RESUMO

Recent evidence has suggested that clades of dioecious angiosperms have fewer extant species on average than those of cosexual (hermaphroditic and monoecious) relatives. Reasons for the decrease in speciation rates and/or increase in extinction rates are only beginning to be investigated. One possibility is that dioecious species suffer a competitive disadvantage with cosexuals because only half of the individuals in a dioecious population are seed bearing. When only females produce seed, offspring will be more spatially clumped and will experience more local resource competition than when every individual produces seed. We examine two spatially explicit models to determine the effect of a reduction in seed dispersers on the invasibility and persistence of dioecious populations. Even though dioecious females were allowed to produce twice as many seeds as cosexuals, our results show that a reduction in the number of seed dispersers causes a decrease in the ability of dioecious progeny to find uninhabited sites, thus reducing persistence times. These results suggest that the maintenance of dioecy in the presence of hermaphroditic competitors requires a substantial increase in relative fitness and/or a large dispersal advantage of dioecious seeds.

RESUMO

By using two different reaction pathways, we generated enzymatically three sialylated and site-specifically alpha 1-3-fucosylated polylactosamines. Two of these are isomeric hexasaccharides Neu5Ac(alpha 2-3)Gal(beta 1-4)GlcNAc(beta 1-3)Gal(beta 1-4)[Fuc(alpha 1-3)] GlcNAc and Neu5Ac(alpha 2-3)Gal(beta 1-4)[Fuc(alpha 1-3)]GlcNAc(beta 1-3)Gal(beta 1-4) GlcNAc, containing epitopes that correspond to VIM-2 and sialyl Lewis (x), respectively. The third one, nonasaccharide Neu5Ac(alpha 2-3)Gal(beta 1-4)GlcNAc(beta 1-3)Gal(beta 1-4)[Fuc(alpha 1-3)] GlcNAc(beta 1-3)Gal(beta 1-4)[Fuc(alpha 1-3)]GlcNAc, is a sialylated and internally difucosylated derivative of a trimeric N-acetyllactosamine. All three oligosaccharides have one fucose-free N-acetyllactosaminyl unit and can be used as acceptors for recombinant alpha 1-3-fucosyltransferases in determining the biosynthesis pathways leading to polyfucosylated selectin ligands.

RESUMO

Collagen and proteoglycans in the intervertebral disc (LI-II) of young beagle dogs (age 55 weeks) were analyzed following a 15 weeks' daily 20 km running training on a treadmill with 15 degree uphill inclination. In nucleus pulposus no statistically significant alterations were found in the content of proteoglycans or collagen. In annulus fibrosus the total tissue wet weight and total amount of collagen (hydroxyproline) increased by 34-36% in the runners as compared to age-matched, untrained controls. Since the total amount of proteoglycans did not increase, the annulus fibrosus became relatively depleted of proteoglycans, as indicated by the 27% reduction in uronic acid concentration, expressed either per wet weight or hydroxyproline. The average molecular size of the remaining nonaggregating proteoglycans was larger, and there was also a trend towards increased proportion of proteoglycans aggregating with hyaluronan. Most of the chondroitin sulfate side chains were 6-sulfated (65-66%). Running did not alter the sulfation or length of the chondroitin sulfate chains. The decreased proteoglycan/collagen ratio in annulus fibrosus may result in altered mechanical properties of the tissue and reflects its adaptation to enhanced motion and stress.
