The study evaluates the impact of Ovopel on the reproductive effectiveness of carp from Polish line 6 and Lithuanian line B and the release of luteinizing hormone (LH) and 17α,20ß-dihydroxyprogesterone (17α,20ß-DHP) in females from these lines during ovulation induction. The levels of both hormones were determined in blood plasma samples taken just before the priming injection of Ovopel (0 h), at the time of administering the resolving dose of Ovopel (12 h), and after the next 12 h (24 h). Following Ovopel treatment, the mean egg weight obtained for line 6 was higher, but not statistically different, than that observed for line B. Egg quality, on the other hand, was significantly higher in line B. Female provenance did not significantly affect the number of eggs and living embryos after 70 h incubation. However, the total egg number for line 6 was higher. The mean number of living embryos (70 h) was similar for both lines. LH concentrations at 0, 12, and 24 h were not statistically different between the lines. A comparison of LH concentrations between ovulated and non-ovulated females at different sampling times revealed no significant differences either within or between the lines. Statistically significant differences in LH levels were found for both ovulated and non-ovulated females from a given line between the sampling times. The results for 17α,20ß-DHP were similar, with only one difference: 24 h after the priming dose of Ovopel, 17α,20ß-DHP levels in ovulated fish were significantly higher compared with non-ovulated females, but only in line 6.

The external carbon source and the installation of periphyton structures were applied in combined intensive-extensive aquaculture to test their efficiency of nutrient utilization to support clean and efficient fish production. Two aquaculture systems were tested, with one additionally treated with methanol as a source of carbohydrates for microbial activity stimulation and an additional area for periphyton installed. Each system was composed of fish tanks with intensively reared sturgeon and one extensive pond stocked with common carp in polyculture. The water from intensive fish production was discharged into the fish pond, to serve as a nutrient source for primary production in the pond. Obtained data revealed that applied manipulations enhanced microorganism development and pond productivity. The results of the research show that applied moderate, nature-based upgrade in aquaculture system may allow for more efficient and cost-effective treatment of wastewater from intensive aquaculture.

We present a model of impurity-induced magnetization of graphene assuming that the main source of graphene magnetization is related to impurity states with a localized spin. The analysis of solutions of the Schrödinger equation for electrons near the Dirac point has been performed using the model of massless fermions. For a single impurity, the solution of Schrödinger's equation is a linear combination of Bessel functions. We found resonance energy levels of the non-magnetic impurity. The magnetic moment of impurity with a localized spin was accounted for the calculation of graphene magnetization using the Green's function formalism. The spatial distribution of induced magnetization for a single impurity is obtained. The energy of resonance states was also calculated as a function of interaction. This energy is depending on the impurity potential and the coupling constant of interaction.

Hormonal stimulation in common carp is a routine practice to enhance sperm production and control gamete maturation. This study aimed to compare the proteome of carp seminal plasma between control and Ovopel-induced males using two-dimensional differential in-gel electrophoresis. Ovopel induction increased sperm volume, total sperm count, seminal plasma osmolality, and pH and decreased seminal plasma protein concentration. In total, 36 spots were identified (23 up- and 13 downregulated), corresponding to 23 proteins differentially abundant in seminal plasma after Ovopel induction (p < .05; fold change 1.2). The majority of proteins were associated with the immune and stress responses including the transport protein (hephaestin), antiproteases (fetuin, α2-macroglobulin, TIMP2), complement components (C3, complement factor B/C2A), regulator of the coagulation cascade (plasminogen), modulators of the innate immune response, such as intelectin, ApoA and ApoE, and the cathepsin/cystatin system, and stress response (enolase1). In addition, hormonal stimulation seems to be related to the proteins involved in lipid metabolism, signal transduction, and tissue remodeling. Our results suggest that hormonal stimulation is not just concomitant with the hydration of testis but also induces the synthesis and secretion of seminal plasma proteins involved in sperm maturation and protection against stress induced by administration of the exogenous hormone. SIGNIFICANCE: It is well known that hormonal stimulation of male fish induces the final maturation of spermatozoa. However, molecular and biochemical basis underlying hormone-induced changes in semen is unknown at present. This study for the first time reveals, using proteomic approach, that hormonal stimulation in addition to hydration of testis is accompanied by significant changes in seminal plasma proteins related mainly to immune and stress response, lipid metabolism, signal transduction and tissue remodeling. These changes are associated with gene expression and synthesis and secretion of seminal plasma proteins by reproductive tissues. Overall, our results provide a framework for understanding the molecular mechanism responsible for hormonal stimulation in the reproductive tract of fish males.
