RESUMO

We used optical coherence tomography to examine the effect of a coating material containing surface reaction-type pre-reacted glass-ionomer (S-PRG) filler on primary enamel demineralization in 18 extracted human primary teeth. The pulp was removed, and each tooth was ultrasonically cleaned with distilled water. Six teeth were treated with 0.1-M lactic acid buffer solution (De group). In the second group (n = 6), a thin film of coating material was applied before demineralization (PRG group). A third group (Control group; n = 6) was maintained in artificial saliva. Using optical coherence tomography, we measured peak signal intensity (dB) and width at 1/e2 (µm) at predetermined locations on the enamel surface and calculated integrated values. All data were analyzed with ANOVA and the Tukey-Kramer test (α = 0.05). Although changes in integrated values differed between groups, there was a small but significant increase in the Control group and a small but significant decrease in the De group. In the PRG group, integrated values were significantly higher at 7 days after the start of the experiment and significantly increased thereafter. Our findings indicate that a coating material containing S-PRG fillers may prevent primary enamel demineralization.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of PRG filler extraction solution on the demineralization of enamel using optical coherence tomography (OCT). Bovine enamel was treated with lactic acid buffer solution and then placed in artificial saliva (De group). In the second group, specimens were stored in PRG filler extraction solution followed by immersion in lactic acid buffer solution (PRG group). In the control group, specimens were simply stored in artificial saliva. From the OCT image, the peak intensity (dB) and width at (1/e(2)) were obtained, and the integrated value was calculated. The data were analyzed using Tukey-Kramer tests (α=0.05). There was a slight but significant increase in the integrated value observed for the control group, and a slight but significant decrease in the value observed for the De group. For the PRG group, integrated values were doubled after seven days from the start of the experiment.

OBJECTIVES: The surface free energy and dentine bond strength of self-adhesive cements were examined after the removal of temporary cements. METHODS: The labial dentine surfaces of bovine mandibular incisors were wet ground with #600-grit SiC paper. Acrylic resin blocks were luted to the prepared dentine surfaces using HY Bond Temporary Cement Hard (HY), IP Temp Cement (IP), Fuji TEMP (FT) or Freegenol Temporary Cement (TC), and stored for 1 week. After removal of the temporary cements with an ultrasonic tip, the contact angle values of five specimens per test group were determined for the three test liquids, and the surface-energy parameters of the dentine surfaces were calculated. The dentine bond strengths of the self-adhesive cements were measured after removal of the temporary cements in a shear mode at a crosshead speed of 1.0mm/min. The data were subjected to one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) followed by Tukey's HSD test. RESULTS: For all surfaces, the value of the estimated surface tension component γ(S)(d) (dispersion) was relatively constant at 41.7-43.3 mJm(-2). After removal of the temporary cements, the value of the γ(S)(h) (hydrogen-bonding) component decreased, particularly with FT and TC. The dentine bond strength of the self-adhesive cements was significantly higher for those without temporary cement contamination (8.2-10.6 MPa) than for those with temporary cement contamination (4.3-7.1 MPa). CONCLUSIONS: The γ(S) values decreased due to the decrease of γ(S)(h) values for the temporary cement-contaminated dentine. Contamination with temporary cements led to lower dentine bond strength. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The presence of temporary cement interferes with the bonding performance of self-adhesive cements to dentine. Care should be taken in the methods of removal of temporary cement when using self-adhesive cements.

We compared the surface free-energies and dentin bond strengths of single-step self-etch adhesives with and without an oxygen-inhibited layer. The labial dentin surfaces of bovine mandibular incisors were wet ground with #600-grit silicon carbide paper. The adhesives were applied to the ground dentin, light-irradiated, and the oxygen-inhibited layer was either retained or removed with ethanol. The surface free-energies were determined by measuring the contact angles of three test liquids placed on the cured adhesives. The dentin bond strengths of specimens with and without the oxygen-inhibited layer were measured. For all surfaces, the value of the estimated surface tension component was relatively constant at 35.5-39.8 mJ m(-2) . The value of the , Lewis acid component increased slightly when the oxygen-inhibited layer was removed, whereas that of the , Lewis base component decreased significantly. The bond strengths of the self-etch adhesives were significantly lower in specimens without an oxygen-inhibited layer (13.2-13.6 MPa) than in those with an oxygen-inhibited layer (17.5-18.4 MPa). These results indicate that the presence of an oxygen-inhibited layer in single-step self-etch adhesives with advanced photoinitiators promotes higher dentin bond strength.
