UNLABELLED: Amyloidosis describes a group of diseases characterized by deposition of abnormal fibrous proteins in body organs and soft tissues. This disease complex is classified under the broad headings primary and secondary based on whether or not chronic infections or inflammatory conditions coexist. In addition, localized versus systemic involvement and heredofamilial considerations are used to subclassify amyloidosis. Many primary and secondary amyloid diseases involve the central, peripheral and autonomic nervous systems. This paper will focus on the latest information concerning systemic and localized forms of amyloidosis involving the nervous system with special emphasis on Alzheimer's disease and amyloidosis secondary to spinal cord injury. The roles of the nurse related to diagnosis, patient care, patient and family education and identification of support systems in the community will be covered. Patient care will be discussed from the standpoint of process and outcome criteria for specific nursing diagnoses. OBJECTIVES: 1. Describe the pathophysiological processes of amyloidosis. 2. Relate four aspects of nursing care to nursing diagnoses. 3. List four critical elements to include in patient/family education.

Neurologically impaired and elderly patients who remain in the same position for prolonged periods risk developing pressure sores. The most insidious of these are closed pressure sores. Conservative treatment of closed pressure sores frequently is the only treatment option. However, no systematic method to assess the effectiveness of conservative treatment modalities exists. The purposes of this study were to develop a method for quantifying the area of closed pressure sores by means of sinography and digitometry and to determine the utility of this method for monitoring healing. A convenience sample of 40 veterans with closed pressure sores was selected. Four individuals independently traced 116 regions from 30 sinograms of closed pressure sores from a subsample of ten patients. A fifth individual calculated areas of closed pressure sores in units, using digitometry. Findings and nursing implications will be presented.

During the past 24 months, 35 veterans 55 years of age or older with new spinal cord injuries have been admitted to the Spinal Cord Injury Service at the Veterans Administration Edward Hines, Jr. Hospital, Hines, Ill. Treatment and rehabilitation of these elderly spinal cord-injured (SCI) veterans present problems different from those of younger veterans. Case presentations identify problems related to older veterans with new spinal cord injuries. Implications for nurses are identified. Recommendations are made concerning the need to develop collaborative relationships within the hospital and liaison relationships with nurses in community agencies to meet the needs of this population.

A taxonomy of the perceptual domain was proposed over a decade ago. It is hierarchical, as are the taxonomies in the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains. Perception involves extraction of information from presenting stimuli, and there is progression of information extraction as the hierarchy is ascended. Perceptual performance at the higher levels of the taxonomy assumes perceptual abilities at the lower levels. A modified version of the perceptual taxonomy applicable to allied health education is presented. Methods concerning application of the taxonomy are suggested. Use of the taxonomy of the perceptual domain would help allied health educators plan instruction and evaluate teaching.
