RESUMO

As the mining industry is facing an increasing number of issues related to its fresh water consumption, water-saving strategies are progressively being implemented in the mineral processing plants, often leading to variations in the process water chemistry. However, the impact of water chemistry variations on the process performance is rarely known beforehand, thus creating an obstacle to the implementation of those water-saving strategies. To tackle this problem, the effect the different dissolved species present in the process water have on the processing plant performance must be quantified, and this information must be digitalized in a practical and suitable form to be used in mineral processing simulators. To achieve this goal, a methodology to digitalize the influence of the process water composition on the flotation performance is presented in this paper. Using the flotation of a fluorite ore as case study, the relationship between process water composition and the flotation kinetics of that fluorite ore was determined. This relationship was digitalized in HSC Sim, a mineral processing simulator, turning it into a tool capable of simulating the flotation performance under a variety of process water compositions. Finally, the potential of this new tool to help implementing water-saving strategies on the mine site is discussed, and the challenges that need to be overcome in order to apply this tool at industrial scale are being addressed.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate if multiple sclerosis (MS) is associated with vitamin B12 (cobalamin) deficiency. METHODS: We measured serum vitamin B12, plasma folate, serum methylmalonic acid (MMA), plasma homocysteine (tHcy) and also cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) MMA and tHcy in 72 patients with MS and 23 controls. RESULTS: The mean plasma tHcy level was significantly increased in MS patients (11.6 micromol/L) compared with controls (7.4 micromol/L) (P = 0.002). Seven patients showed low serum vitamin B12 levels but only one of them had concomitant high plasma tHcy. None of them showed high serum MMA. Plasma or blood folate levels did not differ between MS patients and controls. We found no significant differences in mean values or frequency of pathological tests of serum B12, serum MMA, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), haemoglobin concentration, CSF tHcy or CSF MMA between patients and healthy subjects. There were no correlations between CSF and serum/plasma levels of MMA or tHcy. Serum vitamin B12, serum MMA, plasma tHcy, CSF Hcy or CSF MMA were not correlated to disability status, activity of disease, duration of disease or age. CONCLUSIONS: The relevance of the increased mean value of plasma tHcy thus seems uncertain and does not indicate functional vitamin B12 deficiency. We can not, however, exclude the possibility of a genetically induced dysfunction of the homocysteine metabolism relevant for the development of neuroinflammation/degeneration. Our findings indicate that, regardless of a significant increase in plasma tHcy in MS patients, the MS disease is not generally associated with vitamin B12 deficiency since we did not find any other factors indicating vitamin B12 deficiency. Analysis of CSF MMA and CSF tHcy, which probably reflects the brain vitamin B12 status better than serum, are not warranted in MS. We conclude that B12 deficiency, in general, is not associated with MS.

RESUMO

The aim of the study was to investigate the reliability and the validity of a Swedish version of the Revised Leeds Disability Questionnaire (RLDQ). Forty-two patients, 36 men and 6 women, median age 52.5 years, median symptom duration 24 years, with spondylarthropathy were assessed with the RLDQ, three questions on the content of the questionnaire, and range-of-motion measures. The results indicated satisfactory test-retest stability and internal consistency, and only minor internal redundancy. RLDQ items were generally considered relevant and suggested additions were similar to items already included in the questionnaire. Patients with low disability scores tended to be older and have better joint mobility than those with higher scores. Physiotherapists observed and scored disability significantly higher than patients. Correlations between subscores of the RLDQ and range-of-motion measures were in the main weak. In conclusion the Swedish version of the RLDQ may be considered as reliable and valid.

RESUMO

Nursing assessment, planning, interventions, and evaluation play a major role in the successful respiratory management of infants and children following cardiac surgery. A thorough understanding of the anatomy, physiology, treatment, and nursing assessment and care of these patients is necessary for complete and speedy postoperative recoveries. This article has attempted to highlight the major points in providing optimal levels of nursing care to these challenging patients.

RESUMO

Factors influencing the nursing diagnosis of pain in postoperative infants were investigated in a qualitative study. Crying was identified as the major indicator of pain. Work experience was identified as the major influence on analgesic administration by registered nurses (RNs). Needs for nursing education were identified.

RESUMO

Metoprolol slow-release tablets (Durules), 200 mg, given once daily in the morning were compared with placebo in the prophylaxis of classic migraine. The trial comprised eight Scandinavian neurologic centres and was designed as a double-blind cross-over study with 4 weeks' run-in, four weeks washout, and 8 weeks of either treatment. Seventy-seven patients with two to eight migraine attacks per month were entered in the trial, and 73 completed it. A total of 1119 attacks with aura symptoms and 374 without were recorded. Metoprolol was significantly better than placebo with regard to the total frequency of attacks (1.8 versus 2.5 attacks/4 weeks), mean duration of attacks (6.0 versus 8.0 h/attack), mean global rating, and consumption of analgesics per attack. Similar differences could be shown for attacks with aura symptoms alone, except for the duration of attacks. Metoprolol is the first drug for which a prophylactic effect in classic migraine has been convincingly demonstrated.
