RESUMO

We aimed to determine the seasonal trends in internet searches for plantar fasciitis and related symptoms in various countries using search engine query data on Google. We used Google Trends to obtain internet search query data from January 2009 to December 2019. We collected monthly search volumes for the query terms "plantar fasciitis" and "heel pain" in the USA, Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Statistical analysis of the seasonal effects on plantar fasciitis was performed using a cosinor model. The cosinor analyses confirmed statistically significant seasonal patterns in the relative search volumes for the terms "plantar fasciitis" and "heel pain" in the USA, Canada, the U.K., Ireland, and Australia, with peaks during the summer and troughs during the winter. For New Zealand, the seasonal trend was statistically significant only for the term "plantar fasciitis", while a similar trend for the term "heel pain" was present without achieving statistical significance for seasonality. This seasonality is thought to be related to more frequent occurrence of plantar fasciitis due to increased physical activity of people during the warmer months. In this study, the search query data using the terms "plantar fasciitis" and "heel pain" on Google Trends show significant seasonal variation across several countries, with a peak in the summer and a trough in the winter.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (L-PRF) has been suggested to enhance bone healing and the effects of L-PRF need to be evaluated in lateral residual alveolar bone augmentation. This in vivo study aimed to analyze the effects of L-PRF as a membrane on bone regeneration in lateral residual alveolar augmentation. METHODS: Eight mongrel dogs were used; the mandibular premolars were extracted and then three lateral ridge defects were surgically created on each side of the arch. After 4 weeks, guided bone ridge augmentation was performed in each defect with the following treatment groups: N+D (nonresorbable membrane with deproteinized bovine bone mineral [DBBM]), N+B (nonresorbable membrane with ß-tricalcium phosphate [ß-TCP]), R+D (resorbable membrane with DBBM), R+B (resorbable membrane with ß-TCP), and P+D (L-PRF with DBBM), and P+B (L-PRF and ß-TCP). Following 4 weeks of bone healing, the new bone amount for each group was measured by light microscopy (primary outcome) and microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) (secondary outcome). The mean values were compared at the 0.05 significance level. RESULTS: The P+D group showed the most newly formed bone in histology and in micro-CT analyses. L-PRF was more effective in bone regeneration when compared to nonresorbable and resorbable barrier membranes. Additionally, this study indicated DBBM was the more favorable osseous graft material for bone regeneration than ß-TCP when barrier membranes are used. CONCLUSION: From the results of this in vivo study using surgically created defects, L-PRF plays an effective role as a barrier membrane for lateral ridge augmentation. L-PRF may be an excellent barrier membrane in place of other nonresorbable and resorbable membranes.

RESUMO

This study investigated the influences of acidity, ethanol, and pigment on the optical properties, microhardness, and surface roughness (Ra) of a nanohybrid dental composite resin. A total of 108 disc-shaped specimens were fabricated using a nanohybrid dental composite and allocated into 36 different storage solutions according to the levels of pH (2.0, 3.0, 4.0, and 5.5), ethanol (0%, 20%, and 40%), and anthocyanin pigment (0%, 2.5%, and 12.5%). Measurements of the colorimetric parameter and the amount of color change (ΔE), translucency parameter (TP), microhardness, and surface roughness (Ra) were performed at 24 h (baseline), 1-, 2-, 3-, and 4-weeks. Repeated measures of analysis of variance (ANOVA) with a Tukey honestly significant difference test and Pearson correlation analysis were carried out (α = 0.05). Pigment of 12.5% or 40% ethanol significantly increased the ΔE (P < 0.001, P = 0.048, respectively). Pigment of 2.5% or 12.5% significantly decreased the TP (P = 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). Microhardness of composite resin stored in pH 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 solution was lower than that for pH 5.5 (P < 0.001). Pigment, ethanol, and pH did not influence the Ra. TP change and ΔE, and Ra and ΔE had a significant positive correlation (P < 0.05). In conclusion, pigment and ethanol levels influenced the optical properties and acidity affected the microhardness of composite resin.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study was to evaluate the effect of bone graft procedure on the primary stability of implants installed in fresh sockets and assess the vertical alteration of peri-implant bone radiographically. METHODS: Twenty-three implants were inserted in 18 patients immediately after tooth extraction. The horizontal gap between the implant and bony walls of the extraction socket was grafted with xenografts. The implant stability before and after graft procedure was measured by Osstell Mentor as implant stability quotient before bone graft (ISQ bbg) and implant stability quotient after bone graft (ISQ abg). Peri-apical radiographs were taken to measure peri-implant bone change immediately after implant surgery and 12 months after implant placement. Data were analyzed by independent t test; the relationships between stability parameters (insertion torque value (ITV), ISQ abg, and ISQ bbg) and peri-implant bone changes were analyzed according to Pearson correlation coefficients. RESULTS: The increase of ISQ in low primary stability group (LPSG) was 6.87 ± 3.62, which was significantly higher than the increase in high primary stability group (HPSG). A significant correlation between ITV and ISQ bbg (R = 0.606, P = 0.002) was found; however, age and peri-implant bone change were not found significantly related to implant stability parameters. It was presented that there were no significant peri-implant bone changes at 1 year after bone graft surgery. CONCLUSIONS: Bone graft procedure is beneficial for increasing the primary stability of immediately placed implants, especially when the ISQ of implants is below 65 and that bone grafts have some effects on peri-implant bone maintenance.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to compare the osteogenic effects of demineralized dentin matrix (DDM) combined with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in rabbit calvarial defects with DDM and anorganic bovine bone (ABB) combined with rhBMP-2. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four round defects with 8-mm diameters were created in each rabbit calvaria. Each defect was treated with one of the following: 1) DDM, 2) ABB/rhBMP-2, or 3) DDM/rhBMP-2. The rhBMP-2 was combined with DDM and ABB according to a stepwise dry and dip lyophilizing protocol. Histological and microcomputed tomography (µCT) analyses were performed to measure the amount of bone formation and bone volume after 2- and 8-week healing intervals. RESULTS: Upon histological observation at two weeks, the DDM and ABB/rhBMP-2 groups showed osteoconductive bone formation, while the DDM/rhBMP-2 group showed osteoconductive and osteoinductive bone formation. New bone formation was higher in DDM/rhBMP-2, DDM and ABB decreasing order. The amounts of bone formation were very similar at two weeks; however, at eight weeks, the DDM/rhBMP-2 group showed a two-fold greater amount of bone formation compared to the DDM and ABB/rhBMP-2 groups. The µCT analysis showed markedly increased bone volume in the DDM/rhBMP-2 group at eight weeks compared with that of the DDM group. Notably, there was a slight decrease in bone volume in the ABB/rhBMP-2 group at eight weeks. There were no significant differences among the DDM, ABB/rhBMP-2, and DDM/rhBMP-2 groups at two or eight weeks. CONCLUSION: Within the limitations of this study, DDM appears to be a suitable carrier for rhBMP-2 in orthotopic sites.
