RESUMO

Recently, the introduction of fluorosulfonyl (-SO2F) groups have attracted considerable research interests, as this moiety could often afford enhanced activities and new functions in the context of chemical biology and drug discovery. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of 1-fluorosulfamoyl-pyridinium (FSAP) salts, which could serve as an effective photoredox-active precursor to fluorosulfamoyl radicals and enable the direct radical C-H fluorosulfonamidation of a variety of (hetero)arenes. This method features mild conditions, visible light, broad substrate scope, good group tolerance, etc., and a metal-free protocol is also viable by using organic photocatalysts. Further, FSAP can also be applied to the radical functionalization of alkenes via 1,2-difunctionalization, radical distal migration, tandem radical-polar crossover reactions, etc. In addition, a formal C-H methylamination of (hetero)arenes by combining this radical C-H fluorosulfonamidation with subsequent hydrolysis as well as product derivatization are also demonstrated.

RESUMO

In photosynthetic cells, plants convert carbon dioxide to sugars that can be moved between cellular compartments by transporters before being subsequently metabolized to support plant growth and development. Most pathogens cannot synthesize sugars directly but have evolved mechanisms to obtain plant-derived sugars as C resource for successful infection and colonization. The availability of sugars to pathogens can determine resistance or susceptibility. Here, we summarize current progress on the roles of sugar transporters in plant-pathogen interactions. We highlight how transporters are manipulated antagonistically by both host and pathogens in competing for sugars. We examine the potential application of this target in resistance breeding and discuss opportunities and challenges for the future.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative differentiation of the types of mediastinal tumors is essential. Magnetic resonance (MR) elastography potentially provides a noninvasive method to assess the classification of mediastinal tumor subtypes. PURPOSE: To evaluate the use of MR elastography in anterior mediastinal masses and to characterize the mechanical properties of tumors of different subtypes. STUDY TYPE: Prospective. SUBJECTS: 189 patients with anterior mediastinal tumors (AMTs) confirmed by histopathology (62 thymomas, 53 thymic carcinomas, 57 lymphomas, and 17 germ cell tumors). FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE: A gradient echo-based 2D MR elastography sequence and a diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) sequence at 3.0 T. ASSESSMENT: Stiffness and apparent diffusion coefficients (ADC) were measured in AMTs using MR elastography-derived elastograms and DWI-derived ADC maps, respectively. The aim of this study is to identify whether MR elastography can differentiate between the histological subtypes of ATMs. STATISTICAL TESTS: One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), two-way ANOVA, Pearson's linear correlation coefficient (r), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis; P < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Lymphomas had significantly lower stiffness than other AMTs (4.0 ± 0.63 kPa vs. 4.8 ± 1.39 kPa). The mean stiffness of thymic carcinomas was significantly higher than that of other AMTs (5.6 ± 1.41 kPa vs. 4.2 ± 0.94 kPa). Using a cutoff value of 5.0 kPa, ROC analysis showed that lymphomas could be differentiated from other AMTs with an accuracy of 59%, sensitivity of 97%, and specificity of 38%. Using a cutoff value of 5.1 kPa, thymic carcinomas could be differentiated from other AMTs with an accuracy of 84%, sensitivity of 67%, and specificity of 90%. However, there was an overlap in the stiffness values of individual thymomas (4.2 ± 0.71; 3.9-4.5), thymic carcinomas (5.6 ± 1.41; 5.0-6.1), lymphomas (4.0 ± 0.63; 3.8-4.2), and germ cell tumors (4.5 ± 1.79; 3.3-5.6). DATA CONCLUSION: MR elastography-derived stiffness may be used to evaluate AMTs of various histologies. TECHNICAL EFFICACY: Stage 2.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the epidemiology, treatment patterns, and resource utilization in patients with alopecia areata (AA) in Taiwan using the National Health Insurance Research Database. AA severity was determined by treatment use and diagnostic codes in the year after enrollment (including corticosteroids, systemic immunosuppressants, topical immunotherapy, and phototherapy). METHODS: The cross-sectional analysis was conducted to estimate the incidence and prevalence of AA from 2016 to 2020. For the longitudinal analysis, 2 cohorts were identified: mild/moderate and severe. The cohorts were matched based on age, gender, and comorbidities. Patients were enrolled upon their first claim with an AA diagnosis during the index period of 2017-2018. RESULTS: The number of patients with AA increased from 3221 in 2016 to 3855 in 2020. The longitudinal analysis identified 1808 mild/moderate patients and 452 severe patients. Mild/moderate patients used higher levels of topical corticosteroids (82.41%) than severe patients (73.45%). Conversely, severe patients used more topical nonsteroids (41.81%) and systemic therapies (51.77%) than mild/moderate patients (0.44% and 16.15%, respectively). Oral glucocorticoids use was higher in severe patients (47.57%) relative to mild/moderate patients (14.88%), whereas the use of injectable forms was similar. The most used systemic immunosuppressants were methotrexate, cyclosporin, and azathioprine. Topical immunotherapy utilization decreased with subsequent treatment lines for severe patients. Treatment persistence at 6 months was low for all treatments. Severe patients had higher annual AA-related outpatient visits than the mild/moderate cohort. CONCLUSIONS: These findings highlight the need for additional innovations and therapies to address the clinical and economic burden of AA.

Bronchoscopic-assisted discrimination of lung tumors presents challenges, especially in cases with contraindications or inaccessible lesions. Through meta-analysis and validation using the HumanMethylation450 database, this study identified methylation markers for molecular discrimination in lung tumors and designed a sequencing panel. DNA samples from 118 bronchial washing fluid (BWF) specimens underwent enrichment via multiplex PCR before targeted methylation sequencing. The Recursive Feature Elimination Cross-Validation and deep neural network algorithm established the CanDo classification model, which incorporated 11 methylation features (including 8 specific to the TBR1 gene), demonstrating a sensitivity of 98.6% and specificity of 97.8%. In contrast, bronchoscopic rapid on-site evaluation (bronchoscopic-ROSE) had lower sensitivity (87.7%) and specificity (80%). Further validation in 33 individuals confirmed CanDo's discriminatory potential, particularly in challenging cases for bronchoscopic-ROSE due to pathological complexity. CanDo serves as a valuable complement to bronchoscopy for the discriminatory diagnosis and stratified management of lung tumors utilizing BWF specimens.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Wutou Decoction (WTD) is a classic traditional Chinese medicine formula, which has shown clinical efficacy in treating rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The Treg stability and Th17/Treg imbalance is an important immunological mechanism in RA progression. Whether WTD regulates CD4+ T cell subsets has not been thoroughly investigated yet. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to explore the potential role and mechanisms of WTD in regulating the diminished stability of Treg cells and the imbalance of CD4+ T cell subsets via in vivo and in vitro experiments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Firstly, the therapeutic effects of WTD on the collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) mouse and its potential regulatory function on CD4+ T cell subsets were evaluated in vivo. Animal specimens were collected after 31 days of treatment with WTD. The anti-arthritic and anti-inflammatory effects of WTD were assessed through arthritis scoring, body weight, spleen index, serum IL-6 levels, and micro-PET/CT imaging. Gene enrichment analysis was performed to evaluate the activation T cell-related signaling pathway. Flow cytometry was used to determine the proportions of CD4+ T cell subsets in vitro and in vitro. Additionally, ELISA was used to assess the secretion of IL-10 and TGF-ß by Treg cells under inflammatory conditions. The suppressive function of Treg cells on cell proliferation under inflammatory conditions was examined using CFSE labeling. Immunofluorescence staining was performed to detect the phosphorylation levels of STAT3 in CD4+ T cells from mouse spleen tissues. Western blotting was used to evaluate the phosphorylation levels of JAK2/STAT3 in Treg cells. RESULTS: WTD significantly alleviated joint inflammation in CIA mice. WTD reduced serum IL-6 levels in CIA mice, improved their body weight and spleen index. WTD treatment inhibited the activation of CD4+ T cell subgroup-related signaling in the joint tissues of CIA mice. In vitro and in vitro experiments showed that WTD increased the proportion of Treg cells and decreased the proportion of Th17 cells in CIA mice spleen. Furthermore, WTD promoted the secretion of IL-10 and TGF-ß by Treg cells and enhanced the inhibitory capacity of Treg cells on cell proliferation under inflammatory conditions. Immunofluorescence detected decreased STAT3 phosphorylation levels in CD4+ T cells from CIA mice spleen, while western blotting revealed a decrease in JAK2/STAT3 phosphorylation levels in Treg cells in vitro. CONCLUSIONS: Inhibiting JAK2/STAT3 phosphorylation is a potential mechanism through which WTD improves Treg cell stability, balances CD4+ T cell subsets, and attenuates RA joint inflammation.

Chemical oxo-precipitation (COP) is an enhanced precipitation method for boron removal with the conversion of boric acid to perborate anions. When using barium-based precipitant, the boron can be effectively precipitated as barium perborates (BaPBs). The phase transformation of BaPBs from amorphous (A-BaPB, Ba(B(OH)3OOH)2) to crystalline (C-BaPB, BaB2(OO)2(OH)4) form is crucial for effective boron removal. However, scaling up this phase transformation of BaPBs is hindered by poor diffusion. This study aims to promote the growth of C-BaPB through seed-induced crystal growth, eliminating the need for phase transformation. By examining the relationship between crystal growth rate and supersaturation, surface spiral growth was identified as the rate-limiting step of the growth of micron-sized seeds near pHpzc. To enable continuous crystal growth, granular seeds of C-BaPB were prepared and employed as the medium for fluidized-bed crystallization (FBC). The system reached steady state 3 hydraulic retention times, achieving 90% boron removal. The effect of surface loading, ionic strength, and dosages on steady-state crystal growth rate was studied, revealing a shift of the rate-limiting step in FBC to diffusion. Lastly, the system that constituted of two FBCs in-series for sequential crystallization of A-BaPB and C-BaPB was demonstrated. The integrated system provided 97.8% of boron removal from synthetic wastewater containing 500 mg-B/L, with 92.3% of boron crystallized on the granular seeds of BaPBs.

The overuse of antibiotics in animal farming and aquaculture has led to multidrug-resistant methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MR-MSSA) becoming a common pathogen in foodborne diseases. Sophora flavescens Ait. serves as a traditional plant antibacterial agent and functional food ingredient. A total of 30 compounds (1-30) were isolated from the root bark of S. flavescens, consisting of 20 new compounds (1-20). In the biological activity assay, compound 1 demonstrated a remarkable inhibitory effect on MR-MSSA, with an MIC of 2 µg/mL. Furthermore, 1 was found to rapidly eliminate bacteria, inhibit biofilm growth, and exhibit exceptionally low cytotoxicity. Mechanistic studies have revealed that 1 possesses an enhanced membrane-targeting ability, binding to the bacterial cell membrane components phosphatidylglycerol (PG), phosphatidylethanolamine (PE), and cardiolipin (CL). This disruption of bacterial cell membrane integrity increases intracellular reactive oxygen species, protein and DNA leakage, reduced bacterial metabolism, and ultimately bacterial death. In summary, these findings suggest that compound 1 holds promise as a lead compound against MR-MSSA.

CRISPR-Cas systems are adaptive immune mechanisms present in most prokaryotes that play an important role in the adaptation of bacteria and archaea to new environments. Shewanella algae is a marine zoonotic pathogen with worldwide distribution, which accounts for the majority of clinical cases of Shewanella infections. However, the characterization of Shewanella algae CRISPR-Cas systems has not been well investigated yet. Through whole genome sequence analysis, we characterized the CRISPR-Cas systems in S. algae. Our results indicate that CRISPR-Cas systems are prevalent in S. algae, with the majority of strains containing the Type I-F system. This study provides new insights into the diversity and function of CRISPR-Cas systems in S. algae and highlights their potential role in the adaptation and survival of these marine pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Evidence from observational studies indicates that lung cancer screening (LCS) guidelines with high rates of lung cancer (LC) underdiagnosis, and although current screening guidelines have been updated and eligibility criteria for screening have been expanded, there are no studies comparing the efficiency of LCS guidelines in Chinese population. METHODS: Between 2005 and 2022, 31,394 asymptomatic individuals were screened using low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) at our institution. Demographic data and relevant LC risk factors were collected. The efficiency of the LCS for each guideline criteria was expressed as the efficiency ratio (ER). The inclusion rates, eligibility rates, LC detection rates, and ER based on the different eligibility criteria of the four guidelines were comparatively analyzed. The four guidelines were as follows: China guideline for the screening and early detection of lung cancer (CGSL), the National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), and International Early Lung Cancer Action Program (I-ELCAP). RESULTS: Of 31,394 participants, 298 (155 women, 143 men) were diagnosed with LC. For CGSL, NCCN, USPSTF, and I-ELCAP guidelines, the eligibility rates for guidelines were 13.92%, 6.97%, 6.81%, and 53.46%; ERe for eligibility criteria were 1.46%, 1.64%, 1.51%, and 1.13%, respectively; and for the inclusion rates, they were 19.0%, 9.5%, 9.3%, and 73.0%, respectively. LCs which met the screening criteria of CGSL, NCCN, USPSTF, and I-ELCAP guidelines were 29.2%, 16.4%, 14.8%, and 86.6%, respectively. The age and smoking criteria for CGSL were stricter, hence resulting in lower rates of LC meeting the screening criteria. The CGSL, NCCN, and USPSTF guidelines showed the highest underdiagnosis in the 45-49 age group (17.4%), while the I-ELCAP guideline displayed the highest missed diagnosis rate (3.0%) in the 35-39 age group. Males and females significantly differed in eligibility based on the criteria of the four guidelines (P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: The I-ELCAP guideline has the highest eligibility rate for both males and females. But its actual efficiency ratio for those deemed eligible by the guideline was the lowest. Whereas the NCCN guideline has the highest ERe value for those deemed eligible by the guideline.

In recent years, an increasing number of viruses have triggered outbreaks that pose a severe threat to both human and animal life, as well as caused substantial economic losses. It is crucial to understand the genomic structure and epidemiology of these viruses to guide effective clinical prevention and treatment strategies. Nanopore sequencing, a third-generation sequencing technology, has been widely used in genomic research since 2014. This technology offers several advantages over traditional methods and next-generation sequencing (NGS), such as the ability to generate ultra-long reads, high efficiency, real-time monitoring and analysis, portability, and the ability to directly sequence RNA or DNA molecules. As a result, it exhibits excellent applicability and flexibility in virus research, including viral detection and surveillance, genome assembly, the discovery of new variants and novel viruses, and the identification of chemical modifications. In this paper, we provide a comprehensive review of the development, principles, advantages, and applications of nanopore sequencing technology in animal and human virus research, aiming to offer fresh perspectives for future studies in this field.

Zirconium-based metallic glasses (Zr-MGs) are demonstrated to exhibit high mechanical strength, low elastic modulus and excellent biocompatibility, making them promising materials for endosseous implants. Meanwhile, tantalum (Ta) is also well known for its ideal corrosion resistance and biological effects. However, the metal has an elastic modulus as high as 186 GPa which is not comparable to the natural bone (10-30 GPa), and it also has a relative high cost. Here, to fully exploit the advantages of Ta as endosseous implants, a small amount of Ta (as low as 3 at. %) was successfully added into a Zr-MG to generate an advanced functional endosseous implant, Zr58Cu25Al14Ta3 MG, with superior comprehensive properties. Upon carefully dissecting the atomic structure and surface chemistry, the results show that amorphization of Ta enables the uniform distribution in material surface, leading to a significantly improved chemical stability and extensive material-cell contact regulation. Systematical analyses on the immunological, angiogenesis and osteogenesis capability of the material are carried out utilizing the next-generation sequencing, revealing that Zr58Cu25Al14Ta3 MG can regulate angiogenesis through VEGF signaling pathway and osteogenesis via BMP signaling pathway. Animal experiment further confirms a sound osseointegration of Zr58Cu25Al14Ta3 MG in achieving better bone-implant-contact and inducing faster peri-implant bone formation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the optimal scan duration for ultrafast DCE-MRI in effectively differentiating benign from malignant breast lesions. METHODS: The study prospectively recruited participants who underwent breast ultrafast DCE-MRI from September 2021 to March 2023. A 30-phase breast ultrafast DCE-MRI on a 3.0-T MRI system was conducted with a 4.5-s temporal resolution. Scan durations ranged from 40.5 s to 135.0 s, during which the analysis is performed at three-phase intervals, forming eight dynamic sets (scan duration [SD]40.5s: 40.5 s, SD54s: 54.0 s, SD67.5s: 67.5 s, SD81s: 81.0 s, SD94.5s: 94.5 s, SD108s: 108.0 s, SD121.5s: 121.5 s, and SD135s: 135.0 s). Two ultrafast DCE-MRI parameters, maximum slope (MS) and initial area under the curve in 60 s (iAUC), were calculated for each dynamic set and compared between benign and malignant lesions. Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUCs) were used to assess their diagnostic performance. RESULTS: A total of 140 women (mean age, 47 ± 11 years) with 151 lesions were included. MS and iAUC from eight dynamic sets exhibited significant differences between benign and malignant lesions (all p < 0.05), except iAUC at SD40.5s. The AUC of MS (AUC = 0.804) and iAUC (AUC = 0.659) at SD67.5s were significantly higher than their values at SD40.5s (AUC = 0.606 and 0.516; corrected p < 0.05). No significant differences in AUCs for MS and iAUC were observed from SD67.5s to SD135s (all corrected p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Ultrafast DCE-MRI with a 67.5-s scan duration appears optimal for effectively differentiating malignant from benign breast lesions. CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: By evaluating scan durations (40.5-135 s) and analyzing two ultrafast DCE-MRI parameters, we found a scan duration of 67.5 s optimal for discriminating between these lesions and offering a balance between acquisition time and diagnostic efficacy. KEY POINTS: Ultrafast DCE-MRI can effectively differentiate malignant from benign breast lesions. A minimum of 67.5-sec ultrafast DCE-MRI scan duration is required to differentiate benign and malignant lesions. Extending the scan duration beyond 67.5 s did not significantly improve diagnostic accuracy.

Lactobacillus acidophilus (L. acidophilus), the most prevalent probiotic, has demonstrated the ability to improve the relative abundance of intestinal microorganisms and boost immunity. However, the underlying mechanisms of these effects remain unclear. This study evaluated body weight, nutrient apparent digestibility, serum indices, and bacterial communities in Chinese rural dogs from a L. acidophilus supplementation group (Lactobacillus acidophilus, n = 6) and a control group (CON, n = 6). The results indicated that L. acidophilus had no significant impact on the body weight and apparent nutrient digestibility of Chinese rural dogs. In comparison with the CON group, L. acidophilus significantly reduced the levels of cholesterol (CHO) and increased the levels of IgA, IFN-α, and T-AOC. Bacterial diversity indices were significantly reduced in the LAC group compared to the CON groups, and MetaStat analysis demonstrated notable distinctions in 14 bacterial genera between the groups. These bacterial genera exhibited correlations with physiological indices such as CHO, IgA, IFN-α, and T-AOC. In conclusion, L. acidophilus can modulate lipid metabolism, immunity, and antioxidant capacity by regulating the relative abundance of specific bacterial communities, which helps dogs to adapt to today's lifestyle.

Soil salinization is a significant global issue that leads to land degradation and loss of ecological function. In coastal areas, salinization hampers vegetation growth, and forestation efforts can accelerate the recovery of ecological functions and enhance resilience to extreme climates. However, the salinity tolerance of tree species varies due to complex biological factors, and results between lab/greenhouse and field studies are often inconsistent. Moreover, in salinized areas affected by extreme climatic and human impacts, afforestation with indigenous species may face adaptability challenges. Therefore, it is crucial to select appropriate cross-species salinity tolerance indicators that have been validated in the field to enhance the success of afforestation and reforestation efforts. This study focuses on five native coastal tree species in Taiwan, conducting afforestation experiments on salt-affected soils mixed with construction and demolition waste. It integrates short-term controlled experiments with potted seedlings and long-term field observations to establish growth performance and physiological and biochemical parameters indicative of salinity tolerance. Results showed that Heritiera littoralis Dryand. exhibited the highest salinity tolerance, accumulating significant leaf proline under increased salinity. Conversely, Melia azedarach Linn. had the lowest tolerance, evidenced by complete defoliation and reduced biomass under salt stress. Generally, the field growth performance of these species aligns with the results of short-term pot experiments. Leaf malondialdehyde content from pot experiments proved to be a reliable cross-species salinity tolerance indicator, correlating negatively with field relative height growth and survival rates. Additionally, parameters related to the photosynthetic system or water status, measured using portable devices, also moderately indicated field survival, aiding in identifying potential salt-tolerant tree species. This study underscores the pivotal role of species selection in afforestation success, demonstrating that small-scale, short-term salinity control experiments coupled with appropriate assessment tools can effectively identify species suitable for highly saline and degraded environments. This approach not only increases the success of afforestation but also conserves resources needed for field replanting and maintenance, supporting sustainable development goals.

This study examines the predictive value of elevated N-terminal-pro brain natriuretic peptide (NT-pro BNP) levels for mortality among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Data from 768 ESRD patients, excluding those with cancer or lost follow-up, were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox proportional hazards models over three years. Results indicated that patients with very high NT-pro BNP levels had shorter average survival times and a significantly higher risk of mortality (hazard ratio 1.43). Advanced age, ICU admission, and comorbidities like cerebrovascular diseases and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease also contributed to increased mortality risks. Thus, elevated NT-pro BNP is an independent risk factor for mortality in ESRD patients.

The gut microbiome is crucial in maintaining fish health homeostasis. Disinfectants can kill important pathogens and disinfect fish eggs, yet their effect on the immune pathways and intestinal microbiome in healthy fish remains unknown. In this study, we investigated the effects of two disinfectants on the transcriptome profiles, immunological response, and gut microbiota dynamics of grass carp over a four-week trial. In particular, aquatic water was disinfected with 80 µg/L glutaraldehyde or 50 µg/L povidone-iodine. We found that glutaraldehyde and povidone-iodine induced gut antioxidant system and depressed the function of grass carp digestive enzymes. The results of the 16S rDNA high-throughput sequencing identified a reduction in the diversity of grass carp gut microbiota following the disinfectant treatment. Moreover, transcriptome profiling revealed that disinfectant exposure altered the immune-related pathways of grass carp and inhibited the expression of inflammation and tight junction related genes. Finally, the histopathological observation and apoptosis detection results suggested that the long-term diet of disinfectant destroyed intestinal structural integrity and promoted apoptosis. In conclusion, long-term exposure to disinfectants was observed to reduce oxidation resistance, suppress the immune response, dysbiosis of the intestinal flora, and resulted in increasing the apoptosis in intestinal of grass carp.

INTRODUCTION: The Baveno criteria for assessing advanced liver fibrosis were mainly determined by transient elastography (TE), and its pathology-based validation studies in two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) remain limited. We aimed to validate the Baveno criteria through use of 2D-SWE. METHOD: Consecutive patients who underwent liver biopsies for various benign liver diseases were prospectively recruited. Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) was simultaneously evaluated by TE and 2D-SWE. The optimal cutoff value to predict advanced liver fibrosis was determined by the Youden Index, and the diagnostic performance was estimated using area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUROC) analysis. RESULTS: A total of 101 patients were enrolled having a median age of 55.0 (IQR: 46.0-63.5) years, with 53 (52.48%) of them being male. Using <9 and >14 kPa as the optimal dual cutoffs, the AUROC values in TE and 2D-SWE were 0.92 (95% CI: 0.83-0.97) and 0.93 (95% CI: 0.84-0.98), respectively (p = 0.61). The sensitivity and specificity of LSM by TE/2D-SWE achieved rates of 94.44%/94.44% and 86.00%/88.00%, respectively. However, using the Baveno criteria, the AUROC values in TE and 2D-SWE could remain achieving 0.91 (95% CI: 0.82-0.97) and 0.93 (95% CI: 0.84-0.98), respectively (p = 0.36). The sensitivity and specificity in TE/2D-SWE were 88.24%/88.24% and 86.79%/90.57%, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study establishes the compatibility of the Baveno dual cutoff criteria with 2D-SWE, positioning it as an easily used criteria in clinical practice and research.

Zoonotic hepatitis E virus (HEV) infection is an emerging global public health concern, and understanding the dynamics of HEV transmission between animals and humans is crucial for public health. Animal models are critical to advancing the understanding of HEV pathogenesis, drug screening, vaccine development, and other related areas. Here, we provide an overview of recent studies investigating the cross-species transmission of HEV, and also delve into the current research and application of animal HEV infection models including non-human primates, rodents, pigs, and chickens, offering a comprehensive assessment of the advantages and disadvantages of each model. This review highlights the findings related to viral replication, shedding patterns, and immune response in these animal models, and discusses the implications for our understanding of HEV transmission to humans. These advancements in the field enhance our understanding of the biological traits and pathogenic mechanisms of HEV, offering robust support for the development of highly effective and targeted prevention and treatment strategies.

The mixture of copper and iron often results in materials with favorable properties. The material production processes involving these metals including electroplating produce hazardous wastewater. In this study, the Fluidized Bed Homogeneous Crystallization (FBHC) process was applied to treat iron and copper-containing wastewater. The initial iron copper particles were successfully recovered from synthetic wastewater with [Fe]0:[Cu]0 of 2:1, the total metal concentration of 3 mM, at effluent pH = 7.75 ± 0.75, with the upflow velocity (U) of 1.76 m/h. The agglomerates hardening process is a crucial step for initial particle synthesis. The SEM analysis reveals the spherical particle's densified crust and porous core. The particle formation mechanism which includes the formation of the nucleus, attachment of precipitate flakes, and densification of particles was proposed after microscopic observation. The initial particles synthesized were used to initiate the treatment of synthetic wastewater at the operating condition pH = 7.75 ± 0.5, [Fe]0:[Cu]0 of 2:1, the total metal concentration of 3 mM, [CO32-]0:[M]0 = 1.2:1, and U of 28.66 m/h which results in the total metal removal of 99% and crystallization ratio of 90% and 88% for iron and copper respectively. The conditions were then applied to treat electroplating wastewater and resulted in the total metal removal of 99% for both iron and copper and a crystallization ratio of 83% and 79% for iron and copper, respectively. The treatment provided advantages in terms of treating larger amounts of sludge while eliminating the need to provide seed thus yielding a higher purity of product.
