RESUMO

Given that the basic mechanism of the effect of Helicobacter (H.) pylori in the induction of atherosclerosis remains unknown and regarding the regulatory role of micro RNAs (miRNAs) in endothelial cell (EC) functions, we aimed to investigate the effect of H. pylori on the expression of miRNAs involved in atherosclerosis (atheromiRs) and their correlation with apoptosis in human umbilical vein EC (HUVEC). HUVECs were treated with different cytotoxin associated gene A (CagA) positive and negative H. pylori derived products, then the levels of apoptosis and miR-21, 92a, 155 and 663 were measured using flowcytometry and real time-PCR methods, respectively. Although, comparing induced apoptosis and necrosis in HUVECs revealed that water extract of CagA+ H. pylori (HpWE) was more potent than CagA- one and H. pylori lipopolysacharide (Hp-LPS), no significant difference was observed between LPS extracted from CagA+ and CagA- strains. Besides, CagA+ HpWE significantly increased the levels of anti-apoptotic miR-21, and inflammatory miRNAs 155 and 663 but not miR-92a. A positive correlation was observed between apoptosis and necrosis and miR-155 as well as the expressions of miR-21 with miR-155 (P=0.024) and miR-663 (P=0.0001). As H. pylori products differentially influenced phenotypic and epigenetic changes in ECs pictured in apoptosis and in the expression of atheromiRs, we suggest that the presence of CagA molecule accompanied by these atheromiRs may act as beneficial biomarkers predicting ECs apoptosis as a sign of plaque rupture.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To determine the anatomical location of the appendix, as it may change during pregnancy. METHODS: In this prospective study conducted from October 1995 to March 1999, 291 women of reproductive age were evaluated for appendix location. They were divided into three groups: group A, 165 women between 37 and 40 weeks of pregnancy who underwent elective cesarean delivery; group B, 26 women between 19 and 39 weeks of gestation with acute appendicitis who underwent appendectomy; and group C (the control group), 100 non-pregnant women with acute appendicitis who underwent appendectomy. Appendix location was considered normal within 2 cm of the McBurney point; otherwise, it was considered to be a position change. RESULTS: In group A, 2 (15%) of 165 women and in group B, 6 (23%) of 26 women had a change in the position of the appendix. In the control group, 17% had change in position. There were no significant differences between group A and B compared with group C. In group B, no relation between height of fundus and point of tenderness was seen. CONCLUSION: Our study did not show that pregnancy changes the location of the appendix.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe some rare cytologic findings in medullary thyroid carcinoma. STUDY DESIGN: Review of the fine needle aspiration smears from 15 cases of medullary thyroid carcinoma that were confirmed on histologic sections. The ages ranged between 31 and 67 years; 10 were female and 5 male. Thirteen were sporadic forms, and two were familial forms. RESULTS: Eight cases were classified as pleomorphic cell type and seven as monomorphic cell type. The smears revealed round, oval, triangular, polygonal and spindle-shaped cells, intracytoplasmic red granules, occasional intranuclear inclusions, amyloid, binucleated and multinucleated cells, and thick, granular chromatin. CONCLUSION: The rare cytologic findings in this study were grape cells, cytoplasmic nippling, elongated cytoplasmic processes, carrot-shaped nuclei, nuclear buddings, mast cell-like cells and a Burkitt's lymphoma-like appearance. These findings were rarely reported before.
