RESUMO

Three fluorinated, hydrophobic initiators have been utilised for the synthesis of low molecular mass fluoro-poly(acrylic acid) heterotelechelic homopolymers to mimic high chi (χ)-low N diblock copolymers with ultrafine domains of sub-2 nm length scale. Polymers were obtained by a simple photoinduced copper(ii)-mediated reversible-deactivation radical polymerisation (Cu-RDRP) affording low molecular mass (<3 kDa) and low dispersity (D = 1.04-1.21) homopolymers. Heating/cooling ramps were performed on bulk samples (ca. 250 µm thick) to obtain thermodynamically stable nanomorpologies of lamellar (LAM) or hexagonally packed cylinders (HEX), as deduced by small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). Construction of the experimental phase diagram alongside a detailed theoretical model demonstrated typical rod-coil block copolymer phase behaviour for these fluoro-poly(acrylic acid) homopolymers, where the fluorinated initiator-derived segment acts as a rod and the poly(acrylic acid) as a coil. This work reveals that these telechelic homopolymers mimic high χ-ultralow N diblock copolymers and enables reproducible targeting of nanomorphologies with incredibly small, tunable domain size.

Powders of lithium niobate-tantalate across the full compositional range have been made and crystals grown using a lithium vanadate flux growth technique. The Li-content of a lithium tantalate crystal has been determined using the zero-birefringence temperature and Curie measurements, confirming the Li content is between that of congruent and stoichiometric crystals. X-ray diffraction measurements show the Nb/Ta displacement and octahedral tilt both decrease as the Ta content is increased. This also results in a decrease in the lattice parameters from lithium niobate to lithium tantalate. Birefringence measurements on the crystals as a function of temperature have been used to determine the point that the crystals become zero-birefringent, and by comparison with the structural studies have confirmed that it is not related to a phase transition and the structures remain polar through the zero-birefringence points.

RESUMO

The symmetry of the intermediate high-temperature phase of PbHfO3 has been determined unambiguously to be orthorhombic using a combination of high-resolution X-ray diffraction and birefringence imaging microscopy measurements of crystal plates. While lattice parameter measurements as a function of temperature in the intermediate phase are consistent with either orthorhombic or tetragonal symmetry, domain orientations observed in birefringence imaging microscopy measurements utilizing the Metripol system are only consistent with orthorhombic symmetry with the unit cell in the rhombic orientation of the pseudocubic unit cell.

Primary cultures of adult rat hepatocytes were incubated (6 to 96 hr) with 50 to 150 mmol/L ethanol, 0.5 mmol/L linoleate, 0.5 mmol/L palmitate, 0.5 mmol/L 4-methylpyrazole, 0 to 25 mumol/L vitamin E phosphate or selected combinations of these agents. Agent-dependent changes in liver cell viability (AST release and reduction of 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) and function (phospholipid peroxidation, hydrolysis, biosynthesis and triacylglycerol biosynthesis) were determined. The influence of ethanol on liver cell function and viability was dose and incubation time dependent. Short periods (24 hr or less) of exposure to 100 mmol/L ethanol increased liver cell triacylglycerol biosynthesis and phospholipid hydrolysis, peroxidation and biosynthesis without altering cell viability. However, longer periods (72 hr or more) of exposure to 100 or 150 mmol/L ethanol resulted in significant reductions (30% to 50%) in cell viability, function and phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis and content. The ethanol-dependent decreases in cell function and viability were potentiated by linoleate and reduced by vitamin E phosphate, palmitate and 4-methylpyrazole. These results suggest that ethanol-induced liver cell injury in vitro is not a result of ethanol per se, but factors such as acetaldehyde or oxyradicals produced as a consequence of ethanol metabolism. Therefore the incubation of cultured hepatocytes with ethanol may be an appropriate model in vitro for determining the mechanisms by which ethanol intake disrupts liver cell function in vivo.
