The past decade of studies showed that parenting behaviors (e.g., warmth, autonomy, and control) were associated with children's executive functions (EF) in the early years. However, different measurement methods had been used across studies, making it hard to compare the effects of parenting on EF across studies. Therefore, the present study aimed to examine the effect of the measurement methods on the relationship between maternal parenting behaviors and children's EF among a group of Chinese preschoolers. One hundred and twenty-six children (62 boys; Mage = 48.65 months) were assessed with direct measures on children's EF (inhibition and working memory tasks), and parenting behaviors of their mothers during interaction with children were observed and coded. Mothers also reported their parenting practices and children's difficulties in executive functions. The results of structural equation modeling showed that the latent performance-based EF was uniquely predicted by maternal positive control and negative control in mother-child interaction, while children's EF difficulties reported by mothers were predicted by mother-reported warmth and support, and autonomy granting. Overall, the results suggest that the relationship between maternal parenting and children's EF depends on the measurement methods of parenting and executive functions.

The conversion of CO2 to high value-added chemicals in water using environment-friendly and cost-effective catalysts is a very significant topic. In this work, a green method for the conversion of CO2 catalyzed by alcohol amines has been developed. Alcohol amines showed considerable activating ability to CO2 in the cyclization with 2-aminobenzonitrile to quinazoline-2,4(1H,3H)-dione in water. Notably, when diethanolamine (DEA) was used as the catalyst, 94% yield of quinazoline-2,4-(1H,3H)-dione could be achieved. A plausible mechanism has been proposed based on the 1H NMR, FT-IR analysis and DFT calculation. The excellent catalytic performance is attributed to the combined effect of both the secondary amine and hydroxyl groups on alcohol amines with the assistance of water in the formation of carbamate. Water plays a bi-functional role of solvent and co-catalyst in this catalytic process. Catalysts can be easily recovered and reused five times without significant loss of activity.

BACKGROUND: A satisfactory biopsy determines the state-of-the-art management of lung cancer in this era of personalized medicine. This study aimed to investigate the suitability and efficacy of computed tomography (CT)-guided core needle biopsy in clinical management. METHODS: A cohort of 353 patients with clinically suspected lung cancer was enrolled in the study. Patient factors and biopsy variables were recorded. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) gene mutations and echinoderm microtubule-associated protein-like 4 (EML4)-anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) rearrangement were detected in tumor specimens. Adequacy of biopsic obtainment for clinical trial screening and tissue bank establishment were reviewed. RESULTS: Overall diagnostic accuracy of malignancy achieved 98.5%. The median biopsy time of the cohort was 20 minutes. In patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), 99.3% (287/289) were diagnosed as specific histologic subtypes, and two patients (0.7%) were determined as NSCLC not otherwise specified (NOS). EGFR mutations were analyzed in 81.7% (236/289) of patients with NSCLC, and 98.7% (233/236) showed conclusive results. EML4-ALK gene fusion was tested in 43.9% (127/289) of NSCLC patients, and 98.4% (125/127) showed conclusive results: 6.4% (8/125) of those had gene fusion. Ninety-six NSCLC patients participated in clinical trial screening and provided mandatory tumor slides for molecular profiling. Pathological evaluation was fulfilled in 90 patients (93.8%); 99.4% (320/322) of patients with malignancy provided extra tissue for the establishment of a tumor bank. CONCLUSIONS: CT-guided core needle biopsy provided optimal clinical management in this era of translational medicine. The biopsic modality should be prioritized in selected lung cancer patients.

AIM OF THE STUDY: A Chinese herbal formula, Hu-qi-yin possessed an anti-pulmonary fibrosis effect. Pericarp of Citrus reticulata, one of the herbal drugs contained in this formula showed the most potent inhibitory activity on the proliferation of human embryonic lung fibroblasts (HELF). The present study was designed to clarify the active principles responsible for the activity and further explore the anti-pulmonary fibrosis effect in vivo. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The water, 75% ethanol and flavonoids-enriched extracts of Citrus reticulata were prepared and screened for their anti-proliferation activity using HELF culture system. The ethanol extract was further administered orally at doses of 100 and 200 mg/(kg day) to bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis rats. The analyses of the rat body weight, hydroxyproline levels in serum and lung, scores of alveolitis and fibrosis, as well as the expression of transforming growth factor-beta(1) (TGF-beta(1)) at the protein and the messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) levels in lung were performed. RESULTS: The ethanol extract showed the strongest inhibitory activity on HELF proliferation. Further research using BLM-induced rat model revealed that the ethanol extract at the doses of 100 and 200 mg/(kg day) caused a marked increase of body weight at first 7 days, significantly lowered the hydroxyproline levels in lung, greatly improved the pathologic scores, as well as inhibited the overexpressions of TGF-beta(1) protein and mRNA. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the ethanol extract of Citrus reticulata has anti-pulmonary fibrosis effects and might have a great potential for the treatment of fibrosis of lung.
