RESUMO

Thallium, a highly toxic heavy metal and priority pollutant, has been widely reported to cause neurodevelopmental toxicity in animals. However, accessible epidemiological studies concerning the neurodevelopmental toxicity of early-life thallium exposure in humans are limited. In a prospective birth cohort including 2164 mother-child pairs, we explored the effect of prenatal serum thallium exposure on cognitive development among preschool-aged children born in Ma'anshan, Anhui, China. Serum thallium concentrations were measured in the first trimester, second trimester, third trimester, and cord blood by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Child cognitive development was appraised by the Chinese version of the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV) at 4.5 years old. Multiple informants generalized estimating equations (GEEs) were fit to jointly estimate the association between the four repeated measurements of thallium concentrations and the preschool-aged children's cognitive test scores. After adjusting for potential confounders, the visual spatial index (VSI) was 1.45 points lower in the highest tertile of serum thallium during the first trimester than in the lowest tertile (p for trend = 0.04). Moreover, children in the highest tertile of serum thallium during the third trimester had a significantly lower full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) (ß = -1.51, 95% CI: -2.68, -0.35), VSI (ß = -1.79, 95% CI: -3.16, -0.42), fluid reasoning index (FRI) (ß = -1.41, 95% CI: -2.73, -0.10), and processing speed index (PSI) (ß = -1.47, 95% CI: -2.71, -0.24) scores than the children in the lowest tertile. When performing stratified analysis by child sex, the associations of first- and third-trimester thallium concentrations with cognitive test scores were more prominent in boys than in girls. Our findings revealed that maternal serum thallium exposure during the first and third trimesters, but not other periods, had detrimental effects on preschoolers' cognitive development, and these effects showed sex differences.

RESUMO

Thallium (Tl) is a highly toxic heavy metal that has been suggested to be responsible for oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. However, few studies have focused on the relationship of prenatal Tl exposure with children's neurobehavioural development. The purpose of our study was to investigate the association between prenatal Tl exposure and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms in 36-month-old children. We used data from 2851 mother-newborn pairs from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort Study (MABC); serum Tl concentration was assessed in the first, second and third trimesters of pregnancy as well as in the umbilical cord blood. We assessed ADHD symptoms in the children using the Chinese version of the Conners abbreviated symptom questionnaire (C-ASQ). The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for the risk of ADHD symptoms was 2.00 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.20, 3.32] and 2.08 (95% CI: 1.26, 3.43) for the third (60.25-75.21 ng/L) and fourth quartiles of serum Tl (>75.21 ng/L), respectively, in the second trimester of pregnancy, in comparison with the first quartile of serum Tl (<50.86 ng/L). The risk of ADHD symptoms was elevated among boys exposed to the fourth quartile of serum Tl in the second trimester of pregnancy (adjusted OR 2.08, 95% CI: 1.13, 3.83). Our results demonstrated that high levels of Tl exposure in the second trimester of pregnancy were related to a higher risk of ADHD symptoms in 36-month-old children, and the association of higher serum Tl exposure in the second trimester with ADHD symptoms was only found in boys.

RESUMO

Vascular events are one of the major causes of death in case of Cushing's syndrome (CS). However, due to the relative low frequency of CS, it is hard to perform a risk assessment for these events. As represented congestive heart failure (C), hypertension (H), age (A), diabetes (D), and stroke (S), the CHADS2 score is now accepted to classify the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) in patients with atrial fibrillation. In this study, participants were enrolled from the National Health Research Institute Database (NHIRD) of Taiwan, and we reviewed 551 patients with their sequential clinically diagnosed CS data between 2002 and 2009 in relation to MACEs risk using CHADS2 score. Good correlation could be identified between the CS and CHADS2 score (AUC = 0.795). Our results show that patients with CS show significantly higher risk of vascular events and the CHADS2 score could be applied for MACEs evaluation. Adequate lifestyle modifications and aggressive cardiovascular risks treatment are suggested for CS patients with higher CHADS2 score.

RESUMO

An efficient enantioselective addition of an array of arylboronic acids to various ß-nitrostyrenes catalyzed by a novel and reactive rhodium-diene catalyst (S/C up to 1000) was developed, providing ß,ß-diarylnitroethanes in good to high yields (62-99%) with excellent enantioselectivities (85-97% ee). The method was extended to 2-heteroarylnitroolefins and 2-alkylnitroolefins similarly providing the desired products with high enantioselectivities and yields. The usefulness of this method was demonstrated in the formal synthesis of the enantiomer of the dopamine receptor agonist and antagonist, SKF 38393.

RESUMO

This paper describes the growth of gold and silver nanomaterials from their corresponding colloidal seeds on glass substrates. The glass substrates were treated with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) and then with gold or silver nanoparticle seeds (AuNPSs or AgNPSs) at different concentrations. After separately immersing the thus-prepared MPTMS-AuNPS and MPTMS-AgNPS glass substrates in aqueous solutions containing cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, ascorbic acid, and gold or silver ions, we obtained Au and Ag nanomaterials of different sizes and shapes, which we characterized through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dark-field microscopy (DFM). At 0.001x concentrations AuNPSs and AgNPSs (i.e., 1000-fold-diluted solutions of the as-prepared samples), Au and Ag nanomaterials having 1.36 and 5.21 mum lengths and aspect ratios of 11 and 24 were prepared in yields of 27% and 54%, respectively. Scattering spectra of the thus-prepared single AuNRs and AgNRs revealed that the uniformity in the shape of the AuNRs was greater than that of the AgNRs. In addition, we demonstrate the preparation (using a laboratory-made synthesis system) and characterization (through DFM measurements) of Au nanomaterials, including AuNRs, from five AuNPS solutions of different concentrations on a single glass substrate.
