Alluvial fans are large-scale depositional structures commonly found at the base of mountain ranges. They are relatively soil-rich compared to the rocky terrains, or catchment areas, from which their material originates. When frequented by debris flows (massive, muddy, rocky flows) they contribute significantly to local hazards as they carry focused, collisional, fast-moving materials across alluvial fans, unpredictable in size, speed, and direction. We research how fine particle content in debris flows correlates with directional changes, i.e., debris flow avulsions. Toward this, we analyzed field data from two neighboring alluvial fans in the White Mountains (California, USA) that exhibit dramatically different topographies despite their proximity and associated similar long-term climates. Informed by these measurements, we performed long-term and incremental alluvial fan experiments built by debris flows with systematically-varied fine particle content. We found that (1) decreasing fine particle content increases the variability of fan slopes and associated channelization dynamics, and (2) for all mixtures longer-term continuous alluvial fan experiments form more complex surface channelizations than repeated flows for the same total time, indicating the importance of both particle sizes and timescales on alluvial fan surface morphology.

There is an urgent need for materials that can efficiently generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) and be used in photodynamic therapy (PDT) as two-photon imaging contrast probes. In this study, graphene quantum dots (GQDs) were subjected to amino group functionalization and nitrogen doping (amino-N-GQDs) via annealing and hydrothermal ammonia autoclave treatments. The synthesized dots could serve as a photosensitizer in PDT and generate more ROS than conventional GQDs under 60-s low-energy (fixed output power: 0.07 W·cm-2) excitation exerted by a 670-nm continuous-wave laser. The generated ROS were used to completely eliminate a multidrug-resistant strain of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), a Gram-positive bacterium. Compared with conventional GQDs, the amino-N-GQDs had superior optical properties, including stronger absorption, higher quantum yield (0.34), stronger luminescence, and high stability under exposure. The high photostability and intrinsic luminescence of amino-N-GQDs contribute to their suitability as contrast probes for use in biomedical imaging, in addition to their bacteria tracking and localization abilities. Herein, the dual-modality amino-N-GQDs in PDT easily eliminated multidrug-resistant bacteria, ultimately revealing their potential for use in future clinical applications.

BACKGROUND: The pendulum test is a standard clinical test for quantifying the severity of spasticity. In the test, an electrogoniometer is typically used to measure the knee angular motion. The device is costly and difficult to set up such that the pendulum test is normally time consuming. OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to determine whether a Nintendo Wii remote can replace the electrogroniometer for reliable assessment of the angular motion of the knee in the pendulum test. METHODS: The pendulum test was performed in three control participants and 13 hemiplegic stroke patients using both a Wii remote and an electrogoniometer. The correlation coefficient and the Bland-Altman difference plot were used to compare the results obtained from the two devices. The Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used to compare the difference between hemiplegia-affected and nonaffected sides in the hemiplegic stroke patients. BACKGROUND: Whether post-stroke spasticity is associated with autonomic status is unclear. The purpose of our study was to determine whether spasticity in post-stroke patients is associated with heart rate variability (HRV), an indicator of sympathetic and parasympathetic regulation. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether HRV is associated with spasticity in post-stroke patients. METHODS: Our cross-sectional observational study included 21 post-stroke patients with varying degrees of knee spasticity. We measured patients' heart rate variability (HRV) during the morning and afternoon of the same day using the modified Ashworth assessment and the pendulum test. The relationship between HRV and the spasticity parameters was evaluated based on the Pearson correlation coefficient (r). RESULTS: The data for the morning measurements showed that the relaxation index negatively correlated with the high frequency (HF) power of HRV (r = -0.47, P < 0.05), and positively correlated with the low frequency (LF) power of HRV (r = 0.47, P < 0.05) and the LF/HF power ratio (r = 0.55, P < 0.05). Similar correlations were observed between the diurnal differences of HRV and the relaxation index. No correlation was observed among the data for the afternoon measurements. CONCLUSIONS: Higher parasympathetic tone and lower sympathetic tone are associated with a higher degree of knee spasticity in post-stroke patients. Further studies are warranted to confirm our findings and investigate the pathological mechanisms involved.
