RESUMO

Along with social, cognitive, and behavior deficiencies, peculiarities in sensory processing, including an atypical global motion processing, have been reported in Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The question about the enhanced motion pooling in ASD is still debatable. The aim of the present study was to compare global motion integration in ASD using a low-density display and the equivalent noise (EN) approach. Fifty-seven children and adolescents with ASD or with typical development (TD) had to determine the average direction of movement of 30 Laplacian-of-Gaussian micro-patterns. They moved in directions determined by a normal distribution with a standard deviation of 2°, 5°, 10°, 15°, 25°, and 35°, corresponding to the added external noise. The data obtained showed that the ASD group has much larger individual differences in motion direction thresholds on external noise effect than the TD group. Applying the equivalent noise paradigm, we found that the global motion direction discrimination thresholds were more elevated in ASD than in controls at all noise levels. These results suggest that ASD individuals have a poor ability to integrate the local motion information in low-density displays.

RESUMO

Green stimuli are more difficult to detect than red stimuli in the retinal periphery, as reported previously. We examined the spatial characteristics of chromatic mechanisms using stimuli, modulated from an achromatic background to each pole of the "red-green" cardinal axis in DKL space at 20 deg eccentricity. The "blue-yellow" cardinal axis was also studied for comparison. By measuring both grating discrimination at the resolution limit (resolution acuity) and spatial summation, assessed by the Michaelis-Menten function, we demonstrated a marked "red-green" asymmetry. The resolution acuity was worse and spatial summation more extended for "green" compared to "red" stimuli, while showing significant individual variations. Ricco's area was also measured, but not determined for "green" spots because of the poor small stimuli detection. These results cannot be explained by differences in L- and M-cone numerosity and/or spatial arrangement, but rather have postreceptoral origin, probably at the cortical level.

RESUMO

Visually evoked potentials (VEPs) were elicited by Gabor gratings with different lengths and widths at three spatial frequencies (SFs): low, 1.45 c/deg, medium, 2.9 c/deg and high, 5.8 c/deg and at a contrast 3 times above the detection threshold at each SF. An increase of grating length enhanced N1 amplitude at occipital and parietal positions stronger than the increase of grating width at aspect ratios (length : width) above 4:1. The stronger effect of stimulus length than width was reflected also in the amplitude of the later P1 component at central and parietal positions. The larger effect of stimulus length than width on the VEP amplitude was SF specific: it was stronger at 5.8 c/deg, smaller at 2.9 c/deg and vanished at 1.45 c/deg. The results obtained suggest anisotropy in the physiological mechanisms that underlie grating perception and involve bottom- up processes initiated in the occipital cortex.
