RESUMO
The study included 174 patients with osteoarthrosis (OA) of the first and second x-ray stage, subclinical or mild reactive synovitis. The patients received sanatorium treatment including hydrogen sulphide balneotherapy, galvanopeloid therapy with sulphide muds of Imeretinsk deposit (Sochi) by the segmental-local technique, prior magnetic laser radiation in some cases. Anesthetic, anti-inflammatory effects were found which proved highest in consecutive use of magnetolaser radiation and galvanopeloid therapy as shown by normalization of autonomic function, improvement of peripheral circulation, inhibition of proteolysis due to antioxidant and adaptogenic actions.

A randomized trial of 77 patients with polyosteoarthrosis of stage I-II was made in two groups which received hydrogen sulfide balneotherapy according to conventional regimen (controls) and inhalations of hydrogen sulfide water. Ultrasonic hydrogen sulfide inhalations are not inferior in efficacy to conventional treatment, but balneoreaction occurred less frequently. High bioavailability of hydrogen sulfide in inhalations provides antiinflammatory, analgetic, trophic effects, stimulates general and immune reactivity of the body.

In vitro experiments demonstrate stability of ascorbic acid pH solution and a 1.5-fold increase in ascorbic acid mass-transfer through semipermeable membranes in exposure to laser radiation and magnetic field generated by the device Uzor. Bioavailability of ascorbic acid was proved by adaptogenic and antioxidant effects of laser-magnetophoresis of 2% ascorbic acid solution applied to the affected joints in 79 patients with osteochondrosis. The above laser-magnetophoresis compared to reflex-segmental technique of laser-magnetotherapy is more effective and safe as to balneopathological reactions.

Joint degeneration and dystrophy observed in some subjects exposed to low-dose radiation after the Chernobyl accident is accompanied with more active production of lipid peroxidation products. This overproduction is corrected by combined sulfurated hydrogen balneotherapy and magnetophoresis of vitamin E on the affected joints.

It is suggested that a rise in plasma level of LPO products may be involved in osteoarthrosis pathogenesis. A direct correlation exists between elevated levels of diene conjugates, compensatory activity of antioxidant system and osteoarthritis form, history and season of the year. The highest LPO activity was observed in multiple articular lesions versus mono-osteoarthrosis. Compensatory potential of antioxidant system exhausted with the disease duration and is minimal in spring. The disease responded best to sulfurated hydrogen baths combined with laser treatment of the affected joints.
