PURPOSE: Despite the importance of self-monitoring blood glucose (SMBG) for management of diabetes mellitus (DM), frequent blood sampling is discouraged by bleeding risk due to dual-antiplatelet agent therapy (DAPT) or thrombocytopenia. METHODS: We compared the bleeding time (BT) of sampling by using a laser-lancing-device (LMT-1000) and a conventional lancet in patients with DM and thrombocytopenia or patients undergoing DAPT. BT was measured using the Duke method, and pain and satisfaction scores were assessed using numeric rating scale (NRS) and visual analog scale (VAS). The consistency in the values of glucose and glycated-hemoglobin (HbA1c) sampled using the LMT-1000 or lancet were compared. RESULTS: The BT of sampling with the LMT-1000 was shorter than that with the lancet in patients with thrombocytopenia (60s vs. 85s, P = 0.024). The NRS was lower and the VAS was higher in laser-applied-sampling than lancet-applied sampling in the DAPT-user group (NRS: 1 vs. 2, P = 0.010; VAS: 7 vs. 6, P = 0.003), whereas the group with thrombocytopenia only showed improvement in the VAS score (8 vs. 7, P = 0.049). Glucose and HbA1c sampled by the LMT-1000 and lancet were significantly correlated in both the DAPT-user and the thrombocytopenia groups. CONCLUSION: The LMT-1000 can promote SMBG by shortening BT in subject with thrombocytopenia and by increasing satisfaction score, as well as by showing reliable glucose and HbA1c value.

BACKGROUND: Hyperosmolar therapy has long been a cornerstone in managing increased intracranial pressure and improving outcomes in severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). This therapy hinges on elevating serum osmolality, creating an osmotic gradient that draws excess water from the brain's cellular and interstitial compartments and effectively reducing cerebral edema. Given this information, we hypothesized that the serum hyperosmolality prior to any treatment could significantly impact the clinical outcomes of patients with severe TBI, potentially mitigating secondary cerebral edema after trauma. METHODS: Data were extracted from the Korean Multi-center Traumatic Brain Injury data bank, encompassing 4628 patients with TBI admitted between January 2016 and December 2018. Of these, 507 patients diagnosed with severe TBI (Glasgow Coma Scale score < 9) were selected for comprehensive analysis across four data domains: clinical, laboratory, initial computed tomography scan, and treatment. Serum osmolality was assessed prior to treatment, and the hyperosmolar group was defined by a pretreatment serum osmolality exceeding 320 mOsm/L, whereas favorable outcomes were characterized by a modified Rankin Scale score of ≤ 3 at 6 months after trauma. Multivariate regression with receiver operating characteristic curve analysis and propensity score matching were used to dissect the data set. RESULTS: Multivariate analysis showed serum osmolality is significantly associated with clinical outcome in patients with severe TBI (p < 0.001). The optimal cutoff value for predicting favorable outcome was 331 mOsm/L, with a sensitivity of 38.9% and a specificity of 87.7%. Notably, the propensity score matching analysis comparing patients with pretreatment serum hyperosmolality with those without indicated a markedly improved functional outcome in the former group (32.5% vs 18.8%, p = 0.025). CONCLUSIONS: The present study has uncovered a significant correlation between the pretreatment serum osmolality and the clinical outcomes of patients with severe TBI. These findings offer a novel perspective, indicating that a serum hyperosmolality prior to any treatment might potentially have a neuroprotective effect in patients with severe TBI.

Despite the high potential of one-dimensional (1D) donor-acceptor (D-A) coaxial nanostructures in bulk-heterojunction solar cell applications, the preparation of such 1D nanostructures using π-conjugated polymers has remained elusive. Herein, we demonstrate the first example of D-A semiconducting nanoribbons based on fully conjugated block copolymers (BCPs) prepared in a highly efficient procedure with controllable width and length via living crystallization-driven self-assembly (CDSA). Initially, Suzuki-Miyaura catalyst-transfer polymerization was employed to successfully synthesize BCPs containing two types of acceptor shells as the first block, followed by a donor poly(3-propylthiophene) core as the second block. The limited solubility and high crystallinity of the core induced a polymerization-induced crystallization-driven self-assembly (PI-CDSA) of the BCPs into nanoribbons during polymerization, providing a tunable width (7.6-39.6 nm) depending on the length of the polymer backbone. Surprisingly, purifying as-synthesized BCPs via simple precipitation directly yielded short and uniform seed structures, greatly shortening the overall protocol by eliminating the time-consuming process of initial aging and breaking down to the seed required for the conventional CDSA. With this new highly efficient method, we achieved length control over a broad range from 169 to 2210 nm, with high precision (Lw/Ln < 1.20). Furthermore, combining self-seeding and seeded growth from two different D-A-type BCPs enabled continuous living epitaxial growth from each end of the nanoribbons, resulting in B-A-B triblock D-A semiconducting comicelles with controlled length.

Cell monitoring is essential for understanding the physiological conditions and cell abnormalities induced by various stimuli, such as stress factors, microbial invasion, and diseases. Currently, various techniques for detecting cell abnormalities and metabolites originating from specific cells are employed to obtain information on cells in terms of human health. Although the states of cells have traditionally been accessed using instrument-based analysis, this has been replaced by various sensor systems equipped with new materials and technologies. Various sensor systems have been developed for monitoring cells by recognizing biological markers such as proteins on cell surfaces, components on plasma membranes, secreted metabolites, and DNA sequences. Sensor systems are classified into subclasses, such as chemical sensors and biosensors, based on the components used to recognize the targets. In this review, we aim to outline the fundamental principles of sensor systems used for monitoring cells, encompassing both biosensors and chemical sensors. Specifically, we focus on biosensing systems in terms of the types of sensing and signal-transducing elements and introduce recent advancements and applications of biosensors. Finally, we address the present challenges in biosensor systems and the prospects that should be considered to enhance biosensor performance. Although this review covers the application of biosensors for monitoring cells, we believe that it can provide valuable insights for researchers and general readers interested in the advancements of biosensing and its further applications in biomedical fields.

The Confusion Assessment Method for the Intensive Care Unit (CAM-ICU) is a robust and reliable instrument for discerning delirium within the specific context of the intensive care unit (ICU). Nonetheless, the CAM-ICU is burdened by various limitations, including a protracted learning curve and the need for frequent daily administration. The 4 A's Test (4AT) was formulated to assess delirium in hospitalized patients and may have distinct advantages over the CAM-ICU, particularly regarding practical applicability within the ICU bundle. This study was performed to assess the utility of the 4AT in detecting delirium in critically ill patients. This multicenter prospective observational study involved critically ill patients at four academic tertiary care hospitals in South Korea from June 2021 to September 2022. In total, 274 patients (median age, 64 years; 56.9% men) were included, and 75 (27.4%) developed delirium. The 4AT showed good performance in detecting ICU delirium (area under the curve, 0.879; P < 0.001). The 4AT showed a sensitivity of 74.0%, specificity of 95.4%, positive predictive value of 77.5%, negative predictive value of 94.6%, and accuracy of 91.7% for ICU detection of delirium. The sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, and accuracy of the CAM-ICU for detecting ICU delirium were 71.3%, 97.1%, 83.8%, 94.1%, and 92.6%, respectively. The 4AT showed acceptable reliability and validity for detecting ICU delirium in critically ill patients. Because the 4AT is simpler and easier to learn, this scale could be a useful alternative to the CAM-ICU for detecting delirium in critically ill patients.

Although many patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) suffer from postconcussional syndrome (PCS) including abnormal emotional responses, most conventional imaging studies fail to detect any causative brain lesion. We hypothesized that event-related electroencephalography (EEG) recordings with time-frequency analysis would show a distinguishable pattern in patients with mTBI with PCS compared with normal healthy controls. EEG signals were collected from a total of 18 subjects: eight patients with mTBI with PCS and 10 healthy control subjects. The signals were recorded while the subjects were presented with affective visual stimuli, including neutral, pleasant, and unpleasant emotional cues. Event-related spectral perturbation analysis was performed to calculate frontal midline theta activity and posterior midline gamma activity, followed by statistical analysis to identify whether patients with mTBI with PCS have distinct patterns of theta or gamma oscillations in response to affective stimuli. Compared with the healthy control group, patients with mTBI with PCS did not show a significant increase in the power of frontal theta activity in response to the pleasant stimuli, indicating less susceptibility toward pleasant cues. Moreover, the patient group showed attenuated gamma oscillatory activity, with no clear alteration in gamma oscillations in response to either pleasant or unpleasant cues. This study demonstrates that patients with mTBI with PCS exhibited altered patterns of oscillatory activities in the theta and gamma bands in response to affective visual stimuli compared with the normal control group. The current finding implicates that these distinguishable patterns of brain oscillation may represent the mechanism behind various psychiatric symptoms in patients with mTBI.NEW & NOTEWORTHY Patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) with postconcussional syndrome (PCS) exhibited altered patterns of changes in oscillatory activities in the theta and gamma bands in response to visual affective stimuli. Distinguishable patterns of brain oscillation may represent the mechanism behind various psychiatric symptoms in patients with mTBI.

Nanomaterial-based yarns have been actively developed owing to their advantageous features, namely, high surface-area-to-volume ratios, flexibility, and unusual material characteristics such as anisotropy in electrical/thermal conductivity. The superior properties of the nanomaterials can be directly imparted and scaled-up to macro-sized structures. However, most nanomaterial-based yarns have thus far, been fabricated with only organic materials such as polymers, graphene, and carbon nanotubes. This paper presents a novel fabrication method for fully inorganic nanoribbon yarn, expanding its applicability by bundling highly aligned and suspended nanoribbons made from various inorganic materials (e.g., Au, Pd, Ni, Al, Pt, WO3, SnO2, NiO, In2O3, and CuO). The process involves depositing the target inorganic material on a nanoline mold, followed by suspension through plasma etching of the nanoline mold, and twisting using a custom-built yarning machine. Nanoribbon yarn structures of various functional inorganic materials are utilized for chemical sensors (Pd-based H2 and metal oxides (MOx)-based green gas sensors) and green energy transducers (water splitting electrodes/triboelectric nanogenerators). This method is expected to provide a comprehensive fabrication strategy for versatile inorganic nanomaterials-based yarns.

Industrial development has led to the widespread production of toxic materials, including carcinogenic, mutagenic, and toxic chemicals. Even with strict management and control measures, such materials still pose threats to human health. Therefore, convenient chemical sensors are required for toxic chemical monitoring, such as optical, electrochemical, nanomaterial-based, and biological-system-based sensors. Many existing and new chemical sensors have been developed, as well as new methods based on novel technologies for detecting toxic materials. The emergence of material sciences and advanced technologies for fabrication and signal-transducing processes has led to substantial improvements in the sensing elements for target recognition and signal-transducing elements for reporting interactions between targets and sensing elements. Many excellent reviews have effectively summarized the general principles and applications of different types of chemical sensors. Therefore, this review focuses on chemical sensor advancements in terms of the sensing and signal-transducing elements, as well as more recent achievements in chemical sensors for toxic material detection. We also discuss recent trends in biosensors for the detection of toxic materials.

As the demand for diverse nanostructures in physical/chemical devices continues to rise, the development of nanotransfer printing (nTP) technology is receiving significant attention due to its exceptional throughput and ease of use. Over the past decade, researchers have attempted to enhance the diversity of materials and substrates used in transfer processes as well as to improve the resolution, reliability, and scalability of nTP. Recent research on nTP has made continuous progress, particularly using the control of the interfacial adhesion force between the donor mold, target material, and receiver substrate, and numerous practical nTP methods with niche applications have been demonstrated. This review article offers a comprehensive analysis of the chronological advancements in nTP technology and categorizes recent strategies targeted for high-yield and versatile printing based on controlling the relative adhesion force depending on interfacial layers. In detail, the advantages and challenges of various nTP approaches are discussed based on their working mechanisms, and several promising solutions to improve morphological/material diversity are presented. Furthermore, this review provides a summary of potential applications of nanostructured devices, along with perspectives on the outlook and remaining challenges, which are expected to facilitate the continued progress of nTP technology and to inspire future innovations.

OBJECTIVE: Hair loss has been reported to occur during dopaminergic therapy in patients with Parkinson's disease. The mechanism by which dopaminergic therapy induces hair loss is not well understood. Dopamine receptors are present in the hair follicle, where they regulate melanin production. However, the role of dopamine receptors in hair growth is still not well understood. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of hair loss and identify factors associated with complaints of hair loss in patients with Parkinson's disease. METHODS: A cross-sectional design involving 495 Parkinson's disease patients was applied to evaluate hair loss status. Patients completed a questionnaire, and scalp/hair examinations were performed. Patients with underlying conditions that could affect hair loss and those prescribed medications known to increase the risk of hair loss were excluded. Finally, 291 patients (58.8%) were included for analysis. RESULTS: Among the 495 patients, 138 (27.9%) reported hair loss. Interestingly, more than half of the patients who complained of hair loss (79 out of 138) did not utilize treatments such as hair products, massage, dietary modifications, or alopecia medications. Hair inspection by a single investigator revealed objective hair loss in 263 patients (53.1%). An analysis of factors associated with hair loss complaints showed that the intake of dopaminergic medications with a levodopa-equivalent daily dose > 448 mg was associated with complaints of hair loss. CONCLUSION: Dopaminergic medication is associated with hair loss complaints in Parkinson's disease patients.

PURPOSE: To investigate the flow characteristics using different thresholding methods on a choriocapillaris optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) image complemented with a structural En Face image. METHODS: The 42 choriocapillaris OCTA images from healthy subjects were obtained with swept-source OCTA device and the 3 × 3-mm area OCTA images were processed with ImageJ. Using a raw choriocapillaris OCTA image and structural En Face image, we adjusted the different structural signal intensity. Then, the raw images and adjusted images were binarized with a global threshold and an auto local threshold using the Phansalkar method at 1- or 2-intercapillary distance. Then, the mean area, number, and size of the flow void, were compared among the images using different thresholding methods. RESULTS: Mean flow void area, number, and size were different according to the different binarization method both in raw and adjusted images (all p < 0.001). The mean flow void area analyzed with global threshold method were well correlated with those with auto local threshold method both in raw and adjusted images (all intraclass correlations, >0.929). CONCLUSIONS: Flow void features varied according to the different binarization methods but showed good correlation. The flow void characteristics according to the different binarization methods should be considered for the analysis of the choriocapillaris OCTA images complemented with a structural En Face image.

Natural products and herbal medicine have been widely used in drug discovery for treating infectious diseases. Recent outbreak of COVID-19 requires various therapeutic strategies. Here, we used YSK-A, a mixture of three herbal components Boswellia serrata, Commiphora myrrha, and propolis, to evaluate potential antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2. We showed that YSK-A inhibited SARS-CoV-2 propagation with an IC50 values of 12.5 µg/ml and 15.42 µg/ml in Vero E6 and Calu-3 cells, respectively. Using transcriptome analysis, we further demonstrated that YSK-A modulated various host gene expressions in Calu-3 cells. Among these, we selected 9 antiviral- or immune-related host genes for further study. By siRNA-mediated knockdown experiment, we verified that MUC5AC, LIF, CEACAM1, and GDF15 host genes were involved in antiviral activity of YSK-A. Therefore, silencing of these genes nullified YSK-A-mediated inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 propagation. These data indicate that YSK-A displays an anti-SARS-CoV-2 activity by targeting multiple antiviral genes. Although the exact antiviral mechanism of each constituent has not been verified yet, our data indicate that YSK-A has an immunomodulatory effect on SARS-CoV-2 and thus it may represent a novel natural product-derived therapeutic agent for treating COVID-19.

IMPORTANCE: Viruses are constantly evolving to promote propagation in the host. Here, we show that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) utilizes host RAD51 for replication. Silencing of RAD51 impaired SARS-CoV-2 propagation. Viral RNA colocalized with RAD51 in the cytoplasm of SARS-CoV-2-infected cells, suggesting that both viral RNA and RAD51 may form a replication complex. We, therefore, evaluated RAD51 inhibitors as possible therapeutic agents against SARS-CoV-2. Indeed, RAD51 inhibitors exerted antiviral activities against not only Wuhan but also variants of SARS-CoV-2. Molecular docking model shows that RAD51 inhibitors impede SARS-CoV-2 propagation by interfering with dimerization of RAD51. These data suggest that RAD51 may represent a novel host-based drug target for coronavirus disease 2019 treatment.

Background: Hypertension is a major cardiovascular risk factor in hemodialysis patients. This study identified the optimal blood pressure (BP) target for Korean hemodialysis patients using the Korean Renal Dialysis System (KORDS) dataset from the Korean Society of Nephrology and a pooled analysis for previous studies. Methods: Hemodialysis patients were classified according to their systolic (SBP) and diastolic BP (DBP) at intervals of 20 and 10 mmHg, respectively. As a primary and secondary outcome, all-cause mortality and cardiovascular mortality were evaluated. Subsequently, pooled analysis with previous literatures was performed. Results: Among 70,607 patients, 13,708 (19.4%) died in 2,426 days (interquartile range, 1,256-4,075 days). Mean SBP and DBP were 143.0 ± 19.6 and 78.5 ± 12.0 mmHg. In multivariable Cox regression, the patients with SBP of <120 and ≥180 mmHg showed 1.10- and 1.12-times increased risk of all-cause mortality compared to SBP of 120-140 mmHg. Meanwhile, DBP showed no significant association. In subgroup analysis, patients aged <70 years and without diabetes had a U-shaped SBP-mortality association. Cardiovascular mortality was increased in SBP of ≥160 mmHg compared to 120-140 mmHg, but it was not in <120 mmHg. Pooled analysis with previous studies mostly showed elevated risk in SBP of <120 mmHg, but the risks in 140-160 and 160-180 mmHg were not consistent. Conclusion: Extremely lowering BP (<120 mmHg) or uncontrolled hypertension (≥160 mmHg) should be avoided to optimize survival in Korean hemodialysis patients. Detailed analysis for patients with SBP of 120-160 mmHg should be studied further under uniform BP measurement, along with consideration of risk of intradialytic hypotension. Tailored recommendations regarding patient risk factors also should be considered.

Background: The prognosis of end-of-life patients is challenging, and clinicians have attempted to predict survival more accurately. High serum creatinine (sCr) levels are associated with lower survival rates in patients with various cancers; however, low sCr levels are commonly expected in patients with terminal cancer because of muscle wasting and malnutrition. Therefore, we investigated the prevalence of low and high sCr levels and their association with survival duration in patients with terminal cancer in a palliative care unit. Methods: We analyzed the medical records of 280 patients admitted to a palliative care unit. Patients were divided into low (<0.5 mg/dL), normal (0.5-1.2 mg/dL), and high (>1.2 mg/dL) sCr groups. Kaplan-Meier survival curves using sCr levels were plotted and compared using the log-rank test. Using stepwise selection, a multivariable Cox proportional hazards model was used to identify the significant prognostic factors. Results: The median survival durations in the high-, low-, and normal-sCr groups were 9.57 days, 22.26 days, and 27.51 days, respectively. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard model identified that males (hazard ratio [HR], 1.81; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.16-2.85), poor performance status (HR, 3.43; 95% CI, 1.12-10.54), total parenteral nutrition use (HR, 1.84; 95% CI, 1.09-3.1), high sCr (HR, 2.74; 95% CI, 1.52-4.94), and low sCr (HR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.07-1.43) were significantly associated with a shorter survival time. Conclusion: Low and high serum creatinine levels were significantly associated with poor survival in patients with cancer at the end-of-life stage. Therefore, readily available and simple biomarkers may help plan advanced care in palliative care settings.

In the current transition to intensified upstream processing, the risks of adopting traditional single-use systems for high-titer, long-duration perfusion cultures, have thus far not been considered. This case study uses the Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA) method to evaluate the risks associated with implementing upstream single-use technology. The simulated model process was used to compare the risk level of single-use technology for a traditional fed-batch cell culture with that for perfusion culture, under the same annual protein production conditions. To provide a reasonable source of potential risk for FMEA, all single-use upstream operations for both fed-batch and perfusion processes were investigated using an analytical method developed to quantify the impact of process parameters and operating conditions on single-use system specifications and to ensure objectivity. Many of the risks and their levels, were similar in long-duration perfusion cultures and fed-batch cultures. However, differences were observed for high-risk components such as daily sampling and installation. The result of this analysis indicates that the reasons for risk are different for fed-batch cultures and perfusion cultures such as larger bioreactors in fed-batch and longer runs in perfusion, respectively. This risk assessment method could identify additional control measures and be part of a holistic contamination control strategy and help visualize their effectiveness.

RESUMO

The growing demand for soft intelligent systems, which have the potential to be used in a variety of fields such as wearable technology and human-robot interaction systems, has spurred the development of advanced soft transducers. Among soft systems, sensor-actuator hybrid systems are considered the most promising due to their effective and efficient performance, resulting from the synergistic and complementary interaction between their sensor and actuator components. Recent research on integrated sensor and actuator systems has resulted in a range of conceptual and practical soft systems. This review article provides a comprehensive analysis of recent advances in sensor and actuator integrated systems, which are grouped into three categories based on their primary functions: i) actuator-assisted sensors for intelligent detection, ii) sensor-assisted actuators for intelligent movement, and iii) sensor-actuator interactive devices for a hybrid of intelligent detection and movement. In addition, several bottlenecks in current studies are discussed, and prospective outlooks, including potential applications, are presented. This categorization and analysis will pave the way for the advancement and commercialization of sensor and actuator-integrated systems.

OBJECTIVE: Diabetes mellitus (DM) and sarcopenia (SP) are growing public health concerns in an aging society, which share common pathophysiological mechanisms and are associated with serious health consequences. We investigated the impact of DM and SP on all-cause and cardiovascular mortalities in a longitudinal nationwide population-based study. METHODS: The study analyzed data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2008 and 2011, including information on appendicular skeletal muscle mass data. Mortality data up to December 2020 were retrieved from the National Death Registry. RESULTS: Among the 17,920 participants, 14,737 (82.2 %) had neither DM nor SP (DM-/SP-), 1349 (7.5 %) had only DM (DM+/SP-), 1425 (8.0 %) had only SP (DM-/SP+), and 409 (2.3 %) had both DM and SP (DM+/SP+). Compared to the DM-/SP- group, the DM-/SP+ and DM+/SP+ groups demonstrated increased all-cause mortality with adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of 1.47 (95 % confidence interval [CI]: 1.14-1.89) and 1.85 (95 % CI: 1.28-2.69), respectively, while the DM+/SP- group did not (HR 1.29, 95 % CI: 0.97-1.74). The DM+/SP+ group demonstrated the highest risk of overall mortality (p-for-trend <0.001). Compared to the DM-/SP- group, only the DM+/SP+ group demonstrated increased cardiovascular mortality with HRs of 2.10 (95 % CI: 1.11-4.00) while the DM+/SP- (HR 1.35, 95 % CI: 0.79-2.30) and DM-/SP+ (HR 1.42, 95 % CI: 0.84-2.43) groups did not. CONCLUSIONS: The coexistence of DM and SP additively increased the risk of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality. Individuals with either disease may require more careful management to prevent the development of the other disease to reduce mortality.

OBJECTIVE: Counterclockwise rotation of mandible can cause condylar resorption and condylar displacement posteroinferiorly after maxillary orthognathic surgery with mandibular in patients with high-angle mandibular retrognathism. This study was aimed to evaluate long-term stability >2 years and postoperative changes of condylar displacement. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In 15 patients who underwent Le Fort I osteotomy with mandibular autorotation, postoperative stability was cephalometrically investigated until 2 years. Condylar changes were analyzed with transcranial temporomandibular joint projection. Correlation between condylar displacement and surgical movement was analyzed. RESULTS: Significant clockwise relapse of mandible ( P <0.01 for SNB reduction and backward movement of point B) was observed between 6 months and >2 years after surgery, even though the values were small (0.5±0.1 degrees and 1.14±0.13 mm, respectively). The condyle was displaced posteroinferiorly immediately after surgery; however, it achieved a stable position at postoperative 6 weeks. The amount of vertical condylar displacement was significantly correlated with surgical change in mandibular posterior border sagittal angle, palatal plane angle, facial height ratio, and point B in the horizontal dimension. Greater mandibular rotation prompted more vertical condylar displacement. CONCLUSIONS: Small mandibular relapse in long term should be considered after maxillary orthognathic surgery with mandibular autorotation, although it is regarded as a surgical maneuver to minimize mandibular instability in patients susceptible to postoperative condylar resorption.

African swine fever virus (ASFV), an extremely contagious virus with high mortality rates, causes severe hemorrhagic viral disease in both domestic and wild pigs. Fortunately, ASFV cannot be transmitted from pigs to humans. However, ongoing ASFV outbreaks could have severe economic consequences for global food security. Although ASFV was discovered several years ago, no vaccines or treatments are commercially available yet; therefore, the identification of new anti-ASFV drugs is urgently warranted. Using molecular docking and machine learning, we have previously identified pentagastrin, cangrelor, and fostamatinib as potential antiviral drugs against ASFV. Here, using machine learning combined with docking simulations, we identified natural products with a high affinity for AsfvPolX proteins. We selected five natural products (NPs) that are located close in chemical space to the six known natural flavonoids that possess anti-ASFV activity. Polygalic acid markedly reduced AsfvPolX polymerase activity in a dose-dependent manner. We propose an efficient protocol for identifying NPs as potential antiviral drugs by identifying chemical spaces containing high-affinity binders against ASFV in NP databases.
