RESUMO

60 students' files were randomly selected from a pool of 308 who were designated as seriously emotionally disturbed by their school districts. Analysis indicated that n = 30 students receiving their initial evaluations were rated more negatively by their special education and homeroom teachers than those 30 being reevaluated. Compared with the 60 special education teachers, more negative ratings were given by the 60 homeroom teachers. Elementary and secondary school placement did not significantly affect the behavior ratings.

RESUMO

Xeroradiographic and conventional film bitewing images of radiolucencies in approximal enamel were compared using a computer-aided image analysis system. Densitometric analysis of the conventional film types used in the study showed that the "lead foil free" film exhibited lower overall density when compared with conventional D-speed film. Computer-aided image analysis of radiolucencies in approximal enamel found that xeroradiographs depicted a higher degree of demineralization and a larger area than conventional radiography with the "lead foil free" film.

RESUMO

Three field cases of ill-thrift, hepatic lipodystrophy and low tissue levels of vitamin B12 in young angora cross goats are reported. The cases meet the criteria for the diagnosis of white liver disease (WLD) described for sheep. The hypothesis that WLD is a metabolic consequence of cobalt/vit B12 deficiency in sheep and goats on a diet rich in propionate is developed, together with possible reasons for its occurrence in these species but not in cattle or red deer.

RESUMO

Intelligence and achievement test scores of 100 school-identified, learning-disabled boys were analyzed. WISC-R students were analyzed for strengths and weaknesses, and patterns were identified through factor analysis. The factor loadings, as well as WISC-R IQs, were used as predictor variables, and the Woodcock-Johnson Achievement cluster scores comprised the achievement variables. A stepwise multiple regression indicated that the most powerful intelligence predictor for all three areas of achievement was the WISC-R Performance IQ. Four factor patterns significantly increased the prediction of Woodcock-Johnson Written Language scores.

RESUMO

77 regular and 45 special education teachers rated how disturbing various students' behaviors would be when working with the students in the classroom setting. Comparison of the two groups of teachers' ratings showed that the regular teachers reported more disturbance than special education teachers on two of the scales of the Teacher Checklist of School Behavior, Aggressive Interaction and Teacher Avoidance.

RESUMO

24 children surgically treated for pathology of the middle ear and 24 matched control children having histories without problems with ears or school were compared on the Slosson Intelligence Test, Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test, the Block Design subtest of the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Form R, the Spelling subtest of the Wide Range Achievement Test, the Spelling and Reading Recognition subtests of the Peabody Individual Achievement Test, and the Goldman-Fristoe-Woodcock Test of Auditory Discrimination. The surgical group scored similarly to the control children on six of the eight tests, but significantly lower on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test and the Block Design subtest of the Wechsler scale. Longitudinal research comparing similar groups of children is recommended.

RESUMO

The effects of pre-partum intravenous injections of vitamin A alcohol and vitamin palmitate on vitamin A levels in the plasma and livers of newborn lambs and in colostrum were studied with twenty mature Romney ewes. Injecting ewes with 250000 IU of vitamin A alcohol significantly (P less than .05) increased vitamin A levels in the blood (77%) and livers (75%) of newborn lambs. Differences between effect of vitamin A alcohol and vitamin A palmitate on either blood or liver levels in lambs were not significant. Transfer of injected vitamin A to lamb liver was inefficient (0.37% for palmitate, 0.12% for alcohol). There was 52% more vitamin A in colostrum from alcohol-injected than from palmitate-injected ewes. Although consistent with a postulation of preferential mammary transfer of vitamin A alcohol, this difference was not statistically significant (P greater than .05).
