RESUMO

Background. Dermatopathic lymphadenopathy is a well-defined histopathological entity with an underestimated prevalence in the general population. Objective. The present study was conducted to analyze the characteristics of histologically diagnosed cases of dermatopathic lymphadenopathy at our unit. We also aimed to investigate any association between the clinical features of the patients and the histological findings. Methods. A total of 39 lymph node samples from 39 patients diagnosed with dermatopathic lymphadenopathy were included in this prospective cohort study. Results. Thirty-four (87%) patients had a dermatological disorder. The presence of paracortical eosinophils were significantly higher in patients with dermatological disorders (P = .001), while the presence of dilated sinuses was significantly more common in patients without a dermatological disorder (P = .035). The presence of dilated sinuses and medullary histiocytes were significantly more common in patients with lower body surface area involvement of the disease compared to the ones with a higher body surface area (P = .003, P = .034; respectively). Conclusion. Most of the patients included in the study had one of a broad spectrum of undiagnosed dermatological disorders. The clinical significance of the relation between histological and clinical findings in dermatopathic lymphadenopathy remains to be explained. Dermatopathic lymphadenopathy should always be considered in differential diagnoses of patients with persistent lymph node enlargement even when absolute dermatological disorders are not present. Since various skin disorders may be the cause of lymphadenopathy, performing a full-body examination before lymph node excision might prevent unneccessary procedures.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Castleman's disease is an extremely rare disease in the abdomen region characterized by benign lymphoepithelial proliferation. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a case of a 63-year-old female who presented with abdominal pain. Abdominal CT Angio and dynamic contrast-enhanced abdominal MRI revealed a mass lesion showing markedly contrast enhancement, no vascular invasion sign, and diffusion restriction lesion in the truncus coelicus bifurcation region. The mass was surgically resected completely. Pathological evaluation showed a hyaline-vascular type of Castleman's disease. CONCLUSION: Castleman's disease should be kept in mind in the differential diagnosis of an isolated intra-abdominal mass.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to investigate whether N-acetylcysteine (NAC) is effective in the treatment murine model of acute rhinosinusitis in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twelve rats were included in the study. The left nasal cavity of all rats was infected with Streptococcus pneumoniae. Group 1 was the group in which NAC was administered into the left nasal cavity twice daily. Group 2 was selected as the control group. All rats were then sterilely sacrificed under anesthesia after intracardiac blood sampling. After sacrifice, sterile culture samples were collected from the posterior nasal cavity. RESULTS: Total oxidant status and oxidative stress index (OSI), interleukin 1ß, interleukin 6, and tumor necrosis factor α levels decreased significantly in the treatment group. Total antioxidant status was significantly increased. There was a statistically significant increase in total serum thiol levels and native thiol levels. Histopathologic evaluation showed a statistically significant decrease in submucosal gland hypertrophy in the treatment group. CONCLUSION: According to our study, intranasal application of NAC can decrease the inflammatory findings in murine acute rhinosinusitis.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Diced cartilage grafts are used for correcting nasal dorsal deformities and irregularities. However, cartilage resorption is among most common problems after rhinoplasty. The purpose of this experimental study was to investigate the effects of esterified hyaluronic acid, adipose tissue, and blood glue on the viability of diced cartilage grafts. METHODS: A total of 24 Wistar albino rats were used for the study. Cartilage grafts were obtained from 1 side ear and diced. The rats were divided into 4 groups (6 in each group): bare diced cartilage (group 1), diced cartilage wrapped with adipose tissue (group 2), diced cartilage blended with blood glue (group 3), and diced cartilage wrapped with esterified hyaluronic acid (group 4). The grafts were inserted into the subcutaneous pockets of the back of same rat. After 2 months follow-up specimens were harvested for histopathological and dimensional examination. The sections were stained with Hematoxylin and Eosin, Masson-Trichrome, and Elastic Van-Gieson. Chronic inflammation, loss of chondrocyte nucleus, vascularization, foreign body reaction, collagen content of matrix, and extent of elastic fiber were assessed under light microscopy. RESULTS: Foreign body reaction in adipose tissue and blood group was significantly higher than bare cartilage and esterified hyaluronic acid group ( P = 0.001). With respect to loss of chondrocyte nucleus esterified hyaluronic acid group had significant higher rate of nucleus loss than other groups ( P = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that blood glue, esterified hyaluronic acid and autologous adipose tissue have not beneficial effects in improving viability of diced cartilage grafts.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The significance of hilar soft tissue invasion of rete testis in malign germ cell tumors is still controversial on current guidelines. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the importance of hilar soft tissue involvement in germ cell tumors and evaluated the possibility of a risk factor such as rete testis. METHOD: Totally, 59 radical orchiectomy specimens operated between 2007 and 2015 at our clinics. All records were retrospectively researched. Patients' age, level of tumor markers, tumor size, histological subtype, clinical stage, presence or absence of carcinoma in situ, vascular/lymphatic and/or hilar soft tissue invasion, tumoral necrosis, number, site and diameter of metastasis, type of further treatment (radiotherapy or chemotheraphy) and follow-up period were recorded and evaluated for all patients. RESULTS: Twenty-six of totally 59 malign germ cell tumors were seminomatous and 33 were nonseminomatous (NS). Mean patients age was 38.54 years (range 17-89 years). Mean follow-up duration was 39.84 months (range 3-96). Serum tumor marker levels were found associated with rete testis invasion (p = 0.035). Hilar soft tissue invasion was significantly associated with vascular invasion (p = 0.001). As it was expected, vascular invasion was significantly associated with metastasis (p = 0.024). CONCLUSIONS: We concluded that there is a strong association between hilar soft tissue invasion and vascular invasion. Especially in NS germ cell tumors, hilar soft tissue involvement a risk factor for prognosis and to determine the need for additional treatment. According to our study, hilar soft tissue status should be reported on routine pathology report.
