glucosidase and α-amylase, two key enzymes involved in starch digestion. Six scientific databases (PubMed, Virtual Health Library, EMBASE, SCOPUS, Web of Science, and WHO Global Index Medicus) were searched until August 21, 2022, for in vitro studies reporting IC50 values of purified flavonoids on α-amylase and α-glucosidase, along with corresponding data for acarbose as a positive control. A total of 339 eligible articles were analyzed, resulting in the retrieval of 1643 flavonoid structures. These structures were rigorously standardized and curated, yielding 974 unique compounds, among which 177 flavonoids exhibited inhibition of both α-glucosidase and α-amylase are presented. Quality assessment utilizing a modified CONSORT checklist and structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis were performed, revealing crucial features for the simultaneous inhibition of flavonoids against both enzymes. Moreover, the review also addressed several limitations in the current research landscape and proposed potential solutions. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between the social support (SS) and colorectal cancer (CRC) care utilization of patients in the central region of Vietnam. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional cohort study in which the cohort was defined as all residential patients diagnosed with CRC in a tertiary hospital, Hue Central Hospital (HCH), in central Vietnam from 2013 to 2019. Social support was considered the main independent variable and was evaluated using the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS), a self-administered 19-item SS survey. MOS-SSS is a widely used scale for assessing social support in CRC patients because it is brief, easy to use, reliable, and valid. In this study, we considered a data framework with a multilevel structure that included the patient level and duration of diagnosis as the second level. We estimated the magnitude of SS and CRC-specific treatment modalities using multilevel mixed-effects (MM) models under a hierarchical approach. RESULTS: The findings indicated that CRC care utilization rates were 89.9%, 48.5%, and 30.6% for surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiation therapy, respectively. The overall trend of SS decreased significantly and affected the CRC care utilization. We found a positive effects of overall SS, as well as emotional and tangible support, on the number of hospitalization admissions and chemotherapy utilization. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the use of the MOS-SSS should be continued in the long term for CRC patients to enhance medical accessibility and care utilization.

BACKGROUND: Traffic-related air pollution (TRAP) problems are unlikely to be solved in the short term, making it imperative to educate children on protective measures to mitigate the negative impact on their health. Children and their caregivers may hold differing views on wearing a face mask as a safeguard against air pollution. While many studies have focused on predicting children's health-protective behaviours against air pollution, few have explored the differences in perceptions between children and their caregivers. OBJECTIVES: To examine this, we conducted a study that compared the health beliefs of two generations and evaluated the factors that influence the use of masks by children to reduce air pollution exposure. METHODS: The study was conducted in 24 secondary schools and involved 8420 children aged 13-14 and their caregivers. We used a Health Belief Model (HBM)-based instrument containing 17-item self-administered health beliefs questionnaires to gather data. The results were analysed using hierarchical logistic regression to determine the probability of children frequently wearing masks to protect against TRAP. RESULTS: Our study showed both children and caregivers recognised that several factors could influence mask-wearing among children: discomfort or difficulty breathing while wearing a mask and forgetting to bring a mask when going outside; perceived threats of the poor quality of air and children's respiratory health problems; and cues to mask use (i.e., seeing most of their friends wearing facemasks and ease of finding masks in local stores). However, only children were significantly concerned with public perception of their appearance while wearing a mask. Females were more likely to wear masks, and caregivers with higher levels of education were more likely to encourage their children to wear masks. Children who commuted to schools by walking, biking, or motorbiking were also more accepting of mask-wearing than those who travelled by car or bus. CONCLUSIONS: Children and their caregivers hold different perceptions of wearing masks to protect against air pollution. Children are more susceptible to social judgements regarding their appearance when wearing a mask.

Objective: Stem cell therapy in periodontal tissue regeneration has reported optimistic regenerative results; evidence supporting its superiority over conventional methods is still ambiguous. Therefore, this meta-analysis aims to evaluate the therapeutic effects of stem cells in human periodontal regeneration. Design: A literature search was conducted to retrieve relevant articles on periodontal regeneration in stem cell therapy. A meta-analysis of the studies was conducted using the Stata software. Results: Fifteen studies that examined the effect of stem cell therapies on periodontal tissue regeneration in 369 patients were selected from databases. Regardless of the various types of cells, both odontogenic (periodontal ligament, dental pulp, gingiva stem cell) and non-odontogenic (bone marrow, periosteum-derived, and umbilical cord stem cells), the cell therapies witnessed significant improvements in terms of clinical attachment level (SMD, -0.67; 95CI, -0.90 to -0.43), probing depth (SMD, -0.76; 95% CI, -1.21 to - 0.31), radiographic intrabony defect depth (SMD, -0.87; 95% CI, -1.52 to -0.23), and histomorphometric analysis of mineralized bone (SMD, 0.80; 95% CI, 0.42 to 1.19) when compared to traditional without-cell treatment in patients. However, evidence on gingival recession, alveolar thickness gain, bone mineral density of bone core, and bone volume fraction of bone core outcomes did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Evidence suggests that the implementation of stem cell therapies in reconstructing compromised gingiva and alveolar bone tissue produces positive outcomes compared with conventional approaches. However, further well-designed investigations are needed to comprehensively identify the most effective source of cells and biomaterials for each case.

Introduction: Mucus in the female reproductive tract acts as a barrier that traps and eliminates pathogens and foreign particles via steric and adhesive interactions. During pregnancy, mucus protects the uterine environment from ascension of pathogens and bacteria from the vagina into the uterus, a potential contributor to intrauterine inflammation and preterm birth. As recent work has demonstrated the benefit of vaginal drug delivery in treating women's health indications, we sought to define the barrier properties of human cervicovaginal mucus (CVM) during pregnancy to inform the design of vaginally delivered therapeutics during pregnancy. Methods: CVM samples were self-collected by pregnant participants over the course of pregnancy, and barrier properties were quantified using multiple particle tracking. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed to analyze the composition of the vaginal microbiome. Results: Participant demographics differed between term delivery and preterm delivery cohorts, with Black or African American participants being significantly more likely to delivery prematurely. We observed that vaginal microbiota is most predictive of CVM barrier properties and of timing of parturition. Lactobacillus crispatus dominated CVM samples showed increased barrier properties compared to polymicrobial CVM samples. Discussion: This work informs our understanding of how infections occur during pregnancy, and directs the engineering of targeted drug treatments for indications during pregnancy.

In this work, we develop a mussel-inspired biosorbent combined with graphene oxide for removal of organic dyes in water sources. The composite was prepared via self-polymerization of dopamine in weak alkaline solution containing graphene oxide at ambient condition. Morphological and structural studies revealed that polydopamine has gradually grown to cover the surface of graphene oxide flakes, partially reduced these flakes, and somehow form many grains (size around 20 nm) on the flakes instead of making very large aggregates as usual. The mass ratio between two components of the composite was also investigated to find the optimal one which provides enough surface area (20 m2.g-1) and maintain adhesive sites in order to ensure high-efficiency removal of organic molecules. The adsorption kinetics and isotherms of as-prepared adsorbent towards methylene blue were found to fit well with pseudo-first order kinetics model and Langmuir isotherm. The maximum adsorption capacity (qm) and Langmuir constant (kL) were estimated to be 270 mg.g-1 and 0.49 L. mg-1. The as-prepared bio-sorbent is very promising for remediation of water sources contaminated with cationic organic molecules and heavy metal ions.

OBJECTIVE: Lack of recognition of asthma in childhood results in unmet asthma treatment needs and leads to the risk of sub-optimal respiratory health. The present study assessed the prevalence of asthmatic under-recognition in middle school children in Vietnam. METHODS: We conducted a school-based survey among 15,112 Vietnamese children. Most of them are aged from 13 to 14. Schools and students were recruited using multi-stage sampling. Respiratory symptoms were collected via self-report using a standardized tool from the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood. Under-recognition of asthma was defined as a presence of at least one asthma-like symptom but a negative response to having ever asthma. Associations were investigated using logistic regression. RESULTS: Prevalence of asthma-like symptoms was 27.3% and prevalence of physician-diagnosed asthma was 8.5%. Over 80% of symptomatic children were not diagnosed with asthma. Under-recognition of asthma was found more in girls (adjusted odds ratio; aOR = 1.75; 95%CI: 1.54 to 1.98). CONCLUSIONS: Asthma is significantly under-recognized in Vietnamese middle-school children. Urgent action is required to improve the recognition of asthma in Vietnam.

Since April 2022, the world has been witnessing a rapidly spreading outbreak of acute hepatitis of unknown origin in children < 16 years old that has affected several countries around the world. Most of the cases have presented with the clinical picture of severe hepatitis that has led to resorting to liver transplantation in several cases. Despite the numerous theories that have been suggested on the possible underlying etiologies of the outbreak, an association with hepatitis A-E viruses and a link to COVID-19 vaccines have been excluded. Adenovirus serotype 41 has been detected in numerous cases, which makes it the most likely underlying cause of the disease. Nevertheless, other hypotheses are being investigated to justify the severity of the clinical picture, which is not typical of this type of virus. This review aims to summarize the current knowledge about the outbreak, highlight the suggested working hypotheses, and report the public health measures undertaken to tackle the outbreak.

In spite of the rollout of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), the rate of new HIV infections remains a major health crisis. In the United States, new infections occur predominantly in men having sex with men (MSM) in rural settings where access to PrEP can be limited. As an alternative congruent with MSM sexual behavior, we have optimized and tested tenofovir (TFV) and analog-based iso-osmolar and hypo-osmolar (HOsm) rectal douches for efficacy against rectal simian/human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) infection of macaques. Single TFV HOsm high-dose douches achieved peak plasma TFV levels similar to daily oral PrEP, while other formulations yielded lower concentrations. Rectal tissue TFV-diphosphate (TFV-DP) concentrations at the portal of virus entry, however, were markedly higher after HOsm douching than daily oral PrEP. Repeated douches led to significantly higher plasma TFV and higher TFV-DP concentrations in rectal tissue at 24 hours compared with single douches, without detectable mucosal or systemic toxicity. Using stringent repeated intrarectal SHIV exposures, single HOsm high-dose douches delivered greater protection from virus acquisition for more than 24 hours compared with oral PrEP. Our results demonstrate a rapid delivery of protective TFV doses to the rectal portal of virus entry as a potential low-cost and safe PrEP alternative.

The effects of the grain size of Pt bottom electrodes on the ferroelectricity of hafnium zirconium oxide (HZO) were studied in terms of the orthorhombic phase transformation. HZO thin films were deposited by chemical solution deposition on the Pt bottom electrodes with various grain sizes which had been deposited by direct current sputtering. All the samples were crystallized by rapid thermal annealing at 700 °C to allow a phase transformation. The crystallographic phases were determined by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction, which showed that the bottom electrode with smaller Pt grains resulted in a larger orthorhombic phase composition in the HZO film. As a result, capacitors with smaller Pt grains for the bottom electrode showed greater ferroelectric polarization. The smaller grains produced larger in-plane stress which led to more orthorhombic phase transformation and higher ferroelectric polarization.

Acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) is a contagious disease for the shrimp cultivation, thus early detection of disease is an unmet need. This present study documented for the first time a simple lateral flow immunoassay (LFIA) strip using polyclonal antibodies was created for the rapid detection both of PirAvp and PirBvp protein simultaneously. LFIA method based on the principle of sandwich format. The label is the colloidal gold. The polyclonal antibody was conjugated with the colloidal gold acting as biorecognition element and coated onto the conjugate pad. The rabbit anti-Pirvp, anti-PirBvp antibodies, and goat anti-rabbit IgG antibody were separately sprayed onto a nitrocellulose membrane to form two test lines and one control line, respectively. The appearance of red bands at the control line and the test line indicated a positive result. A single coloured band at control area indicated a negative result. The limit of detection of LFIA was found to be 125 ng, which could be visually detected by naked eye within 15 min. There was no cross-reactivity observed with VPnon-AHPND. Furthermore, the sensitivity and specificity of LFIA were 94.0% and 98.0%, respectively. The developed test strip could be a game changer for early and in situ diagnosis of AHPND.

Understanding the determinants of the shadow economy plays a vital role in formulating policies for economic growth and development, particularly for the Southeast Asian countries-a new economic force for a global economy. The key drivers of a shadow economy, such as institutional quality, taxation, government expenditure, are widely examined. However, the effect of national intellectual capital, which affects macroeconomic indicators, on the shadow economy has largely been ignored in the existing literature. Our paper examines this critical link and its causality relationship for eight Southeast Asian countries from 2000 to 2017. This paper uses the dynamic ordinary least squares (DOLS) and fully modified ordinary least squares (FMOLS), which allow cross-sectional dependence and slope homogeneity in panel data analysis. Empirical findings from this paper indicate that national intellectual capital impacts negatively and significantly the shadow economy size. This finding implies that enhancing national intellectual capital reduces the shadow economy size. These two forces lead to enhanced economic growth. Our Granger causality tests confirm a bi-directional relationship between national intellectual capital and the shadow economy. As a result, policies targeted to reduce the shadow economy size can now include the accumulation of national intellectual capital, particularly for Southeast Asian Countries.

RESUMO

While investigating a giraffe's death in a Vietnamese zoo, we successfully identified and isolated Lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) from skin nodule biopsies and ruptured nodule wound swab samples. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that the isolate obtained in this study was closely related to the previous Vietnamese and Chinese LSDV strains from cattle. This is the first report on the genome detection and isolation of LSDV in a diseased giraffe in Vietnam. Further study is needed to better understand the epidemiology of this disease in wildlife.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, many studies have focused on the intestinal environment to elucidate pathogenesis of various diseases, including kidney diseases. Impairment of the intestinal barrier function, the "leaky gut," reportedly contributes to pathologic processes in some disorders. Mitochondrial antiviral signaling protein (MAVS), a component of innate immunity, maintains intestinal integrity. The effects of disrupted intestinal homeostasis associated with MAVS signaling in diabetic kidney disease remains unclear. METHODS: To evaluate the contribution of intestinal barrier impairment to kidney injury under diabetic conditions, we induced diabetic kidney disease in wild-type and MAVS knockout mice through unilateral nephrectomy and streptozotocin treatment. We then assessed effects on the kidney, intestinal injuries, and bacterial translocation. RESULTS: MAVS knockout diabetic mice showed more severe glomerular and tubular injuries compared with wild-type diabetic mice. Owing to impaired intestinal integrity, the presence of intestine-derived Klebsiella oxytoca and elevated IL-17 were detected in the circulation and kidneys of diabetic mice, especially in diabetic MAVS knockout mice. Stimulation of tubular epithelial cells with K. oxytoca activated MAVS pathways and the phosphorylation of Stat3 and ERK1/2, leading to the production of kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1). Nevertheless, MAVS inhibition induced inflammation in the intestinal epithelial cells and KIM-1 production in tubular epithelial cells under K. oxytoca supernatant or IL-17 stimulation. Treatment with neutralizing anti-IL-17 antibody treatment had renoprotective effects. In contrast, LPS administration accelerated kidney injury in the murine diabetic kidney disease model. CONCLUSIONS: Impaired MAVS signaling both in the kidney and intestine contributes to the disrupted homeostasis, leading to diabetic kidney disease progression. Controlling intestinal homeostasis may offer a novel therapeutic approach for this condition.
