RESUMO

Superabsorbent resin (SAR) saturated with heavy metals poses a threat to surrounding ecosystem. To promote the reutilization of waste, resins adsorbed by Fe2+ and Cu2+ were carbonized and used as catalysts (Fe@C/Cu@C) to activate persulfate (PS) for 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) degradation. The heterogeneous catalytic reaction was mainly responsible for 2,4-DCP removal. The synergistic effect of Fe@C and Cu@C was propitious to 2,4-DCP degradation. Fe@C/Cu@C with a ratio of 2:1 showed the highest performance of 2,4-DCP removal. 40 mg/L 2,4-DCP was completely removed within 90 min under reaction conditions of 5 mM PS, pH = 7.0 and T = 25 °C. The cooperation of Fe@C and Cu@C facilitated the redox cycling of Fe and Cu species to supply accessible PS activation sites, enhancing ROS generation for 2,4-DCP degradation. Carbon skeleton enhanced 2,4-DCP removal via radical/nonradical oxidation pathways and via its adsorption to 2,4-DCP. SO4˙-, HO˙ and O2•- were the dominate radical species involved in 2,4-DCP destruction. Meanwhile, the possible pathways of 2,4-DCP degradation were proposed based on GC-MS. Finally, recycling tests proved catalysts exhibited recyclable stability. Aiming to resource utilization, Fe@C/Cu@C with satisfactory catalysis and stability, is promising catalyst for contaminated water treatment.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to investigate the management of patients with asymptomatic suspicious thyroid nodules ≤1 cm. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of patients with sonographically suspicious thyroid nodules ≤1 cm and without distant metastases, suspicious lymph node metastasis (LNM), or extrathyroidal extension (ETE). RESULTS: Of the 386 enrolled patients, 174 (45.1%) had immediate surgery (IS), while 212 (54.9%) underwent active surveillance (AS). In the IS group, 166 (95.4%) patients were confirmed as having papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. LNM and ETE were observed in 24.7% and 2.4% cases, respectively. In the AS group, nodule size increased by ≥3 mm in 11 (5.2%) patients and 39 (18.4%) had a >50% increase in nodule volume after a median follow-up of 12 months. Nodules with smaller volume at diagnosis were more likely to increase in volume later. Newly suspicious LNM was detected in 23 (10.8%) patients. Delayed surgery (DS) was performed in 101 patients, with 27 showing disease progression. ETE and LNM were detected in 3% and 36%, respectively, of patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma. Compared with IS, tumors in the DS group more frequently showed lateral LNM and capsular invasion (P < .05). No patient had recurrence or died of thyroid cancer during postoperative follow-up (median 26 [4-60] months). CONCLUSIONS: IS or DS of patients with asymptomatic suspicious thyroid nodules ≤1 cm was relatively high in China. The inertia of low-risk nodules and the effectiveness of DS for those that progressed make AS a feasible strategy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify potential markers for predicting invasion, metastasis, and prognosis of gastric adenocarcinoma (GAC). METHODS: The expressions of Slug, ZEB1 and KISS-1 were detected immunohistochemically in 261 GAC tissues and 80 normal gastric tissues. RESULTS: The positivity rates of Slug, ZEB1, and KISS-1 in gastric tissues were 2.5%, 1.3%, and 87.5%, respectively, significantly different from the rates of 62.1%, 28.4%, and 41.1% in GAC tissues (P<0.05). The expression level of Slug was significantly correlated with the depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis, and pTNM stages; the positivity rates of both ZEB1 and KISS-1 were significantly correlated with the tumor grade, depth of invasion, lymph node metastasis and pTNM stages. Slug expression was positively correlated with ZEB1 expression, and KISS-1 expression was inversely correlated with Slug and ZEB1 expressions. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that the overall survival time of patients with positive expressions of Slug and ZEB1 was significantly shorter than that of the negative patients, and the survival time of patients positive for KISS-1 was significantly longer than the negative patients. COX multivariate analysis showed that positive Slug, ZEB1 and KISS-1 protein expressions and pTNM stages were independent prognostic factors of GAC (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: The abnormal expressions of Slug, ZEB1 and KISS-1 may contribute to the tumorigenesis of GAC and are related with lymph node metastasis, pTNM stages, and prognosis of GAC. The combined detection of Slug, ZEB1, and KISS-1 expression has an important value in predicting the progression and prognosis of GAC.
