The paper deals with ultrasound effects examined in experiments on 68 male Wistar rats with experimental pneumonia and on animals with pneumonia injected with plasma from rats pre exposed to ultrasound. Ultrasound is shown to inhibit pulmonary inflammation and lipid peroxidation. The role of humoral factors in preventive mechanism of ultrasound action is elucidated.

Use of the new laboratory diagnostic methods for examining 1352 chronic bronchitis patients made it possible to establish specific features and changes that resulted from a sanatorium-spa treatment of tissue inflammatory reactions, their intensity, the degree of manifestation in the bronchovascular and alveolar-vascular pulmonary barriers, the state of resistance to recurrences, the interconnection between bronchus obstruction and inflammatory and allergic processes, and adreno- and cholinopathy. A mutual connection was found to exist between the above characteristics of chronic bronchitis.

[Fluctuating currents in the combined therapy of inflammatory lung diseases]. / Fliuktuiruiushchie toki v kompleksnoi terapii pri vospalitel'nykh zabolevaniiakh legkikh.

An experimental and clinical trial was performed to evaluate effectiveness of fluctuating currents in the treatment of pulmonary inflammation. A positive effect was registered in the currents use to manage chronic bronchitis. The optimal regimen has been developed.

The course of bronchitis with clinical manifestations of allergy is characterized by certain cytochemical features which (as compared with bronchitis without allergy) show an increase of deoxyribonucleic acid, increased permeability of the intracellular membranes of polynuclear leucocytes and lymphocytes, reduction of the content of cationic proteins and activity of acid phosphatase in the polynuclear leucocytes of the blood.

The authors emphasize informative inadequacy of traditional laboratory diagnosis and anti-inflammatory efficacy of treatment of chronic bronchitis. It is proposed to use a new method (Sigma-ESR) reflecting the activity and specificity of tissue processes in the lungs during inflammation that substantiates objectification of diagnosis. The technique is described.

In vitro exposure of the blood to UV irradiation and ultrasound changes the content of cationic proteins in polynuclear leukocytes. The difference (vs. the intact blood) is diagnostically valuable, for it helps locate the inflammation in the lungs, determine the origin of the bronchial spasm, and predict resistance to relapses of pulmonary inflammations.

Specific (tuberculin, adrenalin) and nonspecific (ultrasound, phenol) in vitro exposures of the blood improve the diagnostic informativeness of the red cell sedimentation rate measurements. Similarity of the results of measurements, carried out by the suggested and the reference techniques in more than 550 patients, gives grounds to employ the suggested modifications of tuberculin diagnosis, of detecting a beta-adrenodependent bronchospasm, of assessing the pattern and the activity of an inflammation in pneumonias. Practical and statistical rationale for the suggested methods is given.

Three approaches to optimal control of inflammatory diseases of the lungs are described. The first approach includes improvement of the diagnostic procedure. Lung inflammation in Wistar rats was induced by transthoracic inoculation of live and inactivated cultures of Staphylococcus aureus P209. In the former case the rats received phitohemagglutinin and cyclophosphane. A specific nature of inflammatory processes in these conditions was confirmed by histological, histo-cytochemical and bacterioscopic indexes; humoral and cellular immune responses being similar. The data show no direct correlation between inflammatory and immune reactions.

[Histochemical characteristics of the neural apparatus of the bronchi in different states of tonus]. / Gistokhimicheskie osobennosti nervnogo apparata bronkhov pri razlichnom sostoianii ikh tonusa.

Composite histoenzymochemical characteristics of the nervous apparatus of bronchi in vagotomy, desympathetization, histamine shock, and development of pneumonia experimentally and clinically were obtained. The development of bronchospasm under the above effects and in pneumonia was found to be accompanied by decreases in the activity of acetylcholinesterase, the content of noradrenaline, a high content of nucleoproteins, polysaccharides, a high activity of oxidoreductases in different structures of the nervous apparatus of the bronchi. Bronchodilatation was accompanied by a decrease of all the above-mentioned indicators of the status of the nervous apparatus as well as destructive changes in its elements. The condition of production and utilization of the cholinergic and adrenergic mediators is discussed on the basis of the data obtained.
