RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To compare narrative therapy (NT) plus escitalopram versus escitalopram plus usual care on quality of life and depressive symptomatology of depressed patients with oncologic disease. METHODS: A total of 72 subjects (mean age 54.6 years), predominantly female with non-metastatic breast, lung and colon cancer and depressive disorder (DSM-IV-TR) were randomized to receive treatment with NT plus escitalopram (n=39) or escitalopram (10-20 mg QD) plus usual care (n=33). Main endpoints were improvement in dimensions of quality of life measured by the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire C-30 and reduction of depressive symptoms using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale at weeks 12 and 24. RESULTS: The combined therapy group showed significantly greater improvement in all the functioning dimensions (p<0.01), pain scale (p=0.02), global health (p=0.02), and global quality of life (p=0.007) at weeks 12 and 24. There were no statistically significant differences in depressive symptomatology between the groups. From week 12 to week 24 study retention was higher in the combined treatment group (p=0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Brief NT in combination with escitalopram was superior to usual care and escitalopram in improving functioning dimensions of quality life.

RESUMO

This supplementary issue of Applied Cancer Research is dedicated to the scientific works presented at the XIII Pathology Meeting of the Hospital A. C. Camargo, São Paulo / III International Meeting on Investigative Pathology. This annual event has an ever-growing acceptance among surgical pathologists, residents in Pathology and students, but has increasingly become a meeting of researchers in the field of Investigative and Molecular Oncopathology. This development has prompted the Organizing Committee to call for research abstracts, which have been selected by a panel of experts in the field. All abstracts presented in this issue are representative of the highest quality biomedical research in Brazil, as six of them received a high score by the reviewers and were selected for oral presentation (these abstracts are presented in a separate section). The scientific program is also presented here, in which a distinguished faculty of international and Brazilian speakers is to be noted. Among them, the Nobel Prize of Medicine-2008, Prof. Dr. Harald zur Hausen, from the German Center for Cancer Research - Heidelberg; Bharat Jasani, University of Cardiff, Walles, UK; John Bartlett, University of Edinburgh, Scotland, UK; Sherif Zaki, CDC, Atlanta, USA; David Dabbs, University of Magee, USA; Mark Wick, University of Virginia, USA; Merdol Ibrahim, University College London, London, UK; Craig Allred, Washington University School of Medicine, USA, and Anais Malpica, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, USA. The organizers expect that this event will substantially contribute to the in-depth discussion of the subjects presented, and to the development of new research fields, with creation of multidisciplinary and multi-institutional collaboration groups, all for the benefit of oncologic patients (Editor)
