RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To describe the surgical technique for extravesicular, two-layer, side-to-side ureteroneocystostomy combined with tension-relieving techniques (ETSUTT) for feline proximal ureteral obstruction and report clinical outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective case series. ANIMALS: Ten privately-owned cats with ureteral obstruction near the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ). METHODS: Medical records were retrospectively reviewed for cats with ureteral obstruction close to the UPJ that underwent ETSUTT (2018-2021). The ETSUTT procedure consisted of a modified extravesicular technique (two-layer, side-to-side ureteroneocystostomy) and tension-relieving techniques (renal descensus, ureterocystopexy, and nephrocystopexy). RESULTS: All cats survived through discharge. In all cats, postoperative blood urea nitrogen and creatinine concentrations were decreased, compared with preoperative concentrations. Perioperative complications included ureteral catheter dislodgement (3), transient pollakiuria (2), and dysuria (1), but no specific treatments were required. Urinary tract infection was observed postoperatively in three of the 10 cats. The median follow-up was 648 days (min-max: 86-1229 days). Seven of the 10 cats were alive without recurrent ureteral obstruction at the end of this retrospective study. CONCLUSION: The ETSUTT procedure was successfully performed without major complications in cats with ureteral obstruction occurring near the UPJ. Use of ETSUTT provided a fair-to-good, long-term prognosis in cats that were otherwise difficult to manage. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This novel procedure, ETSUTT, was feasible, safe, and could be a viable treatment option for feline proximal ureteral obstruction, including the UPJ, especially for obstructions caused by stricture.

RESUMO

A 36-month-old female Pembroke Welsh Corgi with a cardiac murmur weighing 12.6 kg was referred to the Matsubara Animal Hospital cardiology service. Echocardiography revealed a patent ductus arteriosus. The dog underwent ductus arteriosus closure using an Amplatz Canine Duct Occluder. After the operation, we suspected coagulation and a platelet disorder because of the slightly increased haemorrhage during the operation, postoperative purpura around the surgical wound inside of the thigh, and dog breed, which is known to be commonly affected with von Willebrand disease (vWD). Subsequently, type 1 vWD was confirmed. Complete occlusion was achieved 1 month after the operation; however, 2 months after the operation, recanalization appeared. Recanalization progressed gradually; cardiac redilation was not detected 6 years after the operation. The late recanalization was most likely associated with vWD. In canine breeds pre-disposed to developing vWD, pre-operative testing may be indicated prior to patent ductus arteriosus occlusion, though the prevalence of vWD is rare.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Thrombin inhibits cadherin on vascular endothelial cells, rapidly and reversibly increasing endothelial permeability. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of trans-arterial infusion with thrombin. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten rabbits with right thigh tumor were randomly divided into two groups: A thrombin group and a control group. In the thrombin group, a suspension of thrombin (300 IU), cisplatin (3 mg), lipiodol (0.3 ml) and iopamidol (0.3 ml) was infused into the right femoral artery. In the control group, a suspension of cisplatin, lipiodol and iopamidol was infused. Platinum concentrations in plasma were measured five and ten minutes after administration. Platinum concentrations were also measured in tumor specimens excised 30 minutes after infusion. RESULTS: At both five and ten minutes after infusion, platinum concentrations in plasma were significantly lower for the thrombin group than for the control group. Platinum concentration in tumor tissue was significantly higher for the thrombin group than for the control group. CONCLUSION: The present results suggest that transarterial infusion with thrombin may offer a number of pharmacological advantages.

RESUMO

A female Japanese domestic shorthair cat showed gait abnormality at 5 months of age, and head shaking and tremor became apparent from 6 months of age. Serum biochemistry at 13 months of age revealed markedly elevated ALT and ALP. The cat died at 16 months of age. Histopathologic examination revealed prominent cytoplasmic swelling of neurons with accumulation of yellowish pigments. The storage pigments stained positively with periodic acid Schiff reaction, Schmorl method, and Oil red O stain. Ultrastructurally, the neuronal storage consisted of aggregates of dense materials, similar to the granular osmiophilic deposits in infantile ceroid-lipofuscinosis in humans. Hepatocytes were markedly swollen and contained faintly eosinophilic inclusion. To our knowledge this case is the sixth case of feline ceroid-lipofuscinosis, which is characterized by granular osmiophilic dense bodies in the neurons and prominent involvement of hepatocytes.
