[Morphometric characteristics of the cells in non-tumoral processes and tumors of the adrenal glands]. / Morfometricheskie osobennosti kletok pri neopukholevykh protsessakh i opukholiakh nadpochechnikov.

A comparative morphometric study of the cells was carried out by the Integral-2MT television cytologic analyzer, and the DNA quantitative estimation by flow cytofluorometry in 31 patients with adrenal tumors and hyperplastic involvements. The shifts in all the morphometric parameters in cortical adenoma and hyperplasia were found statistically insignificant, with similar (diploid) DNA cytograms. The differences in all the morphometric parameters (except the cellular and nuclear shape) were statistically significant in pheochromocytoma and hyperplasia of the cortex, with the pheochromocytoma DNA histograms showing higher counts of cells with DNA content higher than 2S. Assessment of the total group of malignant tumors of the adrenals (malignant pheochromocytoma, cortical carcinoma) has shown statistically significant differences in the mean characteristics (except cellular and nuclear shape) of these tumors and adrenocortical hyperplasia. In adrenocortical carcinoma 2 of the 3 histograms were aneuploid with a considerable count of cells with DNA content higher than 2S. The objective parameters may be used in the differential cytologic diagnosis of nontumor involvements and tumors of the adrenals.

Integral-2MT is designed for differential diagnosis of tumor-like neoplasms. It also provides for automatized morphological parameter examination of cells which are either deposited on the slides or photographed in the form of a positive or negative picture. The analyser design and its operation principle are described. The analyser structural diagram is based on the modular main principle using the Electronika-60M microcomputer. The analyser software permits to determine 8 morphological cell parameters, to calculate statistical cell population features, to draw automatically histograms in various scales according to the operator's choice. The possible application spheres are described.

[Cytological diagnosis of small cell lung cancer]. / Tsitologicheskaia diagnostika melkokletochnogo raka legkogo.

Morphometric studies using the Integral instrumentation complex and the ICP--II pulsed cytophotometer assays of DNA in lung tumor cells of various histological patterns were conducted to obviate difficulties involved in establishing differential cytologic diagnosis of small cell undifferentiated lung cancer. It was shown that morphometric and pulsed cytophotometric measurements may offer considerable advantage when used in conjunction with other procedures of differential diagnosis with a view to improving diagnosis of various forms of lung tumors and small cell undifferentiated lung cancer, in particular.

[Differential diagnosis of precancerous and cancerous states of the cervix uteri based on the multiparameter analysis of the results of cytological studies]. / Differentsial'naia diagnostika predrakovykh i rakovykh sostoianii sheiki matki na osnovanii mnogoparametricheskogo analiza rezul'tatov tsitologicheskikh issledovanii.

The problems of the early cytological diagnostics of precancerous and cancerous conditions of the uterine cervix are considered. The algorhithm for a differential diagnostic of borderline conditions in the uterine cervix is presented based on the multiparametric statistical analysis of the morphometric data (surface and perimeter of epithelial cell nuclei). Results are obtained on the semiautomatic cytological analyzer "Integral". The possibility of classification of the early dysplastic epithelial changes (simple dysplasia), advanced dysplasia and cancerous processes in the uterine cervix is shown. The diagnostic errors occur in less than 16% of cases.

[Cytometric study of thyroid cancers of different types of histogenesis]. / Tsitometricheskoe issledovanie raka shchitovidnoi zhelezy razlichnogo gistogeneza.

Three forms of struma maligna (A-, B-, and C-cell) are determined histogenetically in the thyroid gland, each of them having its own cytometric parameters. Cytological studies measuring the areas of the cells and nuclei surface allow one to differentiate between malignancies of various histogenesis.

[Quantitative analysis of dyes for automated studies of cell preparations]. / Kolichestvennyi analiz krasitelei dlia avtomatizirovannykh issledovanii kletochnykh preparatov.

Spectral studies were made of the dyes in solutions and also of the cytology preparations stained by these dyes. 14 dyes of the blue-violet spectral region were examined. Absorbtion and transmission coefficients of the cell nucleus and cytoplasm were measured. The data obtained allowed to elaborate a quantitative estimation of dye selection. According to this method cresyl-violet was selected as the dye for Videocon LI-421.
