RESUMO

Background: The cytosolic DNA sensor cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) plays critical functions in innate immune responses via the production of the second messenger cyclic guanosine monophosphate-adenosine monophosphate (cGAMP), which stimulates the adaptor stimulator of interferon genes (STING). However, the clinical relevance and prognostic value of the cGAS-STING pathway in human cancers remains largely unexplored. Methods: A gene signature related to the cGAS-STING score was identified. The pan-cancer landscape of cGAS-STING expression was calculated using the RNAseq data acquired from the TCGA cohort. Tumor-infiltrating immune cells (TIICs) were determined by the ssGSEA method. Kaplan-Meier curves, Cox regression analyses, and the area under the curve (AUC) were employed to decipher the predictive value of cGAS-STING risk score and TIICs across several human cancers. Results: Most tumor tissues displayed a higher cGAS-STING score compared with their corresponding nontumor tissues, except for prostate adenocarcinoma (PRAD) and uterine corpus endometrial carcinoma (UCEC). Higher cGAS-STING score was closely associated with poor clinical outcome of kidney renal clear cell carcinoma (KIRC) and kidney renal papillary cell carcinoma (KIRP), whereas the cGAS-STING score predicted a better prognosis in pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma (PCPG). Enrichment analysis showed that cGAS-STING was profoundly implicated in diverse immune-related pathways in KIRC, KIRP, and PCPG. Significant positive correlations were noticed between cGAS-STING score and TIICs, including activated CD8+ T cells, activated CD4+ T cells, monocytes, and mast cells. Finally, the cGAS-STING score was revealed to be an independent prognostic factor for KIRC patients and possessed a strong predictive power for the prognostic evaluation of KIRC and KIRP patients. Conclusions: We constructed a cGAS-STING gene signature to predict survival and tumor immunity across human cancers, which can serve as a novel prognostic indicator and therapeutic target, especially in KIRC and KIRP.

BACKGROUND: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) -induced adverse events (AEs) have been reported affecting almost all human organs. However, studies about ocular AEs are few. A meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the risks of ICI-related ophthalmic AEs compare to chemotherapy.Methods: Eligible studies were selected from phase II/III randomized controlled trials investigating ICIs. The data were analyzed by R software and Stata. RESULTS: Odds ratio of treatment-related AE (trAEs) and nonspecific ophthalmic trAEs (NS-trAEs) were lower for PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors than chemotherapy (OR 0.44, p < .05; OR 0.28, p < .001; OR 0.18, p < . 05; OR: 0.18, p < .001respectively). Compared with monotherapy, PD-1 plus CTLA-4 inhibitors increased the risks of immune-related AEs (irAEs) (OR 4.52, p < .01); ICIs plus chemotherapy increased the risks of trAEs and irAEs (OR 2.82, p < .001; OR 3.63, p < .05 respectively). CONCLUSIONS: PD-L1/PD-1 inhibitors had lower risks of trAEs and NS-trAEs than chemotherapy; Compared with monotherapy, combination therapy had higher risks of ophthalmic trAEs and irAEs. BACKGROUND: The prevalence of overweight/obesity in adults is raised to 39%, which is nearly tripled more than 1975. The alteration of the gut microbiome has been widely accepted as one of the main causal factors. To find an effective strategy for the prevention and treatment of overweight/obesity, a systematic review and meta-analysis were designed. METHODS: In this study, we systematically reviewed the article published from January 2008 to July 2018 and conducted a meta-analysis to examine the effects of probiotics on body weight control, lipid profile, and glycemic control in healthy adults with overweight or obesity. The primary outcomes were body weight, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, fat mass, fat percentages, plasma lipid profiles, and glucose metabolic parameters. RESULTS: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase, and the Web of Science and identified 1248 articles, and 7 articles which were manually searched by the references of included studies and previously systematic reviews. Twelve randomized controlled trials (RCTs), including 821 participants, were included in the meta-analysis via full-text screening. Probiotics supplementation resulted in a statistical reduction in body weight (WMD [95% CI]; -0.55 [-0.91, -0.19] kg), BMI (WMD [95% CI]; -0.30 [-0.43, -0.18] kg m-2), waist circumference (WMD [95% CI]; -1.20 [-2.21, -0.19] cm), fat mass (WMD [95% CI]; -0.91 [-1.19, -0.63] kg), and fat percentage (WMD [95% CI]; -0.92 [-1.27, -0.56] %) compared with control groups. As expected, the metabolic parameters were improved significantly, with a pooled standardized mean difference in TC (SMD [95% CI]; -0.43 [-0.80, -0.07]), LDL-C (SMD [95% CI]; -0.41 [-0.77, -0.04]), FPG (SMD [95% CI]; -0.35 [-0.67, -0.02]), insulin (SMD [95% CI]; -0.44 [-0.84, -0.03]), and HOMA-IR (SMD [95% CI]; -0.51 [-0.96, -0.05]), respectively. The changes in TG (SMD [95% CI]; 0.14 [-0.23, 0.50]), HDL-C (SMD [95% CI]; -0.31 [-0.70, 0.07]), and HbA1c (SMD [95% CI]; -0.23 [-0.46, 0.01]) were not significant. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that the probiotics supplementation could potentially reduce the weight gain and improve some of the associated metabolic parameters, which may become an effective strategy for the prevention and treatment of obesity in adult individuals.

Background: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the risk of pneumonitis and pneumonia associated with immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for solid tumors. Methods: The following keywords were used in searching the Embase and PubMed database: pneumonitis, pneumonia, and immune checkpoint inhibitors. The data was analyzed by using the R software and Metafor package. Results: Among 3,436 studies, 23 randomized clinical trials (RCTs) met our selection criteria which included data from 12,876 patients. Compared with chemotherapy, PD-1 inhibitors showed significant increase in grade 1-5 and grade 3-5 pneumonitis (RR, 5.17, 95% CI: 2.82-9.47, p < 0.001; RR, 4.14, 95% CI: 1.82-9.42, p < 0.001), but not in pneumonia. PD-L1 inhibitors showed significant increase in grade 1-5 pneumonitis and pneumonia (RR, 3.25, 95% CI: 1.61-6.57, p < 0.001; RR, 2.11, 95% CI: 1.20-3.70, p < 0.001). There was no significant difference in any grade pneumonitis and pneumonia in cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA4) inhibitors subgroup. Programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) inhibitor (nivolumab and pembrolizumab) both showed significant increase in grade 1-5 pneumonitis, and pembrolizumab specially tended to increase grade 3-5 pneumonitis. (RR, 5.64 95% CI: 1.94-16.38, p < 0.001). Compared with PD-1 inhibitor (nivolumab) or CTLA-4 inhibitor (ipilimumab) monotherapy, PD-1 inhibitor, and CTLA-4 inhibitor (nivolumab plus ipilimumab) combination therapies showed significant increase in grade 1-5 and grade 3-5 pneumonitis (RR 3.47, 95%CI:1.76-6.83, p < 0.001; RR 3.48, 95%CI: 1.10-11.02, p < 0.001). Conclusions: PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitors treatment could increase the risk of all-grade pneumonitis. CTLA4 inhibitor ipilimumab treatment alone could not increase the risk of pneumonitis but could augment the risk of pneumonitis in PD-1/PD-L1 inhibitor treated patients. There was no significant increase in the risk of pneumonia after either PD-1/PDL-1inhibitor or CTLA4 inhibitor treatment alone or in combination.

We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the risk of immune-related pancreatitis associated with the treatment by immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) for solid tumors. Eligible studies were selected from multiple databases including phase II/III randomized controlled trials (RCTs) with ICIs in solid tumor patients. The data were analyzed with Stata version 12.0 software. After excluding ineligible studies, a total of 15 clinical trials were considered eligible for the meta-analysis, which included 9099 patients. Compared with chemotherapy or placebo, the risk ratio (RR) for all-grade lipase elevation after CTLA-4 inhibitor treatment was 1.05 (95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01-2.24, p = 0.047). However, the risk for pancreatitis after ICI treatment in any subgroup was not significantly higher than that after control therapy. In addition, compared with ipilimumab/nivolumab alone, the RR for all-grade and high-grade lipase elevation under combination treatment of nivolumab and ipilimumab was 6.43 (95% CI: 1.43-28.99, p = 0.015) and 6.44 (95% CI: 1.39-29.79, p = 0.017), respectively, and the RR for all-grade amylase elevation under combination treatment was 6.08 (95% CI: 1.51-24.44, p = 0.011). Our meta-analysis has demonstrated that both CTLA-4 inhibitors alone and combination treatment of nivolumab and ipilimumab could increase the risk of amylase or lipase elevation, but not significantly increase the risk of pancreatitis when compared with controls.

BACKGROUND: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to evaluate the risk of immune-related endocrine disorders associated with PD-1 inhibitors therapy for solid tumors. METHODS: An Embase and PubMed search through December 6, 2017, using the following keywords was performed: immune-related endocrine disorders, and PD-1 inhibitors, etc. The data were analyzed using R 3.4.3 (R Project) and the metafor package. Patients treated with chemotherapy alone were used as control for the purpose of comparison. RESULTS: A total of 12 clinical trials including 5577 patients were found eligible for the meta-analysis. Compared with chemotherapy, the risk ratios of all-grade endocrine disorders are 13.89, (95% CI: 5.35-36.05, p < 0.001) for nivolumab therapy, and 9.85, (95% CI: 5.65-17.17, p < 0.001) for pembrolizumab therapy. The risk of all-grade hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism incidence was increased for nivolumab therapy (hypothyroidism: RR 10.07, 95% CI: 3.37-30.11, p < 0.001; hyperthyroidism: RR 4.29, 95% CI: 1.13-16.30, p = 0.034) and for pembrolizumab therapy (hypothyroidism: RR 7.73, 95% CI: 3.86-15.49, p < 0.001; hyperthyroidism: RR 5.09, 95% CI: 2.36-10.97, p < 0.001). There was a significant increase in the risk of grade 1-5 endocrine disorders incidence for ipilimumab-nivolumab combination therapy (versus ipilimumab, RR 3.20, 95% CI: 2.08-4.91, p < 0.001; versus nivolumab, RR 2.54, 95% CI: 1.70-3.80, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Both nivolumab and pembrolizumab therapy could result in a higher risk of all-grade immune-related endocrine disorders than chemotherapy. Nivolumab and ipilimumab combination therapy could result in an even higher risk of all-grade immune-related endocrine disorders than ipilimumab or nivolumab alone. Awareness of these side effects could guide clinicians to better manage the patients treated with anti-PD-1 inhibitors therapy for solid tumors.

In our previous study, the upregulation of adipophilin in lung adenocarcinoma were identified compared with normal lung tissues by quantitative proteomics. In this study, our aim was to verify the result from quantitative proteomics, further investigate the relationship between adipophilin expression and clinicopathologic factors of lung cancer patients. The expression levels of adipophilin were examined in 10 pairs of lung adenocarcinoma and normal lung tissues using western blotting and the expression and cellular distribution of adipophilin were determined by IHC in 62 formalin-fixed and paraffin embedded primary lung cancer specimens. Adipophilin expression was significantly higher in lung adenocarcinoma specimens than in normal tissues and lung squamous cell carcinomas (P<0.05). There were no significant difference of adipophilin expression between lung squamous cell carcinomas and normal lung tissues. The expression of adipophilin in lung cancer did not correlate with any clinicopathologic factors such as lymph node metastasis, patients' age, gender, tumor size, grade, and TNM stage. In Conclusion, Adipophilin was upregulated in lung adenocarcinoma, suggesting that adipophilin play an important role in tumorigenesis of lung adenocarcinoma and may serve as a potential marker for lung adenocarcinoma.

The aim of this study was to analyze the risk factors and prognosis for patients with esophageal perforation occurring during or after radiotherapy for esophageal carcinoma. We retrospectively analyzed 322 patients with esophageal carcinoma. These patients received radiotherapy for unresectable esophageal tumors, residual tumors after operation, or local recurrence. Of these, 12 had radiotherapy to the esophagus before being admitted, 68 patients had concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT), and 18 patients had esophageal perforation after RT (5.8%). Covered self-expandable metallic stents were placed in 11 patients. Two patients continued RT after stenting and control of infection; one of these suffered a new perforation, and the other had a massive hemorrhage. The median overall survival was 2 months (0-3 months) compared with 17 months in the non-perforation group. In univariate analysis, the Karnofsky performance status (KPS) being ≤ 70, age younger than 60, T4 stage, a second course of radiotherapy to the esophagus, extracapsular lymph nodes (LN) involving the esophagus, a total dose >100 Gy (biologically effective dose-10), and CRT were risk factors for perforation. In multivariate analysis, age younger than 60, extracapsular LN involving the esophagus, T4 stage, and a second course of radiotherapy to the esophagus were risk factors. In conclusion, patients with T4 stage, extracapsular LN involving the esophagus, and those receiving a second course of RT should be given particular care to avoid perforation. The prognosis after perforation was poor.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the clinical outcomes of simultaneous modulated accelerated radiotherapy (SMART) in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). A total of 97 patients who underwent SMART for NPC between August 2005 and November 2011 were evaluated. The prescribed dose was 69.9 Gy/30 fractions at 2.33 Gy/fraction to the primary gross tumor volume (PGTV) including the nasopharynx gross target volume and the positive neck lymph nodes, and 60 Gy/30 fraction at 2.0 Gy/fraction to the PCTV1; 54 Gy/30 fractions at 1.8 Gy/fraction was given to the PCTV2. Among 59 patients with local advanced disease, 31 patients received concurrent chemoradiotherapy (chemo-RT) with a regimen consisting of 135 mg/m(2) paclitaxel on Day 1 and 25 mg/m(2) cisplatin on Days 1-3. The median follow-up period was 42 months. The local control rate (LCR), distant metastases-free survival (DMFS) and overall survival (OS) rates were 93.3%, 90.3% and 91.6% at 3 years, and 87.6%, 87.9% and 85.7% at 5 years, respectively. There was no significant difference in outcome with respect to these three indicators for Stage III and IV disease treated with/without concurrent chemoradiotherapy (P > 0.05). Acute toxicities included Grade 3 mucositis, skin desquamation, and leucopenia, which occurred in 78 (80.4%), 8 (8.2%), and 45 (46.4%) patients, respectively. No patient had a Grade 3-4 late toxicity. SMART was associated with a favorable outcome for NPC with acceptable toxicity. The local-regional control was excellent but distant metastasis remains the main risk. The combination of SMART and chemotherapy needs to be optimized through further studies to enhance outcomes for locally advanced diseases.

Recently, the main therapy of medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) is surgical, but by which way there is a poor prognosis with a mean survival of only 5 years. In some cases, some researchers found that it is the medullary thyroid cancer stem cells (MTCSCs) that cause metastasis and recurrence. This study aimed to eradicate MTCSCs through administration of all-trans-retinoic acid (ATRA). Here we demonstrate that MTCSCs possess stem- like properties in serum-free medium. The ABCG2, OCT4 and sodium iodide symporter (NIS) were changed by ATRA. Additionally, we found that ATRA can increase the expression of NIS in vivo. All the data suggested that ATRA could increase the iodine uptake of MTCSCs through NIS.

PURPOSE: To analyze the effectiveness and toxicities in the re-irradiation of locally recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) using intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT). METHODS: This is a retrospective analysis of 54 NPC patients with local recurrence re-irradiated with IMRT. The re-staging for rT1, rT2, rT3, rT4 were 3 (5.6%), 8 (14.8%), 9 (16.7%), 34 (63%) respectively. The average dose to GTV was 69.95 Gy (49.8-76.58 Gy), the average BED(3Gy) was 116.8 Gy (83.5-127.9 Gy). V95 was 96%, and D95 was 65.75 Gy. 33.3% of them received concurrent chemoradiotherapy. RESULTS: Median overall survival (OS) was 21 months (1-93 mon). The 1-, 2-year local progression free survival (LPFS) rate was 84.5%, 64% and OS rate was 71.7%, 44.3%. Severe late adverse events (SLAE) occurred in 48.1% of patients, including 31.5% with ulcer or necrosis of the nasopharyngeal mucosa, 20.4% with difficulty in feeding, 18.5% with temporal lobe necrosis, 11.1% with massive hemorrhage. 15.4% died of local regional progression, 5.8% died of distant metastasis, 25% died of SLAE, 9.6% died of both local regional progression and SLAE that could not be differentiated, 5.8% died of other medical complications. Concurrent chemoradiotherapy was the independent negative prognostic factors for LPFS; PTV>100 ml was a predictive factor of poor OS; patients with invasion of post-styloid space were at higher risk of SLAE. CONCLUSIONS: The present study demonstrated that IMRT with 70Gy was efficient for local tumor control. However, we observed a high frequency of serious late complications. More optimized combination treatment and patient selection are required to achieve excellent local control without significant late morbidities in locally recurrent NPC.

RESUMO

The present study reports the case of a 53-year-old male who had been suffering from coughing and the presence of a blood-streaked sputum for >1 month. Chest computed tomography (CT) and a bronchoscopic brush smear were performed. The patient was subsequently diagnosed with small cell lung cancer (limited stage). The patient developed polyarthritis, abdominal pain, diarrhea and a purpuric rash at 14 days post thoracotomy surgery for lung cancer. Henoch-Schönlein purpura (HSP) was diagnosed based on the clinical symptoms. The patient received chemotherapy with steroid therapy, which resulted in complete remission of the HSP.

The purpose of this investigation was to analyze the correlation between CT size and gross pathologic size for subjects with primary hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This analysis included 174 patients with HCC who underwent surgery. Enhanced computed tomography (CT) was performed up to 30 days before surgery. After resection, the size of the tumor on gross pathologic examination was recorded. The maximal measurement in one dimension on axial imaging and pathologic examination was extracted for statistical analysis. The clinical and pathologic sizes were compared using a percent size difference (%Δsize) as an end point. A regression analysis was applied to study the association between pathologic and radiographic size. The median radiographic and pathologic size were 70.58 ± 38.9 mm and 68.59 ± 40.56 mm, respectively. The radiographic size was larger than or equal to the pathologic size in 110/174 tumors (63.2%), and smaller in 64/174 (36.8%) tumors. Overall, the radiographic and pathologic sizes were positively correlated (r = 0.983, P = 0.000). CT seemed to overestimate the tumor size by 2.16 mm compared to final pathology (P = 0.024). The median %Δsize was 3.3%. Pathologic tumor size was significantly underestimated in patients with a tumor size 3-5 cm (P = 0.011), Grade I HCC (P = 0.023), with clear boundary (P = 0.013). We concluded that CT size and pathologic size were positively correlated, but differences did exist. Utilizing the radiographic tumor when planning radiation would have covered 63.2% of gross tumors. For a radiographic tumor size < 50 mm, utilizing a 3-mm margin around the radiographic tumor would have covered 90% of gross lesions, while a margin of 5 mm would have covered 95%, and a margin of 15 mm would have covered 100%.

INTRODUCTION: Our previous study has demonstrated Cyclosporin A (CsA) promotes the proliferation of human trophoblast cells. Therefore, we further investigate the intracellular signaling pathway involved in the CsA-induced proliferation of human trophoblast cells. METHODS: Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed to evaluate the regulation of CsA on CXCL12 secretion in human trophoblast cells. Immunofluorescence analysis and western blotting analysis were used to investigate the role of CXCL12/CXCR4 axis in the CsA-induced epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) phosphorylation in human trophoblast cells. 5-Bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU) cell proliferation assay was performed to analyze the involvement of EGFR and its downstream extracellular signal-regulated protein kinase (ERK) signaling pathway in the CsA-induced proliferation of human trophoblast cells. RESULTS: Low concentration of CsA promoted the secretion of CXCL12, and recombinant human CXCL12 promoted the phosphorylation of EGFR in primary human trophoblast cells and choriocarcinoma cell line JEG-3. The inhibition of CXCL12 or CXCR4 by either neutralizing antibodies or small interfering RNA (siRNA) could completely block the CsA-induced EGFR phosphorylation. The CsA-induced proliferation of human trophoblast cells was effectively abrogated by the EGFR inhibitor AG1478 as well as the ERK inhibitor U0126, but not by the PI3K/PKB inhibitor LY294002. CsA promoted the activation of ERK in JEG-3 cells, which was markedly abrogated in the presence of CXCL12 siRNA, or CXCR4 siRNA, or AG1478. CONCLUSIONS: CsA may promote EGFR activation via CXCL12/CXCR4 axis, and EGFR downstream ERK signaling pathway may be involved in the CsA-induced proliferation of human trophoblast cells.

Our previous work has demonstrated that cyclosporin A (CsA) up-regulates but CD82 down-regulates the invasiveness of human trophoblasts. In the present study, we further investigated whether CsA can modulate the trophoblasts invasion through regulating the expression of CD82 in decidual stromal cells (DSCs). A co-culture model was established to investigate the effect of CsA on trophoblasts invasiveness. In-cell Western was performed to evaluate the expression of CD82, p53, ß-catenin and the phosphorylation level of NF-κB p50 in DSCs. The secretion of CXCL12 of trophoblasts and DSCs was determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). We found that CsA could not directly change the expression of CD82 in DSCs, but the CsA-treated trophoblasts significantly enhanced CD82 expression, NF-κB p50 phosphorylation and p53 expression, and decreased ß-catenin expression in DSCs, and these effects could be abolished by anti-CXCL12 or CXCR4 neutralizing antibody. In addition, the invasiveness of trophoblast cells was markedly decreased after blocking CXCR4 of trophoblasts. Interestingly, when DSCs were pretreated with anti-CXCR4 neutralizing antibody, the invasiveness of trophoblast cells was enhanced in the coculture unit, and blocking CXCR4 on DSCs could reverse the decrease of trophoblasts invasiveness induced by CD82. Moreover, CsA further amplified these effects mediated by CXCL12 and CD82. Our results suggest that CsA not only promotes the trophoblasts invasiveness through stimulating the secretion of CXCL12, but also limits the invasiveness of trophoblasts by indirectly up-regulating the expression CD82. Therefore, CsA may contribute to the appropriate invasiveness of trophoblasts via strengthening the crosstalk between trophoblasts and DSCs.

RESUMO

Regioselective synthesis of functionalized tetrahydrobenzo[b]pyrans has been developed by multicomponent reactions (MCRs) and tandem [3 + 3] annulations of ß-benzoylthioacetanilides or ß-(2-haloaroyl)thioacetanilides as valuable sources with aromatic aldehydes and 5,5-dimethyl-1,3-cyclohexanedione catalyzed by triethylamine. This MCR followed by a postcondensation cyclization via an intramolecular S(N)Ar in the presence of K(2)CO(3) led to an unprecedented novel chromeno[2,3-b]quinoline framework containing an important chromene moiety in good yields. The reactions were very mild, convenient, and o-selective to form new fused tetracyclic target molecules.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate clinical therapeutic effect and the safety of pricking blood therapy combined with ultraviolet irradiation for treatment of acute herpes zoster. METHODS: One hundred and thirty cases were randomly divided into an observation group and a control group, 65 cases in each group. The observation group was treated with pricking blood therapy combined with ultraviolet irradiation. Firstly, the affected parts were heavily taped with a plum-blossom needle and then cupping. After the cup was removed, with the body surface-dividing field method, ultraviolet irradiation was given at the skin injury area and the nerve root area corresponding to paraspinal vertebra, and the control group was treated with Aciclovir and other western medicine. Seven days constituted one course. Their therapeutic effects and adverse reactions were observed. RESULTS: After treatment of 7 days, the cured rate of 76.9% and the total effective rate of 90.8% in the observation group were significantly higher than 38.5% and 66.2% in the control group, respectively (both P < 0.01); the incidence rate of post herpetic neuralgia of 3.1% in the observation group was significantly lower than 12.3% in the control group (P < 0.05); after treatment, the scores for pain, rash and sleep decreased significantly in the two groups (all P < 0.01), more significantly decreased in the observation group than in the control group (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05); the pain-relieving time, herpes-stopping time, scab-forming time and the cured time in the cured patients of the observation group were significantly shorter than those in the control group (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: The pricking blood therapy combined with ultraviolet irradiation has rapid therapeutic effect, effectively shortens duration of illness, decreases the incidence rate of post herpetic neuralgia and it is a safe remedy for treatment of herpes zoster.

Osteoporosis in men is an increasingly important public health problem. This study was designed to establish bone mineral density (BMD) reference databases for central southern Chinese men at multiple skeletal sites. We recruited 2433 native Chinese males for BMD assessment. Of these, 1537 were healthy volunteers (age range, 15-85 years), and 896 were suspected to have osteoporosis. BMD values were measured at the posteroanterior (PA) and lateral spine, hip, and distal forearm using a Delphi A absorptiometer. The quadratic regression model provided the best fit for age-related changes in BMD in the spine and hip. The cubic regression model was the best for describing age-related BMD changes in the distal forearm. Peak BMD in the lumbar spine, femoral neck, and total hip occurred at 15-19 years. Peak BMD at the distal forearm occurred at 40-44 years. The prevalence of primary osteoporosis in subjects ranging from 50-85 years was 4.3%-27.7% at various skeletal sites. Compared to the databases established here, the Hologic databases led to significantly higher osteoporosis detection rates. The BMD reference databases established for central southern Chinese men provide the most reliable diagnostic standards for osteoporosis detection in men of central south China.
