RESUMO

The nature of the electronic state of a metal depends strongly on its dimensionality. In a system of isolated conducting chains, the Fermi-liquid (quasiparticle) description appropriate for higher dimensions is replaced by the so-called Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid picture characterized by collective excitations of spin and charge. Temperature is often regarded as a viable tuning parameter between states of different dimensionality, but what happens once thermal broadening becomes comparable to the interchain hopping energy remains an unresolved issue, one that is central to many organic and inorganic conductors. Here we use the ratio of the thermal to electrical conductivities to probe the nature of the electronic state in PrBa2Cu4O8 as a function of temperature. We find that despite the interchain transport becoming non-metallic, the charge carriers within the CuO chains appear to retain their quasiparticle nature. This implies that temperature alone cannot induce a crossover from Fermi-liquid to Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid behaviour in quasi-one-dimensional metals.

RESUMO

AIMS: The aim of this work was to observe bacteria associated with the spores of Gigaspora margarita, an arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF). METHODS AND RESULTS: First, a direct analysis of DNA from sterilized spores indicated the bacteria belonging to the genus Janthinobacterium. In the second assay, two bacterial strains were isolated by osmosis from protoplasts, which were derived from spores by using two particular enzymes: lysing enzymes and yatalase. After isolation, cultivation and identification by their DNA as performed in the first experiment, the species with the closest relation were Janthinobacterium lividum (KCIGM01) and Paenibacillus polymyxa (KCIGM04) isolated with lysing enzymes and yatalase respectively. Morphologically, J. lividum was Gram negative and oval, while P. polymyxa was also oval, but Gram positive. Both strains had antagonistic effects to the pathogenic fungi Rosellimia necatrix, Pythium ultimum, Fusarium oxysporum and Rhizoctonia solani. In particular, J. lividum was much stronger in this role. However, in phosphorus (P) solubilization P. polymyxa functioned better than J. lividum. CONCLUSIONS: This experiment had revealed two new bacteria species (P. polymyxa and J. lividum), associated with AMF spores, which functioned to suppress diseases and to solubilize P. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: AMF spores could be a useful source for bacterial antagonists to soil-borne diseases and P solubilization.

RESUMO

The anisotropic resistivity of PrBa(2)Cu(4)O(8) has been measured as a function of electron irradiation fluence. Localization effects are observed for extremely small amounts of disorder corresponding to electron mean free paths of order 100 unit cells. Estimates of the localization corrections suggest that this anomalous localization threshold heralds a crossover to a ground state with pronounced one-dimensional character in which conduction electrons become confined to a small cluster of chains.

RESUMO

In the chain compound PrBa2Cu4O8 localization appears simultaneously with a dimensional crossover in the electronic ground state when the scattering rate in the chains exceeds the hopping rate between the chains. Here we report the discovery of a large, transverse magnetoresistance in PrBa2Cu4O8 in the localized regime. This result suggests a novel form of localization whereby electrons retain their metallic (quasi-one-dimensional) character over a microscopic length scale despite the fact that, macroscopically, they exhibit localized (one-dimensional) behavior.

RESUMO

We report nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on the chain Cu sites of PrBa2Cu4O8, a quasi-one-dimensional conductor with a nearly quarter-filled band. The nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 shows a pronounced peak near 100 K caused by fluctuations of electric field gradient. Similar peak was observed for the spin-echo decay rate 1/T2, however, at a different temperature near 50 K. These results and broadening of the NQR spectrum at low temperatures indicate that slow charge fluctuations of either electronic or ionic origin freeze gradually at low temperatures.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of a switch to a filmless image management system on the time required for technologists to produce radiographic images in the emergency department (ED) after controlling for exam difficulty and a variable workload. Time and motion data were collected on patients who had radiographic images taken while being treated in the emergency department over the 3 1/2-year period from April 1997 to November 2000. Event times and demographic data were obtained from the radiology information system, from the hospital information system, from emergency department records, or by observation by research coordinators. Multiple least squares regression analysis identified several independent predictors of the time required for technologists to produce radiographic images. These variables included the level of technologist experience, the number of trauma-alert patient arrivals, and whether a filmless image management system was used (all P <.05). Our regression model explained 22% of the variability in technologist time (R2 Adjusted, 0.22; F = 24.01; P <.0001). The regression model predicted a time saving of 2 to 3 minutes per patient in the elapsed time from notification of a needed examination until image availability because of the implementation of PACS, a delay of 4 to 6 minutes per patient who were imaged by technologists who spent less than 10% of their work assignments within the ED, and a delay of 18 to 27 minutes in radiology workflow because of the arrival of a trauma alert patient. A filmless system decreased the amount of time required to produce radiographs. The arrival of a trauma alert patient delayed radiology workflow in the ED. Inexperienced technologists require 4 to 6 minutes of additional time per patient to complete the same amount of work accomplished by an experienced technologist.

RESUMO

The interchain resistivity of PrBa(2)Cu(4)O(8) has been measured in high magnetic fields up to 30 T. Co-herent interchain transport at low temperatures is destroyed by a large magnetic field applied perpendicular to the CuO chains. Comparisons with quasiclassical transport theory provide strong experimental support for a three-dimensional Fermi-liquid ground state in PrBa(2)Cu(4)O(8), despite extreme anisotropy in its electronic properties and the presence of strong electron correlations.

RESUMO

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: The authors performed this study to investigate the impact of changing from a film-based image interpretation system to one using digital image workstations on the training of radiology residents in the interpretation of radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected during a period when a conventional system of image interpretation with hard-copy images and multiviewers was used and during a period when digital image workstations were used. During each period, it was noted whether the first interpretation of the radiographs was performed by a radiology resident, by an attending radiologist, or as a group effort including both an attending radiologist and a radiology resident(s). In addition, it was noted whether a radiology resident or an attending radiologist dictated the report. RESULTS: The proportion of images first interpreted by the radiology resident alone decreased from 38% (53 of 139) when using the conventional system to 17% (34 of 199) after the switch to interpreting images on the workstations (P = .001). During the film-based period, radiology residents dictated 45% of reports (141 of 312), but during the workstation period, radiology residents dictated only 4% of reports (24 of 667; P = .001). CONCLUSION: The authors observed a decrease in autonomous participation by radiology residents in image interpretation and dictation of reports and an increase in "group reading" after the switch from a film-based system to a workstation system.

RESUMO

A sensitive and selective liquid chromatographic (LC) assay was developed to determine the concentration of pyrimethamine in animal tissue and egg by fluorescent derivative. Animal samples were extracted with acetonitrile, centrifuged, and purified by hexane. Fluorescent derivatization was performed by reacting pyrimethamine with chloroacetaldehyde and subjected to LC with fluorescence detection (excitation wavelength 300 nm, emission wavelength 420 nm). The limit of detection was 10 ng/g (10 ppb) and the standard calibration curve was linear in the range of 1-100 ppb (0.01-1 ng/10 microL). Recoveries from samples fortified at levels of 0.1 and 1 ppm (microg/g) were 61.0-77.4 and 65.5-81.2%, respectively. The method was applied to the monitoring of marketed samples. Pyrimethamine was not determined in any of the 70 samples: 20 swine muscle; 20 chicken muscle; 10 chicken liver; and 20 egg.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to report the sonographic appearance of focal thyroid nodules that prove to be lymphocytic thyroiditis on fine-needle aspiration. CONCLUSION: In a patient population undergoing sonography for palpable nodular disease without known thyroiditis, focal nodules of thyroiditis had a wide variety of appearances. They most commonly appeared as solid hyperechoic nodules with ill-defined margins. However, the echogenicity was variable, and calcification and cystic-appearing regions were also noted. The vascularity of these nodules as assessed with color Doppler and power Doppler sonography also varied widely. Biopsy of these lesions is still necessary because there are no sonographic features that can reliably diagnose these lesions as thyroiditis and differentiate them from other lesions.

RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to determine if the interval between an examination being ordered by an Emergency Department physician and his or her review of the report and images could be shortened by notifying the physician that the results were available. This hypothesis was based on work done previously in the Medical Intensive Care Unit that showed that physicians would wait to review results for a time considerably longer than the time required for the radiologist to review the images and provide a preliminary report. The software developments operate properly and show that even simple integration of multiple information systems (PACS, RIS, speech recognition) can provide useful features. Early results indicate that the Emergency Department (ED) physicians prefer the notification system over the previous (travel to check on images and reports) methods. The hypothesized time reductions did occur, although it is not clear that the notification system accounted for all of them. A system for automated notification of radiology results availability has been shown to be possible and practical. To do this automated interaction of 3 systems with a low-level or no electronic integration was required. Although not fully successful for this study, early physician response has been positive, and requests to expand this service hospitalwide now are common.

RESUMO

We compare the angle-resolved photoemission spectra of the hole-doped Cu-O chains in PrBa2Cu3O7 (Pr123) and in PrBa2Cu4O8 (Pr124). While, in Pr123, a dispersive feature from the chain takes a band maximum at k(b) (momentum along the chain) approximately pi/4 and loses its spectral weight around the Fermi level, it reaches the Fermi level at k(b) approximately pi/4 in Pr124. Although the chains in Pr123 and Pr124 are approximately 1/4 filled, they show contrasting behaviors: While the chains in Pr123 have an instability to charge ordering, those in Pr124 avoid it and show an interesting spectral feature of a metallic coupled-chain system.

RESUMO

This study was performed to evaluate the changes in workflow and efficiency in various clinical settings in the radiology department after the introduction of a picture archiving and communication system (PACS). Time and motion data were collected when conventional image management was used, and again after the introduction of a PACS. Changes in the elapsed time from examination request until the image dispatch to the radiologist, and from dispatch until report dictation, were evaluated. The relationship between patient volume and throughput was evaluated. The time from examination request until dispatch was significantly longer after the introduction of PACS for examinations taken on patients from the emergency department (ED) (pre-PACS, 20 minutes; post-PACS, 25 minutes; P < .0001), and for examinations taken on patients in the medical intensive care unit (MICU) (pre-PACS, 34 minutes; post-PACS, 42 minutes; P < .0001). The interval from image dispatch until report dictation shortened significantly after the introduction of PACS in the ED (pre-PACS, 38 minutes; post-PACS, 23 minutes; P < .0001) and in the outpatient department (OPD) (pre-PACS, 38 minutes; post-PACS, 20 minutes; P < .0001). Simple least squares regression showed a significant relationship between daily patient volume and the daily median time until report dictation (F = 43.42, P < .001). PACS slowed technologists by prolonging the quality-control procedure. Radiologist workflow was shortened or not affected. Efficiency is dependent on patient volume, and workflow improvements are due to a shift from batch to on-line reading that is enabled by the ability of PACS to route enough examinations to keep radiologists fully occupied.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess whether variables such as unit occupancy and aggregate severity of illness that reflect increased work demands on physicians in medical intensive care units (MICU) are associated with increased delays in their obtaining information about nonroutine chest radiographic examinations. To determine whether the presence of a picture archiving and communication system (PACS) workstation in the MICU shortens those delays. DESIGN: A prospective cohort study stratified for presence or absence of PACS. SETTING: MICU of a university hospital. PATIENTS: A total of 118 patients admitted to the MICU who had nonroutine bedside chest radiographs. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Multivariate analyses were conducted to determine how unit occupancy, patient acuity, the time of day the examination was taken, and the presence of a PACS workstation influenced the time from radiographic examination completion to the time when MICU physicians first obtained image information. In a multivariate analysis, patient acuity, unit occupancy, the aggregate level of severity of illness in the study cohort, whether the examination was taken at night or day, and the presence of a PACS workstation were significant predictors of the elapsed time from examination completion until review by MICU physicians. Without the PACS workstation, higher occupancy, higher aggregate severity of illness, and examinations taken during the day were associated with longer delays. Overall, the multivariate analysis showed a 24-min decrease in the elapsed time to obtain information during periods with the PACS workstation compared with periods without the workstation (p = .03). CONCLUSIONS: A PACS workstation significantly decreased the delays in obtaining image information that occurred with high unit occupancy and high aggregate severity of illness and may improve unit efficiency under conditions of high physician workload.

RESUMO

A procedure was developed to determine nosiheptide residues in marketed meat and egg. Acetonitrile was used for the extraction, and the extract was partitioned with hexane to remove fat. The lower layer was reconstructed and quantitated by liquid chromatography using fluorescence detection at 357 nm excitation and 500 nm emission. The mobile phase consisted of 0.025% phosphoric acid-acetonitrile (50 + 50, v/v). Recoveries of nosiheptide from fortified samples ranged from 91.3 to 95.2% for swine muscle, 88.6 to 92.7% for chicken muscle, and 86.3 to 86.8% for egg. The method was used to monitor swine and chicken muscle and egg (20 samples each) in the market. Nosiheptide was not determined in all 60 samples.

RESUMO

The optical spectra of PrBa2Cu4O8 show large in-plane anisotropy. For the a polarization (E perpendicular chain), the spectrum is characterized by a gap of 1.4 eV, indicating the charge-transfer insulating nature of the CuO2 planes. For the metallic chain direction (E // b), the spectrum deviates from a simple Drude response; reflectivity R(b)(omega) shows a sharp edge at approximately 1 eV but it also shows a dip at approximately 15 meV, which splits the conductivity spectrum into two parts--a zero-energy mode with small weight and a pronounced 40 meV mode. These features are discussed in terms of a Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid in a doped 1D Mott insulator and compared with 1D Bechgaard salts.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to determine if normal and abnormal pregnancies could be distinguished at smaller sac sizes with a higher frequency transvaginal transducer than with a 5-MHz transducer. SUBJECTS AND MATERIALS: Thirty-nine patients with potentially abnormal pregnancies identified with a 5-MHz transvaginal transducer were immediately reimaged with a 9-5-MHz transducer. We compared our ability to visualize the yolk sac, embryo, and cardiac activity relative to mean sac diameter on imaging at both frequencies in women with normal and abnormal pregnancies. RESULTS: Of the 39 pregnancies, 22 (56%) were normal or probably normal. Using the 5-MHz transducer, a yolk sac was first seen in a 6.4-mm gestational sac but was not definitively seen in 12 gestational sacs measuring 5-13 mm. Using the 9-5-MHz transducer, yolk sacs were identified in all gestational sacs measuring 4.6-13 mm, and live embryos were seen in five of eight sacs measuring 8.1-13 mm. The largest normal gestational sac without a live embryo measured 11 mm. When we compared these pregnancies with 17 (44%) abnormal pregnancies, we found that all pregnancies that had no yolk sac by the time the gestational sac measured 5.0 mm or no live embryo by 13 mm had abnormal findings on higher frequency imaging. CONCLUSION: The ability to visualize the yolk sac and embryo in early pregnancy is critically dependent on transvaginal transducer frequency. Threshold values and discriminatory sizes used to distinguish normal and abnormal pregnancies are smaller on higher frequency than on lower frequency imaging and, therefore, should be redetermined for specific transducer frequencies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of the study was to develop quantitative and qualitative criteria for diagnosing fatty liver on contrast-enhanced helical CT. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Differential liver-spleen attenuation was evaluated between 80 and 120 sec after injection in 76 patients who underwent contrast-enhanced helical CT. Unenhanced CT images had earlier established fatty liver when the liver minus spleen attenuation difference was less than or equal to -10 H (n = 18). Four observers who had not seen the unenhanced images used contrast-enhanced CT images to assess the presence of fatty liver on a five-point Likert scale, the presence of geographic areas spared from fatty infiltration, and the relative liver-spleen attenuation. The diagnostic accuracies of various imaging criteria were compared using McNemar's chi-square test (for sensitivity and specificity) and analysis of receiver operating characteristic curves. RESULTS: Sensitivity, specificity, and receiver operating characteristic curve areas for observers' qualitative judgments were 54%, 95%, and .91, respectively; for quantitative differential liver-spleen attenuation (80-100 sec; -20.5 H discriminatory value), the values were 86%, 87%, and .94, respectively; and for quantitative differential liver-spleen attenuation (101-120 sec; -18.5 H discriminatory value), the values were 93%, 93%, and .98, respectively. Differential liver-spleen attenuation was time-dependent; overlap was noted between healthy subjects and patients with fatty liver. Qualitatively, geographic sparing was highly specific (94%) for fatty liver, whereas liver attenuation greater than or equal to spleen attenuation excluded fatty liver in all but one case. CONCLUSION: Although quantitative and qualitative criteria for diagnosing fatty liver on helical CT can be determined, they are protocol-specific. Limited unenhanced hepatic CT remains the optimal technique for detection of fatty infiltration of the liver.
